Dr. Darron Smith: The Messianic Return of President Obama – Can and Will He Lead Blacks to Promise Land?

by Dr. Darron Smith

Its generally dangerous territory to criticize powerful people, especially when it’s the nation’s first black President. Tavis Smiley and Cornel West (http://www.povertytour.smileyandwest.com) learned this lesson the hard way in 2011 during their highly visible poverty tour. Cornel West, a strong supporter of the President in 2008, has been the most vocal critic with his characterizations of Mr. Obama as the “black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats.” West has gone with his criticisms to the point of intimating that the President is out of touch with the everyday suffering of Black Americans because he, Mr. Obama, that is to say, was not socialized himself to be a black man (http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2011/05/west_obama_a_bl.html). In response to his perspectives on the President, Cornel West experienced a bitter backlash against him from members of the black intelligentsia. Given that black Americans have endured a 246 year history of brutal chattel slavery followed by another 90 years of Jim Crow, it is perhaps then reasonable that Black Americans might feel the need to be a bit protective toward Mr. Obama and would want and even look for Messianic leadership from the first Black President to ease the burden of nearly 20 generations of race-based discrimination and gross racial inequality, still a pernicious reality in American life.

In the US, Blacks have yet to benefit from the fruits of the so-called “American Dream.” Black unemployment is still unacceptably high for millions; the unregulated predatory mortgage debacle disproportionately injured Black Americans with little federal relief rendered. And how about the prison industrial complex and mass incarceration of young black men and women removed from the workforce and their families, often branded and stigmatized as felons in America, which surely means a lifetime of second class citizenship? There is much more this president can still do for 43 million African Americans who so richly rewarded him with a whopping 96% of their vote in 2012 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rick-ross/black-voters-obama-2012_b_2086538.html). But Black Americans have to be careful not to get too caught up in romantic notions of the First Family and the President as the coming Messiah newly arrived. For many African Americans of faith, the president occupies a sacred place in their hearts and minds. He is above reproach and is the personification of hope and change, the deliverer from Pharaoh’s army. The blending of religious discourse with notions of American exceptionalism where every American gets a fair chance, as the President so often makes reference to, will not and cannot happen by ignoring issues relevant to the black community. When the LGBT community’s mounting criticism were leveled against the President for not addressing key issues for that community reached it’s peak, Mr. Obama responded by ending the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy and publically supporting same-sex marriages (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/05/obama-comes-out-i-think-same-sex-couples-should-be-able-to-get-married/). When Latinos took to the streets demanding that Washington address immigration on some level, the President likewise responded and gave them an executive order—The Dream Act (http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/15/us/immigration-deferred-deportation/index.htm). But what of Black folks? —those to whom he owes much to with regard to his reelection. The President has done very little thus far in his presidency for Black Americans. In fact, he has been overly cautious and careful to avoid being seen as too black (http://www.darronsmith.com/2012/10/dont-be-too-black-mr-president-the-racial-effect-of-president-obamas-performance-in-the-2012-presidential-debates/) by his white constituents, which has impacted his ability to deliver effective relief for millions African Americans anxiously waiting deliverance.

  1. Our President Obama is no different than any other Black
politician. They are politicians first and Black only when
it’s convienent for them. Look at the record of accomplis-
hment by the Congressional Black Caucus. They seldom ever
get anything done to benefit Black Americans. Check out
their constituencies and you find them the poorest and most
unemployed citizens in America. So it’s fantasy to expect
anything different from President Obama. We need to finally
realize that politics is the science of keeping the status
quo with as little change as possible.

  2. when the black community decides to develope a strong education and work ethic the 'inequalities' will not longer exist. stop looking to the government to fix what we should be doing OURSELVES. there are all sorts of tools and resources out there already in place- LEARN TO USE THEM.

