What's Happening In Your World
According to the Huffington Post, the recent tragedy in Connecticut involving a shooting at an elementary school has led to millions of people reconsidering how they view gun ownership.  As evidence of this phenomenon, they cite hundreds of Americans who have chosen to participate in gun buyback programs. In major cities across America, gun buybacks had been previously scheduled, but the level of participation was off the charts this week. "I've got kids, man," said Arturo Hurtado, who sold some of his guns. Hurtado has four young children, and worries about the gun getting into their hands. "I don't know," he said. "I just know it had to go." This should be of interest to African Americans, since many of the communities where guns were sold the most are urban.  Many of the people who participated in the buyback programs did not do so for the money, instead, they get it to protect their families. The spike in gun sales comes at the same time that politicians are calling for additional gun control in response to the recent shooting.  Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) Says that the senate is going to introduce a ban on assault weapons in the very near future. In addition to increased participation and the gun buyback programs, there was an increased attendance at many churches.  It appears that Americans are reflecting on their existence in the midst of this tragic time.  This incident may change our country forever.
