Dr. Julianne Malveaux is a popular economist, author and commentator who is well-known for making appearances on national network programs such as CNN, BET, PBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, C-SPAN, just to name a few. Born on September 22, 1953, this San Francisco, California native was the 15th president of Bennett College for women, a popular HBCU. Since resigning in 2012 from her post at Bennett, she continues to lecture around the country and servers organizations that promote women and civil rights. She is Smart- Dr. Malveaux entered Boston College at the age of 16, right after the 11th grade. She went on to earn both her B.A. and M.A. degrees in economics in only three years. She has a Ph.D. in economics from MIT and holds honorary degrees from many colleges and universities.
She’s Her Own Boss- Dr. Malveaux is the founder of Last Word Productions Inc., a multimedia production company that promotes the work and products of her brand. Last Word Production is responsible for putting together and overseeing her public speaking appearances, her work as a broadcast and print journalist and her other written works.
She’s a Writing Machine- Dr. Malveaux is the author of three books. They are: s*x, Lies, and Stereotypes: Perspectives of a Mad Economist (1994), Wall Street, Main Street, and the Side Street: A Mad Economist Takes a Stroll (1999), Surviving and Thriving: 365 facts in Black Economic History (2010). She is also the co-author of Unfinished Business: A Democrat and A Republican Take On the 10 Most Important Issues Women Face (2002). In addition to books, her written work has appeared in USA Today, Essence Magazine, Ms, Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, the Charlotte Observer, the San Francisco Examiner, and many more.
She’s Controversial- In an interview on National Public Radio, Dr. Malveaux showed no remorse for the Duke lacrosse players when they were allegedly found innocent of raping an African American female. She called them, “liars” and “hooligans,” and felt that they didn’t deserve an apology.
She is fearless- Dr. Malveaux left her “cushy” job at Bennett College and wasn’t afraid to step out on her own. Since then, she has toured the United States, speaking at over 500 Colleges and Universities on the issues of race, culture, gender and the economy. It’s no wonder why Dr. Cornel West describes her as “the most iconoclastic public intellectual in the country.” She ROCKS!!!
