The Washington Times reports that Holder is not sure whether the Justice Department will pursue federal charges against Zimmerman.
Zimmerman, a vigilante neighborhood watchman, fatally shøt Trayvon Martin in an incident which sparked national headlines. The Sanford Police initially refused to arrest Zimmerman after the incident, prompting protests and outrage.
“I’m not sure exactly how much longer that will take, but we will get to a point where we are able to make a determination,” Holder said at a news conference.
Holder has previously promised to “take appropriate action” if his agency finds a federal civil rights violation in the case. He has also made it known that the government has a “very high barrier”, seemingly lowering expectations for a federal prosecution.
In July the U.S. Department of Justice began asking for the public’s help in determining whether federal charges should be brought against George Zimmerman for k!lling Trayvon Martin by setting up a tip line, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
“The most fundamental of civil rights – the right of life – was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin. We ask the Department of Justice file civil rights charges against Mr. Zimmerman for this egregious violation,” wrote the NAACP in July.
Attorney General Eric Holder has previously referred to Martin’s k!lling as a “tragic, unnecessary shooting dea†h.”
