Why Did an Ohio School Ban Braids and Afro Puffs?

An Ohio school has banned Afro puffs and twisted braids for girls, according to the blog  Black Girl With Long Hair.

Horizon Science Academy reportedly sent a note home to parents advising them that Afro puffs and ‘small twisted braids’ were no afro puffslonger allowed to be worn by students.

The letter from school administrators, also posted online, notes the following: Afro-puffs and small twisted braids, with our without rubberbands, are NOT permitted.

The letter  from the school says that the dress code helps create a “successful” school environment, although it is unclear how allowing a young girl to wear her hair naturally would be disruptive to any school environment.

Black Girl With Long Hair observed the following:

It’s unclear what the administration means by small twisted braids, but if they are referring to box braids they are banning a protective style that black girls have worn for generations. Afro-puffs are essentially the black version of the ponytail (when pulled back our hair puffs out instead of laying down), and yet the rules do not have a ban on ponytails for students of other ethnicities.

The school has not released a justification for banning the hairstyles.

What do you think? Are Afro puffs and twists ‘radical’?

Injectables, peels, and lasers are used in moat
of these countries. Everest College is considered
to be one of the best-managed beauty schools in Ontario in terms
of its financial structures. Theey are more powerful that regular
    over-the-counter anti-aging treatments, they tendd
to be more irritaating as well and might have side effects like
    skin redness annd flakiness.

Black women love their hair as much as they love their men, their money or anything else. So, one of the worst things that anyone can do is to try to squash the freedom of expression that comes with allowing a woman to decide what hairstyle she’s going to end up “sportin” on any particular day.
But a school in Ohio did just that. Horizon Science Academy caused an uproar on the Internet by sending home a letter effectively banning natural hairstyles, especially small braids and afro puffs.

The fury from the decision by the school led to a huge backlash online, and the school sought to scramble and clean up the mess. After all, natural hair is black hair in it’s natural form. So, telling black girls that they can’t come to school with their hair in its natural form is another way of simply saying that you’re not good enough the way God made you. That’s a no-no.
In the letter, the school showed that it respects the controversy and those who are concerned:
“This information has offended many people and by no means did we have any intention towards any of our students,” the letter said.
The author of the letter remains relatively anonymous, surely to keep the backlash from falling onto any one individual. But the letter goes on to vaguely indicate that the school is taking the matter seriously and that they are going to do something about it. But they don’t exactly mention what they are going to do. But the school did invite the public to submit questions about the dress code, and said that they would be releasing a full version of the updated dress code soon. Hopefully, they will remove the ban on afro puffs, since an afro puff never hurt anybody.

Another form of racism is what I see. They’re telling young ,thriving, black girls that they
Can’t Be themselves in order to be accepted. That they have to look european in order to be accepted. This is suppose to be a learning institution. In order to educate, you have to be educated!
The staff members need to learn how to communicate and interact with ppl that are different from them. That’s called real education and growth! If I had a daughter, Iwould’nt dare send her to that school!

HSA administration needs to conduct ethics and culture diversity training to understand social responsibility. This is unacceptable for those in any position to teach and influence the development of human beings, let along young children.

While I find it disgusting that a school would promote such a racist policy, and that the policy does imply that the black woman’s hair/cultural styles are unacceptable all together. Let’s not pretend that this is not what our women already collectively believe. Let’s not pretend that Black women, these days, don’t risk their health, and even lives to have Caucasian features, including hair, bleached skin etc… The problem is not that the school made some racist rule that enforces what most of us believe anyway. The problem is that we still believe this black inferiority ********. If we didn’t believe it collectively, and had a culture that demanded respect of blackness, even from other black people, then people whouldn’t try this stuff on us, because they’d be scared to.

Shut up, stupid. You’re basically saying that black women want to be white just because they bleach their skin and s**t; some just would prefer to be a little lighter. It’s a lot of work to maintain natural hair and some people just don’t want to deal with it. f**k “Caucasian features”.

