Jackson, who was shot in the head on Thursday evening while standing outside of a store in the city’s West Side Austin neighborhood. Jackson’s death marked a grim milestone for Chicago, as the city hasn’t reached 500 homicides since 2008, which ended with 513 homicides. Prior to 2008, the city hadn’t seen the homicide rate in the 500′s since 2004. According to the  Chicago Tribune,  homicides were up 17 percent over last year in Chicago, and shootings had increased by 11 percent, according to police statistics. A large portion of the spike in homicides took place in the early part of the year, when the city experienced abnormal warmth. In the first three months of the year, homicides ran about 60 percent ahead of the 2011 rate. In August, stories surfaced that homicides in Chicago were outpacing the number of troops who have been killed from explosions in Afghanistan. This year, February 19 and August 19 tied for having a record number of homicides in one day. Contrary to popular belief, the number of homicides in the city have decreased significantly since the early 2000′s. In 2000, the city had 633 homicides; in 2001, the city had 667 homicides; in 2002, the city had 656 homicides; and in 2003, the city had 601 homicides. From 2004-2007, the city’s number of homicides fell to the 400′s, but in 2008, it spiked back up to the 500′s and fell to the 400′s again from 2009-2011.

  1. How many shooting so far this year…. I ‘m during a stuy on gun shooting

  2. This is the results of black on black crime (the new KKK) and corrupted cops (the old KKK). When you combine the two in the inner cities the outcome in homicide is bound to be outrageous.
