It’s Official: Rob Parker Dropped From ESPN Over His RG3 Comments

ESPN commentator Rob Parker has reportedly been shown the door, and told that the network will not renew his contract. Mike rob-parkerSoltys, a vice president at the network, tweeted “Rob Parker’s contract expired at year end. Evaluating our needs and his work, including his recent RGIII comments, we decided not to renew.”

The sports pundit caused a great deal of controversy when he called Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, RGIII as he is known to fans, a “cornball brother.” Parker continued, saying:

“I’ve talked to some people in Washington, D.C. Some people in [Griffin's] press conferences. Some people I’ve known for a long time. My question, which is just a straight, honest question, is … is he a ‘brother,’ or is he a cornball ‘brother?’ He’s not really … he’s black, but he’s not really down with the cause. He’s not one of us. He’s kind of black, but he’s not really like the guy you’d want to hang out with. I just want to find out about him. I don’t know, because I keep hearing these things. He has a white fiancé,

Rob Parker may’ve made things worse for himself with comments he made on Sunday when he spoke with  WDIV-TV’s  Devin Scillian.

Parker said he was ‘shocked’ that his ‘cornball’ comments were taken out of context.

“It was never to condemn the young man,” Parker told Scillian. “RGIII is a great young man with  a bright future. It was more about concerns not condemning.”

Parker continued:

“It was just a conversation that’s had in the black community when athletes, or famous entertainers or whatever, push away from their people. And that’s really what it’s about. You saw it with O.J. Simpson, and some other people, where they say, ‘Well I’m not black, I’m O.J.’ So it’s more about that, not about RGIII and what’s going on. It’s more about this thing that we’ve battled for years and why people have pushed away from their people. It’s more about that.”

  1. He should not been fired , he was just telling the truth . Every time black man atheles make it big they are no longer black . OJ, Odom, Kobe, Woods, etc…they marrry white, they never co sign on black issues, they make statements like RG3 ” oh im not black Im american….oh wait till you get arrested , then you ll see, what you really are. lol …they kill me look at Micheal Jackson for long time didn t matter if your black or white even made a song about it …until white man almost hung him for some crap than all of sudden he relised oh it doems matter. Sadly all that stress end up killing him. Same keeps happening to other black male celebs who make it big…but no longer know where they come from …They think they are too good for black community so , now they aracial…So I believe this is what commentator was trying to communicate and he is right for telling truth …you should never be punished. Even if truth hurts.

  2. Rob Parker was simply stating that RGIII has a spactacular ignorance about race in this country – and he does! I get sick and tired of black people in general and black athletes in particular attempting desperately to divorce themselves from being who they are – BLACK. The reality is simply this – it doesn’t matter what you call yourself (i.e. Calbanasian) or how you wish to be perceived in America if you are black then there is no escaping that reality. This doesn’t mean you have to act a certain way because how you act, talk, walk, speak, dress or even who you marry will never change the fact that you are BLACK. Race matters in America and black life and black people are simply valued less than whites. Not one of us can run away from this no matter how much we try. That’s all Parker was trying to say!Rather than getting rid of the messenger they should give him a public forum to further discuss this taboo subject! Thanks Rob!

  3. Yep another Negro who has put his foot in his big mouth he should have realize that what he said wheather it was taken out of context or not will more or less always be the case people hear and read things from diffrent view points and it’s not a racist thing there have been many whites who have lost their jobs for their uncanning comments my motto is too choose your words wisely always think before you speak

  4. I am simply blown away with irrational reasoning by those in power positions…; Our President can be besmerched and disrespected by the media and God knows who else and it’s called freedom of speech.

Maybe I took too many blows to the head as an athlete, but our selective reasoning to become angry and appalled because some one expressed an “opinion” is mind boggling. The reporter did not lie, he would be known as or referred to as a “cornball” brother in some communities.

  5. Rob parker a bum. He should of been fired all rg3 said was he can throw the football dont label him or box him into a r running qb. He never ran from blackness. He said im Always gon be a African american that will never change. All yale won't to live in the 1950's acting like a certain way define blackness. Ir stand for something bs that era already passed rob parker can't comprehend, and was trying to push a agenda he sound dumb saying blackness is define by braids etc, rob parker to old too Say u have to act a certain way to be black every black person different. They don't all think and act the same some like Hispanic or white women some are Republican or rich. Hispanic and whites don't ever. question there ethnicity
why only blacks do that? Parker

  6. WHERE IS THE BLACK COMMUNITY ON MY COMPLAINTS IN AMERICA STARTING IN OHIO? MY FATHER WAS IN THE AIR FORCE AND THE WHITE COPS DIDN'T LIKE HIM IN OHIO. THEY SAID HE DIED RACING HIS SEMI TRUCK WITH ANOTHER TRUCKER AND CALLED MY MOTHER WITHOUT CALLING THE COMPANY HE DROVE FOR AND HAVING THEM DO IT! THEN THEY DESTROYED HIS WIDOWS FINANCES AND HIS STRONGEST SONS PRO SPORTS CAREER AND ALMOST HIS LIFE AND THEY BLAMED EVERYTHING ON US BLACKS AND NOT THEM CONSPIRING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN! I HAVE EVIDENCE THAT CAN PROVE THAT THEY ARE AN WERE CRIMINALS AND AMERICA IS WORSE OFF FOR ALLOWING THEM TO RULE AMERICA SINCE SLAVERY ENDED! DOUGLAS K. STEWARD IN WASHINGTON DC FOR TRUTH AN JUSTICE FOR ALL NOT JUST SOME! 2023617415

  7. Say what you want but if so he's being fired for being honest I have nothing against RG3 but if you folks want to act like far to many of these athletes aren't seeming a lil nuts for white women I give you Lamar Odom the poster boy for WTF !!!