The letter is a prime example of “double speak”. It says nothing and I suspect they will do little to nothing. Unfortunately, the children who continue to wear the banned hairstyles may now be subject to ridicule.

    Confused Horizon! Visionless Academy!!
If i had a kid in that school, i will sure withdraw him from this visionless school.
Is the Afro hair the problem of the school? I learnt that this school produce the poorest grades of students every year. Yet they’re doing nothing to improve it. Rather the focus on racism.
Needless of finding who wrote it. The school head should be held responsible for authorizing such a disrespectful letter. Then will the actual writer manifest.

I have 4 daughters ranging from high school to preschool and not one of them has their hair chemically straightened. There is no way in b****y h**l I would allow anyone to dictate to me what I do with their hair, especially if its neat and clean. Why don’t they worry about those little snots that come to school with lice (and y’all know not too many of US can catch that sh**). How the h**l else is a little black girl with natural hair supposed to style it? I’d be at that school with braids, Afros and Afro puffs blowing in the wind. I’m from Ohio and I’m ashamed. Smdh

most little black girls wear their hair natural. chemicals are dangerous on small children. that would be child abuse. these people are sick.

I find this horribly offensive, espespecially as a mother of a biracial daughter(mixed equal black and white, i am white) who has hair sooo kinky and unruly (but soooo beautiful, just takes tonnns of upkeep!!) that stylists even at her age are always suggestesting a relaxer or perm and shes only 6 , and i refuse to let chemicals touch her hair until she is 18 and wants to make that decision on her own. I constantly praise her beautiful curls and have her stand in front of the mirror to look at herself while saying how beautiful her skin and hair is to me, and im vigilant aboit this because her father and his family is not in her life and i need her to be proud of that part of her heritage but there are no actual bonafide examples of real life ppl to look at around her.she is raised by white people only until i find a suitable stepfather to introduce into her life and this bothers me only because i want her to experience *all* of her heritage in ways i will never be able to show her on my own.but her hair? heck no will i ever praise a “caucasian version” of that such as straightening/perming being a more “beautiful” or “easy” alternative than the hard work i do put into making her hair manageable either tthrough braids, 1 1/2 hour sessions of naturALconditioning and brushing to leave in its curly “afro” state without frizz and tangles that must be cut out, etc. It does take tons more work than my straight, caucasian hair. But my stepsister was just as white as me with the curliest kinky hair and had similar upkeep rituals. Do i do this bc im ashMed of being caucasian? some white and black racist individuals have accused me so, but no. Imo absolutely not. But she is already growing up in a completely caucasian environment where even black children these days are hardly reminded of their roots unless in a negative way, and so ANY SINGLE AFROAMERICAN ASPECT OF HER SELF THAT I CAN BRING OUT TO HER IN A POSITIVE LIGHT EVERY SINGLE DAY OF HER LIFE WILLL SIMPLY HELP BUILD HER SELF ESTEEM, AND CERTAINLY GUARD AGAINST WHAT IM SURE WILL COME LATER (AND NOT IN SOME FARAWAY DISTANT FUTURE,SHE IS ALREDY IN SCHOOL) POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT AGAINST THE NEGATIVE BARRAGE OF COMMENTS, HATRED, AND COMMENTARY COMING HER WAY ABOUT THOSE VERY SAME AFROAMERICAN FEATURES FROM BITH SOCIETY AS AN INSTITUTION AND PERSONAL PEOPLE AND SITUATIONS IN HER LIFE I.E PEERS IN SCHOOL. We should all ne guarding our chiodren w positive reinforcements on a daily basis, not always negativity towards “whites” or ‘racist society” (even tho it is), let our kids know how special they are, they will figure out racism on their own unfortunately

When rules like these are passed, it shows the lack of involvement in the majority of the parents in the schools. I try to attend all of my kids’ school functions and parent conferences. But I do stand accused of not attending many PTA meetings or joining PTA. But I do know that “ideas” like this come across the board meetings before they are passed, which mean that we have to be more involved.

