What's Happening In Your World
Every day, in the news, it seems there are more and more people’s lives being ended by guns. In December, it was 27 people including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary. In January it was an innocent bystander in a gunfight at a community college in Texas. These were just the highly publicized incidents. Now in Chicago, Jesse Jackson and other citizens are calling for President Obama to come to the city to push the gun control laws to the forefront, hoping that leaders in the city will see how big of a problem it is and move forward with plans to help. In 2013 alone so far, there have been 42 homicides and 157 shootings just in Chicago. One of the people killed was a teen girl with a bright future who sang at Obama’s inauguration. Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to take 200 police officers, who are currently holding administrative duty positions, and put them on the street to help with the violence. Unfortunately, Chicago is a very large city, and this will barely make a dent in the crime. The teen girl who was killed, Hadiya Pendleton, was fatally wounded in a case of apparent mistaken identity. Her killer has yet to be found. Not everyone is in agreement with the President coming to Chicago as they say that this is happening in other cities too, not just the President’s hometown. Gun control laws have been the subject of debate for some time, but more recently they seem to be all we can talk about with all of the recent mass slayings. Even if assault weapons are revoked, does that mean gun violence will be reduced? If someone is going to commit a crime, they are not worried about breaking the law. Even if there are gun control laws, the criminal will find a way to get a gun or will use a different weapon. More people are calling for better mental health care and screenings instead of gun laws. Do you agree?