  3. NO! He is not the Messiah!

  4. QUESTION: What is it going to take for the so-called African Americans to return to the de jure form of government which were founded and administered by our ancestors (Hebrew Israelites)? ANSWER: When the oppression of the Powers That Be which is masked as the de facto government of America, becomes subdued by light (truth) which destroys their logomachic deception dispersed by Christian ideas that were transliterated from the original Hebrew Israelite's Covenant or Constitution. The outcome of ancient truth will set up the scenario stripping the mental slave masters' sway carried out by the Black townsmen of America disguised as political leaders and voices that misguide and misrule those of their own so-called Black race. You'll find this type of deviant fearfully loving his oppressor, claiming to be successful in achieving the "American Dream," being supported by affirmative action mandates, etc.
Fact of the matter is that the so-called leaders and voices chattering among the so-called Blacks of today don't have answers to solve the problems of today. Otherwise racism and injustice wouldn't be the order of the day, unalienable rights would be the answer for true liberty among so-called Blacks, a clear prescription of ancient laws would be the light of a New Era [(In the beginning) NOW], re-assimilation into the culture prior to enslavement would exist on a large scale for the descendants of the so-called Negro Slaves, inequality and injustice would cease to exist, etc., reparations for the descendants of the Negro Slaves would become reality, and anyone reading this would not doubt the inevitable reality of these claims!!!

  5. If African Americans don’t begin to trust and respect each other and learn to pool our resources and take action and be responsible for our own survival as a group and create ouw leveled playing field, racism, hatred and ignorance will continue to cloud the judgement and hinder the competitive nature of those knuckle-dragging neanderthals who are still trying to teach the DoDo bird how to fly long distance. Two years ago when the house of Representatives made a massive change that these new republicans have taken the time to read over or through the many volumes of laws and pendind documents that currently exist, when you saw the speaker of the house not long ago drop the health care bill on the floor, how do you reject it without reading it, perhaps he is a functional illiterate and his buddy Mitch appears to have had a lobotomy of sorts, and the knuckeheads one from South Carolina, and John the 2008 republican candidate and a bunch of others were forced to move to a parallel universe after spending what is said to be over 300 million on Mitt Romney, counting on racism, hatred and ignorance to defeat a black man(you know they consider you black if you have any black blood in you)and his campaign team that steam rolled them in 2008 and skunked them in 2012 that Mitch fella that appears to have been labotomized said that the number one priority is to make him a one term president, now the economy has been tanked by his party, but fixing the economy and getting out of two wars that his party also started because W is fighting his daddy’s war, what is the priority here? If you don’t think there are black racist look at Herman Cain and Allen West. When a black guy whips a white guys butt you can say he had a stick or he jumped me when I wasn’t looking, but when a black guy beats a white guy for the top job in the land and all the world is watching and the butt whipping is unanimous even with all the racism, hatred, ignorance, lies and money and still could not prevail, I rest my case.

  6. Memorandum to POTUS Re-Elect Barack H. Obama.

    TO: POTUS Barack H. Obama
The White House – 1600 PA Avenue, N.W. – WDC

    FROM: Black Americans
    America Nationwide

SUBJ: Black American Unemployment & Youth Violence

Mr. Obama African American unemployment at 14.3% for black adults and over 40% for black youth is shameful, unacceptable, dangerous, and also undeniably the first major problem with the second being youth violence that Black America needs and expects you to urgently and effectively address.

There is something else that must be mentioned to you in possible correlation to disproportionately high African American unemployment as a pertinent reminder and a fact that also can not and should not be ignored. The overwhelming vast majority of large employers and business owners in America are still White Americans.

President Obama as you must or should well know already, extremely high and long term unemployment in the black community nationwide is not only devastating, but also fast breeds a host of other extremely serious and grave problems for many African American families, young adults, youth, and older citizens in every former income class across the board ranging from the formerly upper-income and middle-class to moderate and low-income. Herein we remind you of those problems.

The serious and grave problems from extremely high and long term African American unemployment includes wiped out life savings and college tuition funds representative of rapid complete and irrevocable loss of years earned financial gains, home foreclosures, forced sale of other valuables to pay utility bills and purchase bare basic necessities, tremendous anger, depression, domestic violence, poverty, increased government spending for Food Stamp, Medicaid, and Homelessness social service programs, increases in divorce and broken families, alcohol and drug use, suicides, homicides, other crimes, re-occuring and first time jail and prison sentences, and absolutely quite full and unmitigated despair and hopelessness.

