Liberal Talk Show Host Thom Hartmann: ‘Second Amendment Was Passed to Protect Slavery’

Whenever someone brings up the second amendment to a conservative, he or she always counters with the notion that the second slaveryamendment was added to the Constitution to protect American citizens from a tyrannical government, but that’s certainly not the whole story of the second amendment, as liberal talk show host Thom Hartmann shared on his show.

On Hartmann’s The Big Picture with Thom Hartmann, he said, “But I want to tell you something you don’t know about the Second Amendment ,something that’s been lost in the pages of history – that is very crucial to informing today’s current gun debate. And that’s this: The real reason the Second Amendment was ratified, and why it says ‘State’ instead of ‘Country,’ was to preserve the Slave Patrol Militias in the Southern States, which was necessary to get Virginia’s vote. Founders Patrick Henry, George Mason, and James Madison were totally clear on that…and we all should be too…Today’s Second Amendment is linked to our nation’s disturbing history of slavery. In the Beginning, there were the Militias. In the South, they were also called the ‘Slave Patrols,’ and they were regulated by the states.”

Thom Hartmann is certainly not the first person to openly acknowledge the role that protecting slavery played in crafting the second amendment. In an article published in the U.C. Davis Law Review, entitled The Hidden History of the Second Amendment, Professor Carl T. Bogus wrote that the Second Amendment was crafted to assure the southern states that Congress would not undermine the slave system by disarming the militia, which were then the principal instruments of slave control throughout the South.

Bogus wrote that founders Mason and Henry devised a plan to include the second amendment largely because  Virginia was nearly half black, and the white population lived in constant fear of slave insurrection. The main instrument of control was the militia. So the founders conceded to allow militias in an effort to protect slavery.

  7. ohhh black people better start stocking up on automatica weapons if they know whats good for them… but this time it will be 100 times more white people dying than the years before.

  8. If everybody is stockpiling weapons but black people, where does that leave us? The fact that the second ammendment was passed to protect slavery is a shame but what does that fact have to do with what’s going on right now, today? Nothing. We need to start thinking rationally and not emotionally. We need weapons to protect ourselves. Renee, I agree with you totally. How did we get from white male shooting up a school full of children to slavery????? The only thing black people need to say about guns is what the Black Panther party said…we have the right to arm and protect ourselves.

    • Latrice, The fact is, nobody is attempting to take away your right to bare arms. So the question begs, Why march? And what are they really against?

There is an underlying issue here by these marcher’s that begs an answer. Is this about the right to bare arms or something more sinister? Like the fact that some citizens simply enjoy marching on any issue that opposes our Presidents order.

      Beware !

  9. The militias have re-formed and have stockpiled guns. I wonder why. Is history about to repeat itself? My one pistol will not be a match for what my enemy will have. Many of you will step out with your bible in hand. I wonder how this will end.

    • Harold, good thought, however, I doubt there would be some RACIAL war in America. Sporadic Uprising Yes, but an all out War, Only in the mind of those who have lost it.

You can purchase 100’s of guns to protect your family but it only takes one person with a weapon to enter your home while you’re shooting at others to execute your entire clan.

Now the agressors have your guns to kill others who have stockpiled for no good reson.

  10. What a bunch of HORSE SH&T. EVERYONE should be glad the SECOND AMENDMENT is here, but it was not meant for anyone but LAWABIDING (then) male citizens to fight the Gov't if they went crazy like they are TODAY! If blacks OR anyone needs it it is still here for them. THANK GOD!

  11. Bogus is bogus. The only thing people in modern academia ever see are grievance groups. Pathetic.

  12. Patrick Gossett Hffhstuff

Then shouldnt we outlaw the Democrat Party who gave us slavery among every other autrocities in the US.

    • I love how the Democratic party has a African-American as the President of the United States, when the Democrats were the party that supported slavery during the 1800's. The Republicins were the ones who were anti-slavery and free the slaves.

  13. Don't like the 2nd amendment?

Then you have a remedy, get congress to pass a constitutional amendment repealing it and get 3/4 of the states to sign on to it (Lol! Good luck with that…).

Until then it's the supreme law of the land regardless of how or why it was added..

  14. Well said, but dont tell blacks that because we dont want to believe it.We fall for the propoganda that we are told. The only time we will believe it is when they reinstitute slavery and we find ourselves back in chains then we will believe. And it is coming mark my wordss. As the world economy changes and we see our position changes fro the dominant position these folk will try to enslave us. You see we tend to believe most of the stories we been told, because Jesus died for our sins, and he will deliver us.. Remember it isGod’s will, because it said so in the bible. And if it is in the bible then it shall be so.We will bitch about it, but we will go along with it. REMEMBER THIS NO BODY IS GOING TO DIE FOR YOU. NOBODY EVER DIED FOR YOUR BLACK ASSES. Get over the nonsense, and wake up and smell the coffee.

