Former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has already pleaded guilty to misuse of campaign funds, but now he is also in danger of losing his property. Federal prosecutors requested today to seize two homes owned by Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife Sandi.
Jackson Jr. resigned from Congress in November, and prosecutors have recommended that he and his wife serve consecutive jail terms.
Jesse Jackson Jr. is to be sentenced to four years in prison while his wife, Sandi Jackson, will be sentenced to 18 months. She pleaded guilty to underestimating the couple’s income on tax returns. Jackson Jr. has requested that he serve his sentence first since his wife is employed and is able to support their family.
Federal prosecutors filed a motion in U.S. District Court on Friday to seize Jackson’s homes in Chicago and Washington D.C. Prosecutors are also looking to seize Jackson’s retirement account, worth an estimated $80,000.
In addition to jail time, the government is also recommending that Jackson repay $750,000 in restitution to the campaign, and Sandi pay $168,000.
Jackson’s attorneys, however, have expressed to the court that Jackson has no way of paying that fine, especially since he is unable to work due to his health condition.
Prior to Jackson’s resignation, he spent months away from Congress seeking treatment for bipolar disorder.
According to federal prosecutors, Jackson Jr. has already turned over 21 items worth about $21,000.
