“LUV” starring Common

by Dorian Chandler, Your Black World

LUV is a new dramatic film hitting theaters on November 9 starring Common, Danny Glover, Meagan Good, Michael K. Williams, Charles S. Dutton and Denis Haysbert. The film, courtesy of Indomina Entertainment, is set in Baltimore and centers on an 11-year old orphaned boy named Woody (played by Michael Rainey Jr.). Woody spends a day with his uncle Vincent (played by Common) and learns some harsh realities about his beloved, recently returned from prison, uncle.

Sheldon Candis
is the writer and director behind LUV, which made its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The buzz around the film also peaked the interest of BET who acquired the television rights to the project. Candis’ real life childhood experiences are the inspiration behind his first feature. He reveals in an interview with Sundance that his own uncle was a famous drug dealer in Baltimore. As a child he would ride around in his uncle’s car similar to the characters Woody and Vincent.

The films trailer highlights a black male relationship that’s not often seen on the big screen. Watching a young black man look up to a black male role model is refreshing. Even though uncle Vincent is not what he truly appears to be he represents something real to an impressionable Woody. That sense of reality makes LUV a must see. Check out the trailer below.
