By Victor Trammell Sen. Dianne Feinstein, one of President Obama’s stauchest allies in the U.S. Senate said on Sunday that she will introduce a bill proposing a ban on assault weapons. In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, the 79-year-old senior member of the U.S. Senate stated that Obama will soon have the proper legislation “to lead on” in regard to the gun control debate. “We’ll be prepared to go, and I hope the nation will really help,” said Feinstein. Senator Feinstein said that she will personally introduce the bill when Congress reconvenes next month. The bill will also be proposed before the U.S. House of Representatives. Feinstein gave details of the bills stating: “We’re crafting this one. It’s being done with care. It’ll be ready on the first  day. It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation, and the possession. Not  retroactively, but prospectively. It will ban the same for big clips, drums or  strips of more than 10 bullets. There will be a bill.” (CNN.com) In 1994, Feinstein helped push though an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. The bill was never renewed. This new version of the 1994 bill will be better, according to Feinstein. She also stated in the interview: “ We believe we have (perfected it). We exempt over 900 specific weapons that  will not fall under the bill, but the purpose of this bill is to get …  ‘weapons of war’ off the street of our cities.” (CNN.com) Senator Feinstein also expressed confidence that President Obama will support the new gun control legislation. The December 14th massacre at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school is the latest in a series of mass shootings that have taken place over the course of Obama’s presidency. As a result of such violence, the ubiquitous issue of gun control continues to rise to the forefront.