Alright, let’s deal what is really going on in America these days. First, let’s agree that racism has been existing since the Bible days but for a different reason. Secondly, let’s agree that in America being BLACK can be an issue for some not all, you can never put “all” in the same box. Thirdly, let’s agree that “White” America as well as “Black” America never thought the leader of this nation would look like you and I people of the “dark” race. And finally, let’s call this what is it is, “Institutionalized Racism.” If any entity were to come right out and say something offensive or derogatory towards the Black Race, then it would be obvious racism, can we agree on that. Now, that we have a “brotha” if you will, in the “White House” and not out mowing the lawn of that house, White America has lost their minds with hatred and continual racism. They know they are slowly losing on every side of the coin therefore what better way to keep the Black Community in “its” place than to use as I said earlier, “Institutionalized Racism.” This exists in the policies, laws and procedures that are write to favor or not favor a certain group in society without crossing the lines of Civil Rights or Gender Rights or Sexual Orientation Rights, or Race, you see they are written so vague that it would be hard for the Black Community to actually say they are being a racist. For example, the AFRO PUFFs are forbidden in this school, however what it did not say is “who” or “what” race, it just say AFRO PUFFs, well we all know most Blacks girl or ladies are the target of that subject however from a legal stand point it does not say anything about race, because “AFRO” is not a race it is a “hairstyle” that can be worn by anyone with kinky or nappy hair even “White” people have kinky or nappy hair at times, but rightly so we know who they were targeting, but you cannot prove in a court of law by their written documents and standards because the words, “race or color” of a person’s skin is not mentioned therefore, it does not apply to just “little Black girls.” Do you now see what I mean about “Institutionalized Racism?” How do you stop it? By challenging policies and procedures and laws while targeting your law makers and leaders. Just getting upset and talking about it with people who cannot help is a waste of effort or no effort at all. So go to the schools or instituions demand to see thir rules and procedures, read them, challenge them, make them change them or at least make them comment on who they are really targeting and then you will have more ground to change it. Remember “Progress without change is nothing and he that cannot change his mind, cannot change anything.” Bernard Shaw.

This is what happens when parents of color are not involved in their child’s school and the laws they are passing.

This rule is designed to make girs of color feel bad about their hair and creates image problems for girls of color.

If I was a parent, I’d send my daughter to school like that…then when the school takes disciplinary action, I’d file a state/non-Federal discrimination lawsuit against them.

Black girls Braids and puffs(ponytails) impedes success? Permed/weaved hair creates a more positive learning environment? Why don’t they just say what they really mean…they don’t want Black people in their school environment or anywhere around them or their children. Damn shame if this ban is allowed to just float through. Soon there will be nothing left to strip away from Black People except their skin. If given the chance that will 100% be next.

NOT!!! To change the topic there is prayers in school .., that’s “Church Sunday Schools “.., Though certain political factions want to lobby that not just their own children worship but the entire public take their cue on command… If the “churches ” could fill their “Sunday Schools ” they wouldn’t have to manipulate & lobby government to install prayer in the “public ” school curriculums… It’s the church job to go out in to the world/community and delivery their message… Not to campaign lobby prayer… But then some of those hypocrites burn churches while children. are praying also…

Instead of complaining in a blog, your voice need to be heard so write to The Board of Education, write the Governor, write the State Representative in Ohio. Contact your Black Leaders, your Black Churches, your Black Businesses, and People in your Community. Ask all of them to take action by writing, speaking and protesting. This group of bigots is attempting to make our Black Children feel inferior.  Natural hair styles such as Braids, Afro,s and Afro Puffs originated in Africa where all men came from because the oldest skeleton remains in the world was a African Male. So if they want to make rules about hair in it’s natural state then the Non Black Child CAN NOT Dye their hair, Mouse their hair, Hair Spray their hair, Gel their hair, Spray in Color in their hair and Braid their hair in any way. These Bigots are not talking about hair in it Natural State, they are talking about Hair Styles. The little Black girl in the article look beautiful, her hair was beautiful, she was clean so what’s the problem. I personally have seen Non Black with, Flat Hair, Limp Hair,  Greasy Hair,  Bed Heads Hair,  Hair full of Dandruff Hair of Head Lice and Hair that Stink like WET DOGS. This is what these Bigots need to be concentrating on. My question is dose our Hair Styles as a Child define our Inteligents or How Professional we will be as an Adult. I will answer HELL NO!  Boycott Now that school.