    • after reading what he said (yeah, I don't keep up on my ESPN sports talk) I'm starting to think yer not black 'nuff, D…. granted, as a third party observer, and a mostly white mutt, I'm not much of an expert on what a proper, non 'cornball', black person is suppose to be.

    • Lmao ORSHOOOO where ya been man!?!?

    • not much man, just pimpin and hoing (ok, I'll quit:) with the family for the holidays & such… enjoying a bit of snow (though now melting) and reading & working and the such.

hope you been taking care of yourself in the proper 'down with the cause' black fashion there buddy ;) and hugging & smiling with the family.

  8. Marc Curtis Little

    Bad move.

  9. I thought he was just saying that he felt RGIII was turning his back on his black people. Am I wrong? For the record there is no such thing as ‘acting black’. IMO

  10. I am sorry, but the guy only said what we say to each other, he was just inquiring as to what type of consciences the young had, a white acculturated consciences are one that understands the black experiences and wants to use his position to advance the causes of black people , Jim Brown has for use called O.J. Simpson a cornbread brother. But once those white folks tried to

  11. skip bayless talked about Lebron james like dog..i diidnt hear any people say nothing about him gettin fired,,, steven a smith is a clown but one talks about what he says…rob parker was just sayin what some black people are sayin….rob always say what most brother are sayin in the barber shops…steven a smith is a house negro so that why he still on the show.

  12. Great! If he was not fired I would really be ticked!

I keep saying we have as many and are as racist as whites, we just won’t admit it, this clown just put it out on national TV so everyone can see for them selves.

  13. Fired for questioning an uncle tom lol

  14. It just goes to show you that white people still refuse to deal with the issue of race identity, Jim Brown has for years crisis O.J. Simpson for being a sale out , Rob Parker was just asking a question as to what type of black man was Robert Griffin , we as Black people ask that question also, is he a brother are is he a simulate black men who chooses to adapt his life style to that of white American's , now its now anything wrong with whatever he chooses to do. I think what he was trying to find out and asking is what can of black conscience does RG111 has a black man towards the struggle of black people, there's a big difference he. We all ask that same question is he black enough, simple meaning does he advance the causes of the black community. Give Rob a break he was right in questioning and wanting to know were the young mans stands. I think we are making to much of a issue of it. We as black people understand that. We are always looking to see if black athletes are advancing the causes of black underclass. Not that its their responsibility to do so. We wish that they would because of the high profile that have. White people has convince them that they don't have to this. Its a shame that athletes can empower themselves to create JOBS for there people. They are explored and acculturated in white society as a social accepted being because they make a lot of money for white people to explore.

@Owuwa Small – I feel you, I stand by everything I said. Please re-read starting with, "I truly HATE what he said and thought it was ignorant!" Should he no longer be allowed to feed his family because he said one stupid thing? Did you have something to say when Stephan A Smith said the N-word twice? I did and I was virtually alone! Suspended yes, fired…No! They say stupid shit on ESPN all the damn time, these are not the geniuses of media we're talking about. We can agree to disagree…You're still my bro ; ).

  16. The kid is a square, thats all!! Because he doesnt act like a crack baby you think something is wrong. He's ok and I wish him and his family the best… Rob, shame on you, you're the "CORNBALL"

  17. Chevonne Bowers Frank

He should be fired. If he were white we would be screaming for his head! Why does he get a pass because he is black? Seriously he should know better. I do not feel sorry for him at all!

  18. Shirley Gallagher

I'm glade ESPN drop Rob Parkerat last. There is two more that Espn needs to drop, the two First take loud mouth lip service pair.

  19. His comments truly went to far. Too bad for him because I thought he was a pretty intelliegent commentator before all of this. Perhaps he will find work at another network, after he has learned from all of this.

  20. the guy is an idiot… he shold not be allowed on the cartoon network….

  21. Chandler Windham

I truly hate what he said and thought it was ignorant but I don't think he should have been fired for it. I think it was up to the rest of the on air staff to call B.S on him. This is part of the problem with today's media. You get so much fake-ness. Suspended yes, fired, not unless you're going to fire Stephen A Smith who stupidly vomited the N-word twice, on air, on ESPN, at the very same network. Do you not see the hypocrisy in that? Rush Limbaugh can spew filth for 20 years unmolested but the first time a black man says something dumb, cooperate America want's to hurt his pockets…sigh* – http://www.thepeoplesmic.blogspot.com.

    • im gonna have to say this chan…and your my boy but fuck that guy… he should watch the dumb ignorant shit that comes out of his mouth… i feel that what he said was as racist and destructive as the n-word, i agree that stephen smith should be fired he too is an asshole and should be relieved of his position… fuck his pockets…I'm sure he isn't starving.

    • I'm actually fairly disgusted that many Black people or people of African decent believe that their is a specific way to be black and if you don't adhere or follow to said black life style according to theses people who generally piecemeal a concept of blackness from what they see on tv, hear on the radio, see in the streets, read in books, how big a booty you wanna be up in… these are aspects of some peoples realities but not over arching aspects of blackness… its funny how people pick and choose whats important to them… what defines them as people

    • Chevonne Bowers Frank

Bottom line is because he is black he should know better. The statement was silly and unprofessional and has nothing to do with anything. I can not stand it when a black person's character is questioned by other blacks because he is not acting in a certain way………soooo ignorant and we have to stop doing this to one another. RG111 can marry whomever he wants…….what we need to be paying attention to is why are so many young black males going to prison and not college!!!