President Obama with all due respect, Black America hereby trusts that you get the picture. We also know that a sincere congratulations to us and to you for your re-election is in order. Congratulations to you President Obama. Black America now for a second time again much hopes, looks forward to, and indeed very fully expects to see rapid emergency results of your new out-of-the-box-thinking to seriously address a powder keg of already 14.3% and steadily rising disproportionately high African American unemployment on both our and this nation’s behalf.

Undeniably, African Americans nationwide faithfully, graciously, and overwhelmingly helped you to not only gain, but to also keep your job. Please do something bold to ensure that we are not repeatedly denied the same opportunity. Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    Black America

  8. I heard this guy on a local black radio program here in Atlanta. He was weak and a disappointment. He couldn't even answer a simple question raised to him by the dim-wit black female host as to what specifically he expected Obama to do for black people. Before you come before an audience with a so-called book, please do some research and try to sound intelligent. I would be surprised if anyone purchased his book after that interview in the ATL. Hopefully, he did better in other cities.

  9. Blacks are no different from everybody else in that they need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and start creating their own opportunities. This waiting for someone else to figure out what they need to do to help you is foolishness. Non- English speaking Mexicans moved into this country and figured out that if they took jobs installing roofs, glad for whatever pay they got, they could make it. They’re now buying homes and taking care of their families. East Indians, Asians, West Indians,Nigerians, among others are migrating here and are becoming doctors, engineers, etc. ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICANS
and certainly not all of us- are having babies we can’t afford like rabbits, killing each other like wild animals, peddling drugs to get Escalades, and asking someone to create ooportunities for them. While I certainly have compassion from the infirm and truly needy. I, too, and tired of my tax money going to support able-bodies people who refuse to get an education or job training but expect somebody else to make a way for them. Get a grip.

  10. If people like, Darron Smith, Cornel West, Tavis Smiley, Boyce Watkins, and the other "scholars" like them just shut the f**k up and find something constructive to do we'll all be better off. The last thing we need is people like this constantly telling us how "poor and bad off" we are when any halfway intelligent person knows that they really don't give a damn. They keep this s**t going because it's the only thing in their miserable lives that make them feel important.

  11. ImNotThatBrainwashedBitchTheyTalkAbout

Blacks this, Blacks that! Stop it with the freaking Black bashing and be a part of the solutions. No one should have to tell Black people what, when, where and how to do anything. Blacks are much more smarter than that. Think, Plan and Execute! Blacks know this. Get busy and just plain start! On your marks, get set, GO!

  12. Boyce, get over it. President Obama won and you and the other three should just go away. Perhaps Rush will give you a job since Mitt doesn’t need you anymore!

  13. Well stated “truthbeliever”!!

  14. Dem & Gop are the same! we will go down the same road in the end! Obama is killing poor people night and day!

  15. I would that some nobleman would espouse to me exactly what it is that President Obama should do for African Americans and African Americans only! Should there be social programs and special training programs to benefit African Americans only? Should he build more housing projects that are bigger and better and helps our self esteem. Should he set up small businesses and appoint us each workplace? Should he give a $500 per month stipend for each baby we have that we otherwise wouldn’t be able to buy week’s worth of infant formula. Let him not send our young drug peddlers to prison, but set them up in little sub-communities and send in rehabiltators and social workers to help them overcome their fears and self-loathing. And give us more housing loans! We should be able to choose homes we clearly can’t afford and when faced with foreclosure, the federal government shoud forgive our loans and provide us with upgrades. Most of all, Where the heck are our reparations, President Obama?

  16. when was the last time he said the word "Poor"? I voted for him because mitt reminds me of hate still left to be extinguished. But about help lol. Obama is soft as a fig newton! Let the Gop paint him a failed pres. He "Never" just fights.Does anyone really now what he stands for? Oh yeah the status qua. Ron Paul got nuts! End the Federal Reserve will stop wars and end the Debt we are born with!

    • @Danielle, are you poor? Who's poor? Food stamps, section 8, welfare, unemployment checks, healthcare, cell phones, cable tv. What am I missing? If your spouse doesn't say "I love you", does that mean you aren't loved? If your spouse contantly tell you "I love you", does that mean you're loved?