BUT NOT AFROS:Rogers v. American Airlines, 527 F.Supp. 229 (S.D.N.Y. 1981)The court observed that if the policy prohibited the “Afro” style, it might violate Title VII. Id. at 232. This is because banning a natural hairstyle can be categorized as discrimination based on an immutable characteristic associated with a particular race. However, “[a]n all-braided hairstyle is an ‘easily changed characteristic,’” and, even if socioculturally associated with a particular race or nationality, is not an impermissible basis for distinctions in the application of employment.

It is obvious that this school is focusing on the wrong thing. Instead of educating properly in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Arts, World views, literature, writing, etc., and ensuring that their teachers and administrators are continuously educated on various teaching styles, how to deal with and understand people of various cultures and ethnicities, and working to bring the US education system up from the bottom of the world education rankings, they are HATING on the Godly and innocent beauty of this beautiful African American Princess.
She is rocking a look that so many grown Caucasians, Asians, Germans, etc., are trying to get for themselves and/or for their own daughters. The administrators at that school need to really get it together and direct their own insecurities and jealous disposition with a Professional Counselor, Therapist, or Psychiatrist because that was some crazy mess to stir up.
Like so many little, young, and teenage girls, this one is representing and was originally blessed with everything that females in this and other societies wished they possessed, but have to get surgical work done to obtain – full beautiful lips, naturally beautiful and manageable curly hair hair that can and does serve as work of art, bold beautiful eyes, well proportioned nose, deliciously developing cheekbones, and the naturally AVANT GARDE look of a runway model with confidence exuding from her eyes. SO MUCH HATE GOING ON IN THAT SCHOOL. What did they mean when they stated, “they didn’t think it would be so offensive?” THAT IS RIGHT! YOU DIDN’T THINK!!

Third, only Black folk would be accepting of that advice. Fourth, if I knew the actual contact information of the child(ten), parents and/or school, I would start a petition. This is ridiculous!

You are right indeed. North, South, East or West. You are still in the U.S.A. Racism is learned behavior. It is practiced and exists all over the world. Any where there are human beings you will find racism. Said but true. We should all embrace and love the differences of another.

I was raised in Europe and I am not Caucasian nor Hispanic.

There is only one race people. That is the “human race”. We all will live and die. Learn to teach love and respect for each other.

I think we need to call the school and express our concerns iin a loving way, n addition to preparing/signing a petition asking the school leadership to educate themselves about black hair, make sure they tell the “real” American history, and the “real” history of our culture who has birthed all human beings walking on this planet. I’m not mad at their leadership. In fact, I’m glad they were so comfortable sharing their letter as it truly is a call to love, an invitation to be RE-educated about our culture’s natural beauty. While we’ve come along way, this school’s reaction to natural hair is an indication that we still have a long way to go! I am not surprised as I do recall an HBCU requesting something similar from its students. Thank you for sharing this news.

Bottom line is she looks stupid. You all need to be serious about this lol.

Also, this site looks like a hate group. How do you know a white person decided this? It was more than likely a group. You need to get a life because all of your hate is without merit meaning u have no substance to why you hate. More than likely you hate other races because you hate your own, and you need to get over this insecurity.

I don’t want to be confrontational but maybe YOU are the ignorant one! Just because you don’t like the little girls hair that doesn’t make her stupid looking. Someone might think your appearance is not quite what it should be. This is not something she went out and got. This the natural state of her hair and she (or her parents) have the right not to be forced to alter its state either chemically or by use of heat. WOW, really?!?!?

