President Obama apologized on Thursday to people who lost their health insurance due to new rules under Obamacare. During an interview with NBC, Obama apologized for promising people that they could keep their health insurance if they liked it, a promise which turned out to be false.
“I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me,” the president told NBC’s Chuck Todd.
So far millions of health insurers have dropped people from plans that don’t meet Obamacare’s requirements. Insurers are offering consumers more expensive plans to replace the plans they lost, since some of the lost plans were so-called “junk” plans, which are cheaper but don’t offer much by way of health coverage.
“We weren’t as clear as we needed to be in terms of the changes that were taking place”, added Obama.
He went on to say that aides at the White House are working hard to assure Americans and fix this issue.
“I’ve assigned my team to see what we can do to close some of the holes and gaps in the law.”
It was confirmed late Thursday that Obama has a White House team working to fix the problem.
Obama did, however, note during the interview that some consumers on the individual market were not as safe as many thought they were.
“The fact of the matter is that a whole lot of people who were in this individual market, who were buying health care on their own, because they’re not gettin’ it through their employer, they might be happy with it this year, and then suddenly next year, the cost got jacked up by 15 percent to 20 percent,” Obama said.
