African-American Chicago Teachers Sue Board of Education For Discrimination

A group of African-American teachers who were fired because of Chicago’s “turnaround” program are suing the Board of Education, classroomclaiming that the programs discriminated against African-American teachers.

CBS Chicago reports:

Donald L. Garrett Jr., Robert Green and Vivionell Brown Jr. blame CPS for a steady decline in black teachers from about 40 percent in 2000 to just under 30 percent in 2010. Since most black teachers are employed in South and West Side schools, “turning around” schools in those neighborhoods by firing all the staff and bringing in an entirely new team discriminates against African Americans, they allege in their lawsuit. All three men lost their jobs when their schools were turned around for weak academic performance; all three say they had satisfactory or better evaluations.

Now, Green, Garrett and Brown and the Teachers Union have filed suit against the Board of Education on behalf of teachers who lost their job because of the turnaround program.

Attorney Robin Potter, who represents the group,  said they’re seeking to get their jobs back, lost pay, damages, an independent monitor to oversee the turnaround process in the future, and a moratorium on turnarounds until a monitor’s in place.

“They weren’t the poorest performing schools, they weren’t the only schools on probation ­ — they were somewhat improving,” Potter said. “There are no published rules as to what schools are going to be subject to turnarounds.

“We’re now at a crossroads in Chicago where between school closings and the turnaround,” she continued, “the racial impact of the policies and practices of this board of education have devastated the African American teaching force in that community.”

    2) Because of the racist, white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia School District, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, no separate/required African –American History courses are taught! The United States must be forced to live up to its many great promises! We African-Americans have to be most forceful and vigilant in our demands to ensure that our African-American children learn of their great history!

    3) Too few African-American teachers are employed with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers-especially African-American males-because of the racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia School District, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers! Why are they so afraid of our African-American males?

    4) Over 60% of the racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia School District, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers live outside the city and Do Not and Cannot relate to our African-American Children! Their white supremacist strategy is to maintain and perpetuate the status quo; ours must be to void the status quo and dramatically change the model! We will engage in actions of Massive Non-Cooperation! The Enemy is miseducating our children! Fight them!

    5) The mean-spirited, and racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia School District, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, disrespect parents, guardians and friends of African-American children enrolled in the Philadelphia School District! The United States must be forced to live up to its many great promises! Dismantle the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers immediately as it is an institution that operates to the detriment of those it purports to serve! Destroy them now!

    6) Although 25% (or 15,000) of the over 60,000 Philadelphia School District high school students are absent from school each day, the unfeeling, uncaring and racist members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers have done absolutely nothing to keep our African-American children in school, and they never will! Providing “an Apartheid Type Education” is part of their white supremacist strategy!

    7) Philadelphia School District Teachers’ rosters are designed exclusively for the convenience of racist members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, not to meet the academic and social needs, nor promote the learning and advancement of our African-American children! This is pure arrogance, negligence and hatred!

    8) Racist members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers are petrified to have parents, guardians and friends of African-American children come into the schools and see, hear and know how incompetent, callous and irresponsible the white and Jewish people! It is truly amazing how little teaching really takes place in the Philadelphia School District with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers! The Philadelphia School District and the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers are guilty of Mentalcide: the Mental Murdering of our African-American children! Defeat the enemies!

    9) The indifferent, apathetic, and racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers of the Philadelphia School District make an average of $75,000 a year in base salary, and accept extra overtime pay while they fail to effectively tutor our African-American children. The United States must be forced to live up to its many great promises! We must dismantle this major economic atrocity immediately!

    10) Although the United States Supreme Court’s Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas decision of 1954, made segregated schools in the United States illegal, the white and Jewish members of the School District of Philadelphia, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, are violating the order of the Court by re-segregating the schools in the United States. They ignore the Court! This is acute Discrimination in public education and an affront to the Supreme Court. Fight!

    11) Far too much of the $1,900,000,00 budgeted for the Philadelphia School District’s 217,000 students is flagrantly wasted each year on the racist, white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers! They prostitute and pimp off the Philadelphia School District as they unremorsefully rob our African-American children of a high quality education! They are stealing our African-American children’s future! They are white supremacists carpetbaggers and mercenaries whose main purpose in our African-American schools is to promote white supremacy! Destroy the enemies!