I better leave this page before I say something else I might regret. I rarely comment on these kinds of topics. I do wear my hair natural. I work within a school system. I also greatly dislike when individuals make sweeping generalizations about a group of people, any people. There is not group ANYWHERE in which EVERYONE espouses the exact same believes and thoughts. So what one member of a group says can not and should not be applied to all!!

The school should be more concerned about the children’s education, and emotional well-being than their hairstyles. Everyone is an individual, and should be able to express their own uniqueness. Not every parent wants to use chemicals in their little girl’s hair, because it can be damaging.
You really need to get a life, and stay off this site if it’s too profound for your little mind.

I chuckle when anything negative said about us is attributed to caucasians. I have actually had MORE problems with black people when it comes to my natural hair … especially 7 or 8 years ago when I first made the switch. Maybe not openly, but there are MANY, MANY “African-Americans” that agree with these sentiments. Furthermore, some are so “addicted” to hair that swings in the wind that even if they do go natural their new addiction becomes the pressing comb and flat iron. Just my two cents not the gospel by any means!!

    • blvdjewel

      June 22, 2013 at 9:13 am

I have to say that I agree with you. I usually wear my hair relaxed. But, I will NEVER forget the reaction I got from a Fortune 500 black co-worker after I had my hair beautifully braided in an up-do for a trip I was taking. She gave a me a look like “Oh G-d” – like I committed some type of on-the-job faux pas. I really didn’t care about what anyone else thought and didn’t ask for opinions either. (Her problem was that she tried so hard to assimilate into the dominant culture and actually thought she wasn’t considered black anymore.) Although I did get some positive comments from other blacks, the interesting part was I got the most compliments from non-blacks on the job. One said, I looked like a princess. Anyway, I find the whole positive/negative reaction to black hair both interesting and disturbing. What others choose do with their hair is their business as far as I am concerne (barring the need for it to be clean and neatly groomed – whatever the style).

You are more right than you know Haile! I actually created a mock IQ test but called it a Racial IQ test or an RIQ test. Because white people see themselves as the moral neutral/and the normative in our society, they keep failing the RIQ test. They have the racial intellect of a 3 rd grader perhaps. The more they think they have nothing to do with racism, the lower score they get. So as we grow in our society, it is being revealed that they have some real blind spots that need a lot of work but there is no real demand for them to work on it so do not look for much change in the future.

Parents Unite! If your daughter attends this school, you must ban together. Retain a good lawyer. Hell get two! When the new school year begins, make sure to style your daughters and/or sons hair in one of the banned styles. All ethnicities can and should participate. Derrick first we must learn who we are. “Black”, “African American” , “Minority” is all “Brands” and “Tags” handed down by these Devils in power. To unearth their power one must learn the language of their Uniform Commercial Codes and United States Codes and the United States Constitution of America of the Republic and Bill of Rights and use this information against them to choke the life out of them.

We must stop answering to the Straw Man and take Power of Attorney over that. We must stop getting marriage certificates and if we have them, adjust the contract so we can stop being Orphans because that is where all marriage certificates go to the DEPARTMENT OF ORPHANS…

We must become a Nation so we can pick up where Malcom left off

We must learn legal lessee. Cop a Blacks Law Dictionary 2nd, 3rd, 4th editions.

RISE UP: “We must stop getting marriage certificates and if we have them, adjust the contract so we can stop being Orphans because that is where all marriage certificates go to the DEPARTMENT OF ORPHANS.”

The 13TH Amendment reads: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except, as a punishment for crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

Most Black people do not realize this amendment was to keep Blacks in an ADOPTIVE/ORPHAN type state, which is another form of slavery!

You are absolutely right about getting a marriage license. It’s the same as getting a dog license; it’s about OWNERSHIP! What happens when a marriage couple gets divorced? They MUST go to court to gain their ‘freedom’!!!

