The manhunt for ex-LAPD cop turned killer came to an end last night when the cabin Dorner was held up in burned to the ground. Dorner was suspected of going on a killing spree in retaliation for the systemic racism and brutality he experienced while working as an LAPD officer. Most of Dorner’s issues with the LAPD are detailed in his manifesto.
Last night a body believed to be that of Dorner was found in the charred remains of the cabin. Although Dorner threatened to bring “asymmetrical warfare” to the LAPD for being wrongfully dismissed from his job, it is still unclear who set the fire that killed Dorner.
The Guardian reports that police recordings suggest that officers set the fire that killed Dorner:
At around the 1min mark, a male voice says:
All right, Steve, we’re gonna go, er, we’re gonna go forward with the plan, with, er, with the burn [or burner]. We want it, er, like we talked about.
He then adds shortly afterwards:
Seven burners deployed and we have a fire.
A female voice responds:
Copy. Seven burners deployed and we have a fire.
At around 2min 20sec, a male voice says:
Guys, be ready on the No 4 side. We have fire in the front. He might come out the back.
At around 2min 50sec, a male voice requests a fire engine.
Next there were reports of gunfire inside the cabin, and we know the rest. This incident adds to the speculation that there were some members of the LAPD who didn’t want Dorner to come out of the situation alive. The motive is believed to either be driven by revenge for killing police officers, or due to the fact that Dorner was so willing to reveal secrets of the LAPD. Earlier in the week, the truck of 71-year old woman was riddled with bullets because the truck matched the description of Dorner. Officers on the scene don’t seem to have taken the time to identify who was actually inside the truck and the unarmed woman was not given a chance to surrender before she and her daughter were shot. This has led some to wonder if Dorner’s death wasn’t expected from the beginning.