    12) Our African-American children’s 14th Amendment rights are being egregiously violated every day as the white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia School District, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, intentionally deny our African-American children equal protection of the law by meeting or exceeding the District’s own standards of success! African-Americans still have no rights that white and Jewish people are legally and morally responsible to respect? Defeat the enemies now!

    13) These grossly overpaid, unjust, inconsiderate, incompetent, and racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the Philadelphia School District, are carpetbaggers and mercenaries who live in the suburbs, send their children to excellent schools, come into the city of Philadelphia to purposely miseducate, and fail to educate our African-American children while they promote white supremacy! Why aren’t white and Jewish children represented in the Philadelphia School District at the level of their populations in the city? White and Jewish people would not even consider, would not even think about, having their children enrolled in the Philadelphia School District! Destroy the enemies now!

    14) Cruel, insensitive, complacent, inconsiderate, incompetent and racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the School District of Philadelphia, are the very same people who are against Affirmative Action, support the Death Penalty, approve the discriminatory policies of Welfare Reform, move out of the city of Philadelphia to get away from African-Americans in efforts to keep our children from enrolling into the same excellent schools in the suburbs where their children are enrolled. Why then are they in our African-American schools? The Philadelphia School District’s white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers are in our segregated African-American schools to promote white supremacy! The United States has made too many false promises! We must stop these white supremacists by whatever means possible and necessary! Fight!

    15) The racist, white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia School District, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, discriminate against our African-American children by failing miserably to provide African-American children with the technology and facilities upgrades offered and provided to their own children enrolled in the excellent schools in the suburbs! The United States must be forced to live up to its many great promises! Once more, they are guilty of violating our precious children’s 14th Amendment Constitutional rights as they relate to Equal Protection of the Laws!

    16) Although Phonics provides an outstanding opportunity for all of our African-American Children to learn to read, the racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia School District, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, have made a conscious decision to terminate this extraordinarily important and successful program and educational resource! They act as if it is still a felony to teach African-American children to read! White and Jewish people are still acting like Slave Masters!

    17) Disrespectful, unconcerned, incompetent, cruel, and racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia School District, along with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, discriminate against African-American children by not permitting African-American children to take their most important textbooks home to study and do their homework! Many African-American children do not have access to textbooks at all, even while they are at school! White and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the School District of Philadelphia, are determined to severely limit how muck=h our African-American children learn! White and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the School District of Philadelphia, are determined to be our eternal enemies! If they are our enemies, we must treat them like the enemies they are and extricate the enemies from our midst by whatever means possible or necessary! We must always fight our enemies, always!

They are presently not prepared to teach our children effectively and get them ready to be their very best. They are not prepared to teach our African-American children to achieve the greatness of their promise! Destroy!

    22) These detached, greedy, immoral, pathetic, unjust, and racist white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the School District of Philadelphia, are determined to be our eternal enemies as they flee en masse from Philadelphia to avoid the disgraceful, Bantu-Like, Apartheid, segregated Philadelphia School District and avoid fair housing laws! This immoral, pathetic, unjust, and racist system was created by them to establish an inferior system to prevent African-American children from achieving their greatest, full potential! Seek and destroy!

    23) The pernicious, evil, non-nurturing morally challenged, white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the School District of Philadelphia, are determined to be our eternal enemies and exercise power and control over the 80% African-American super majority Philadelphia School District! What is the possibility of African-Americans having power and control over an 80% white and Jewish super majority? The answer is absolutely no chance whatsoever! Therefore, we want these vicious people out of our schools and out of our lives as we will have power and control of the schools that are ours! Always fight to destroy your enemies!

    24) The evil, unremorseful, hateful, and vicious white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the School District of Philadelphia, are determined to be our eternal enemies by preventing and impeding the ability, and opportunity of African-American children to reach their highest potential through overt actions, and by subtle neglect and omissions! Their actions have been pernicious, immoral and evil incarnate! Amandla: The Power Is Ours! Fight!