Then, the Black man is normally the person, who has to PAY for the children (if any), that he produced, until they have reached the age of 18. Didn’t we have to PAY for our so-called ‘freedom.’?

The reason why the number 18 was made for us to become adults is because these pale thangs would rape our children from the age of 8 through 18!!! It was legal for them to rape little children, and they were/are the ORIGINAL pedophiles.

We are still ENSLAVED, but don’t know it. Also, the penal/penis (jail/prison) system are still forms of slavery, which is stated in the 13th Amendent…”except as a punishment for CRIME, whereof the party shall have been duly CONVICTED, shall exist within the United States.” WHAT DO THESE PIGS DO WHEN A BLACK MAN COMMITS A CRIME?

He is CON-VICTED and PUNISHED by these racist serpents in these uNUTed snakes of azzholes (usa). The word CON is used because Black men are always CONned to commit to crimes they did not commit!!! That’s why they are labeled CONVICTS, when they are set ‘free’!!!

Why are you even questioning your civil liberties? Parents, Children. Wear your natural locs as you will.Let the school board challenge the courts, they will not win. They are using discrinmatory practices in this UNITED STATES and if you do not stand up to them. You deserve what you get. “STOP LETTING THEM WIN. Dammit!!! Get busy taking names on petitions NOW. Do not wait for someone else to do it…FORM A COALITION…smh.

OMG!! Is there any way we can get in touch with this school. This is horrible. How dare they try and stop our heritage. They should focus on curriculum and not the hair styles. Them little white girls were infatuated by those beautiful little angels and their parents got mad because they can’t do their hair like this. SMH…so sad!

The ELIMINATION of Black pride is going down the drain!

These racist schools don’t teach OURstory, and they are doing all they can to ‘euroPEEanize’ our children!

They are effeminizing our young Black men, and boys, and ‘euroPEEanizing’ our young Black women, and girls. They are ‘pee-ing’ on y’all, and y’all think it’s water!!!

I agree with you. However, I must say that there was a time when we didn’t rely on others to teach our children our history. There came a time when many of us were more concerned with assimilating with society at large that they chose to keep the realities of the past from the next generation. Also, to be clear ALL of the history is not bad. Some benefitted greatly being here. Now it is time for history lessons to begin again at home. Time out for seeing who’s child can be the best MJ on Wii. And, for the record, other cultures aren’t being taught and celebrated in the school system at large either (it should also be noted that there are some of us who try to include info whenever possible) … it’s learned at home through the continuance of ancestral traditions, meals and conversation!! Just one woman’s opinion.

I agree, Ms.Jackson. My daughter is natural ( since 4th grade) and she loves her look. One of her issues is dealing with her own race at school when it comes to her hair. Realizing I need to teach her more of our history as Africans and African Americans, I started at home. She is so amazed by so many things. One day she came home and explained to me how so many of her friends and other girls she know hair is so thin, stringy, and unhealthy ( while going to a beautician). Some have begun to wearing weave. These are 6th graders. It all starts at home. And that is in Academics as well.

Keep putting your words out Derrick, because some of our people are in such disillusion that they need a wake up call.

I think it’s too late because they have been so
CON-DITIONED to please their overseers, they don’t want to hear the Truth! They have been CONned, and will remain mentally enslaved for life!

Yes! I agree I really hate to put race in everything but as far as this goes nothing about this rule is pertaining to students as a whole,to further education it singles out black girls and that doesn’t sit right with me

I think this school system in question is racist if you are going to have a rule enforce the rule on everyone not just on one group of people. Then on top of all of this non since they can’t explain why and how this effects the learning or the environment. Workings of a devil please don’t let this happen. Home schooling is the best answer for black people.

I hope they sue! This beautiful baby should not be told because of her hair there is a problem…..I hope I live long enough to see our own thriving communities that are safe, healthy, and prosperous. Our own schools with all of our intelligent, well educated Afrcian-American teachers, and administrations. We could start suing everybody that continue with these racist acts. Let us stop being angry and get smart on these tactics against our children.