  17. No he will not and he cannot, because you cannot lead people who cannot be led. You cannot lead people who are unorganized, you cannot lead people who have their opinion and will not surrender them for the good of all.You cannot lead people who are willing to kill each other over nothing for nothing other than he look at me with an attitude.
The only people who black people will followe is a PREACHER, who is only PIMPING THEM.
Black people have to begin to figure out what they want in order to achive it. You must knmow where you come from in order to know where you are going.
We do not want to revisit SLAVERY, because it is too painful. Well think about if you actually went throught it yoursely. We love to get things free, well there is nothing free in this world, maybe that is how we end up in slavery looking for something for free?.As they said no pain no gain. Most of the time we end up giving away what we already had by follwing the whit man trickery.Example the Berlin Conference 1884-1885 when Africa was devided up amongs the European Nations including the United States, and not one black person were there, that is what you would call the give away of our homeland, and we did not put up a fight. Because of the words of the Judio/Christian words of the bible. Not the word of God, the words written by men to benefit themselves and attribute it to God. Stop drinking the poison, and begin to ask questions
In order to move on we must know the history of slavery, its impact on our livbes today, and who did it to us.We already know who did it to us, but they must own up to it, or their ancestors must understand the preveledge position thet they enjoy is at our expense. This conversation must take place, in order for us to move forward. We worship whit people as if they are ordained by God with full dominion over the world. This is bull, and they will continue this behaviour until they are challenged.

  18. 19. If the president invited Smiley and West to the White House today for a snack, they would leave without any dialog of means, with a photo opt,a signed napkin, and lies about what was accomplished . President Obama has an agenda that will effect the nation which includes all races. This President only major failure, has been trying to get those lousy unAMERICAN disguised as REPUBLICAN,but are TEAPUBLICANS,TEAPARTY..trash,determine to see Kim fail. The PRESIDENT will not be hindered again,he will not wallow in the mud with those miserable low life politicians. SMILEY AND WEST are fake leaders, The way they have acted is a disgrace, President Obama was elected again because real AMERICANS wanted to send the message to TEAPUBLICANS, RACIAL DIVIDE, is not going to happen, we are the UNITED STATES,what if we as a people were weak enough to follow Smiley and West and the rock throwing and hiding hands,Watkins and Yvette, we as a people would look like fools to vote against PRESIDENT OBAMA,racism would be running rampant TODAY.The more things change the more they remain the same. Mississippi college is not an isolated incident, the remarks of all, OF ALL..the TEA PUBLICANS leadership, they each have made a remark of some kind to stir RACIAL DIVIDE. Please look at the results, COMMON SENSE,has prevailed GOD has given us a chance to get it right. The MASSES have spoken, let's give the TRUMPS,LIMBAUGH,GINGRICH,FOX (fake) NEWS….hell..we as a people have chose to give PEACE a chance….PEACE

  20. I do feel there is something the president should do to ease some of the woes so many African-Americans go thru on a day to day basis. But I also feel that thru his policies he's putting in act it is giving us a chance to help ourselves. He's trying to lift some of the obstructions that has long kept us from making that next step towards building our communities and strengthening our people. Here in Texas every race but our own has neighborhoods. businesses.etc. I feel his ultimate goal IS to give us a chance for better. And at the same time while he's taking care of what he's trying to implement, we need to also take the steps to do our homework on the next city official and state official elects to work with what he's trying to put into play. Every other race in possible every city in the country has some foundation or someone to be elected speaking on betterment of their communities we should also. Just something to put in y'all thoughts. Oh yeah, the candidate to be elected doesn't has to be a democrat. Its the best man or woman for your cause.

    • @Bryan, what specifically do you feel that the President should do? Everybody feels that President should do something but nobody knows what.

    • I'm like the rest. Where do you begin? Things are pretty messed up in so many areas. I feel we are in a position as a nation where we determine what our future holds. We the people have to do our part and weed out the people in office that are not looking out for what's best for the country but what's good for themselves. There's nothing he can do with so many stuck in the old ways that has the country in its current state, blocking every thing he's doing to better the country. It starts with us and our commitments to having better decision makers in offices held around the country. Obama has heard the problems we cry about. I feel he's setting things in place for us make our voices heard. He's showing us we can make THE differences to change the state of the country. Pretty much if we want change we need to make it happen. The solutions ly with us not him.
