What's Happening In Your World
A few days after her husband, Jesse Jackson Jr., resigned from congress, Alderman Sandi Jackson filed a series of amendments to her ward committee’s campaign fund. Ald. Jackson’s amendments disclosed transactions that go as far back as the year 2009 that had previously not been disclosed. According to a Sun-Times review, among the transactions were at least $13,000 in transfers from her husband’s congressional account  into the Alderman’s ward organization account. Prior to the Congressman’s resignation, these transfers had not been disclosed. Some other new disclosures included transfers to Alderman Jackson’s 7th Ward Independent Political Organization (SWIPO) from Congressman Jackson. The transfers were monthly and were in the amount of $1,250 each month. While Rep. Jackson’s campaign fund disclosed that  the monthly $1,250 payments to SWIPO were for rent, as he shared a campaign office with his wife, the 7th Ward disclosure did not give an explanation for the  $1,250 transfers. On November 27, just five days after her husband’s resignation, Sandi Jackson amended her reports for the final quarter of 2010. The corrections disclosed an additional $20,000 in expenditures, that had not been previously disclosed, as well as$8,200 in transfers out of her husband’s congressional account. When Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned on November 22, the reasons he gave for his resignation were his  challenges with maintaining his heath as well as the federal probe into his finances. In total, Alderman Jackson’s office filed eight amendments, going back three years. Some of the amendments have created negative balances which, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections officials, could result in a review. Andy Nauman, deputy director of the division of campaign disclosure with the State Board of Elections, said, “It’s something that we would potentially put an inquiry out to the political committee to see what the circumstances were behind this.” Some of the amendments made have cited computer and staff issues as the reason for the lack of disclosure in the past.