    25) The disgraceful, deadly, incompetent, hateful and scared white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the School District of Philadelphia, are purveyors of white supremacy! They are determined to be our eternal enemies and are completely disingenuous in their efforts to teach our African-American children! They are attempting to destroy our children and will use whatever methods necessary to accomplish that goal! Their crime is just as heinous profoundly pervasive as the physical enslavement of our African-American Ancestors! These white supremacists are committing the most vicious, deadly, comprehensive and long-lasting crime that can be perpetrated on a people! Their extremely pernicious crime is Mentalcide!     Special Notes
    Early Childhood Education is most important and fundamental to the future academic and social development and ultimate success of our precious African-American children! We must demand that federal funding of Early Childhood Education is significantly increased!

    Remedial Reading must be immediately restored to all the elementary, middle and high schools! Phonics must absolutely be used to teach our African-American children to read, starting at the level of
    Pre-Kindergarten! Teaching African-Americans to read seems to still be a felony in this country! Is it also still a felony to permit the “African-American Slaves” to know of their glorious ourstory? We must immediately discontinue the slave mentality of allowing the eternal enemies of our people to exercise power and control over our lives!

    Discrimination, prejudice and acute racism are still pervasive and rampart in all facets of American life. This pervasive unfairness is especially true in the Building Trades Unions! The white and Jewish members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, along with the School District of Philadelphia, are determined to be our eternal enemies as they have made another extremely conscious decision to not offer courses in Carpentry, Plumbing, Electricity, Brick Masonry, Roofing and other special courses in the building trade industry! These certified racists will not change their policies until such time that we force these immoral white and Jewish people to change! They are fully determined to own and control everything, including the crumbs! We must demand a share of everything, even beyond our so-called rightful share!

    African-American male administrators, teachers and other staff are needed to encourage, enlighten and empower our African-American children! We must now start to use all methods available to us in order to reach our objectives! We must rid ourselves of our dreaded enemies using all means available and practical! We must have power and control over the Philadelphia School District! We must Destroy Our Enemies: The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers!

    Well the truth of the matter is…the urban schools are behind…and it's not because a the black teacher….our babies come from homes that have issues and problems. When they come to school, they have a hard time dealing with rules and structure so that they can learn…if there is no discpline…then no teaching is taking place….Most teachers do not want to go and work in the trenches and deal with urban city schools where there is fighting, cursing, gang problems that are not coming from students, but from the parents of the school. Of course schools that are in the surburban areas and such are doing a much better job…probably got all of the materials too.

  4. Don’t get it twisted people. This attack on urban schools is really an attack against Black teachers for the JOBS! It’s about a dollar not the kids. These turnaround artists go from school district to school district with the claim they are going to turn the fix urban schools, fire black teachers, hire white ones and leave the school with poorer results than when they started and make enormous salaries doing so. If anybody needs to be held accountable its the people at the top because ultimately they are responsible but no one ever does.

  5. Yes, all teachers should be held accountable— but fairly across the board. In this case, the program is flawed and designed to disproportionately affect black / minority teachers since they make up the bulk of assignments in the underperforming urban areas.

    Moreover, any program put in place that may have such an impact ought to have clearly delineated rules and policies of what schools meet the criteria, what the goals are and the outcomes of either meeting or failing to meet expectations. This program has none and is being arbitrarily applied.

    Parents want the best education for their kids and effective teachers. However, they also want solutions to the school system ills that do not negatively impact their kids further by increasing class size and waste resources. That’s the problem with whitewashing things as opposed to fine-tuning the minute details of the solution proposed or in place. Implementation means nothing if you having covered the back-end effects and results.

  6. I wonder if there's more to this than just poor academic performance. There's been a "steady decline in Black teachers to just under 30 percent in 2010." If you're paying attention to all of the murders of young Black boys and men in Chicago, you would think that the school system would want to keep its Black male teachers while bringing in more, especially if they're doing a satisfactory job as they claim. I would hope that the board of ed knew the impact and importance of students having teachers that look like them. If these brothers don't win this case, it will be interesting to see who their replacements will be.