  15. And just to think, Andrew Jackson was a Democrat. :(

  16. First of all why do I see whites commenting on this site? I come here to get away from their stupidity and not to constantly read yet again their comments showcasing their proud ignorance. Sighs. Second, why are blacks and slavery the focal point of gun control when it is white nutcases going around on these mass shooting sprees? And people can save the talk about inner city gun violence. Look at gun violence on a national scale and whites commit 80% of gun violence in America. Also, no white person has any idea about the true corruption the government and police have in terms of violence in these inner cities. I just find it weird how once again a craze ass white boy guns down children and somehow black people are thrust into the center with different interpretations about slavery in America. Gotta love white reasoning or whatever makes them sleep at night. Their ignorance is mind boggling to me and repulsive at best.

    • Renee – and…racist. It works both ways only the willfully ignorant generalize an entire group of people.

    • Renee, I’d hug you if i could, I feel the same way.
Not that I am smarter or more intelligent than any other human, but when i read some of these white folks and NRA comments they are so blatantly ignorant and false that
I thank God not all citizens think like that.

And they truly know they are wrong but try and speak ignorance as though it is OK and True.

Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Romney, Gingrich, West and even Ms Love. These 2nd Amendment gatherings have very little to do with our right to bare arms.

There is an underlying agenda and purpose and I am certain it isn’t in the best interest of all citizens.

  17. Correction -, were, But

  18. Of most of the rebellions(BACON'S, Vessy, etc) from the 1700's to the mid 1800's, the main place that was first attacked was the armories (check ya history Matt) , so guns have always been important in control. Check the history of all The Indians Wars, gun shipments were commandeered without regard. Its always about control, and weak azz people need the gun because of false courage ..Bug remember this, ain't no fun when the rabbit got the gun….

    • I never said guns weren't important in a control factor… it's obvious. Did you even read this article and comprehend what it's about? Weak azz people need guns..? I think your perception of reality is all jacked up.

  19. BINGOOOOOO!!!!! People lets not play dumb. BLACKS DID NOT STAY IN SLAVERY AND THOSE HORRIBLE CONDITIONS BECAUSE THEY LOVED IT! They because they were disarmed and the whites kept them under control by guns!!!!! So everyone else can preach this gun talk but i know my country’s historical resume!! PEOPLE NEED TO LOOK UP THE INDIAN REMOVAL ACT OF 1830 by President Andrew Jackson and see how a negotiation turned to a mandate at gunpoint…. My HBCUs and a mother that taught black and american history schooled me well!!

    • Good Stuff and well said! I educated myself on “our” history and already schooling my young boys about it so that they know as well. Shouts to your mom for educating you on the real…. :)

  20. I wonder if there is any truth to this?

    • Absolutely not. The founding fathers wrote the constitution to make sure nothing could ever put Americans in the situation they were in with a govt that had absolute power over the people. It had nothing to do with slavery.

    • why would the northern states sign on to it then since they did not want slavery……

    • Matt Fowler Yeah just like Columbus discovered America, All men are created equal, and Iraq had weapons of mass destruction… The constitution was written as slaves were walking around serving tea and crumpets. The so-called founding fathers were slave owners themselves and had every intention of protecting that institution. No matter how sanitized America's history appears to be, its history is rooted in stolen labor to work stolen land. Indentured servants who had worked out off their debt were seen as threats to the order in the colonial cities. So they were given guns and credit and sent inward to settle more land. When necessary these white men would be galvanized to either kill Native Americans or capture runaway slaves. The 2nd Amendment was drafted to protect the right of these slave patrolling, Indian killing militias. This has been advanced in many different historical references such as American Slavery American Freedom: The Ordeal of Colonial Virginia by Edmund Morgan. This text was written in 1995 and the references to the slave patrolling militias were not the central focus of the text. So there is no reason to believe that this research had any anti 2nd amendment agenda that would specifically speak to this debate that America is having in 2013.

Americans can be so willfully ignorant about their country's past. And while I know this is by design, it still creates a barrier to having truthful discussion about America's shady gun culture. I am not opposed to guns, but they is something deeply racist about the American gun culture.

I live in Chicago, and there are no gun stores here. I had to go to the white community outside of Chicago to retrieve some ammo (Tinley Park, IL). What I saw at this gun store was primarily AR-15s. I can't recall seeing one bonafied hunting rifle and very few shotguns. What are all of these assault rifles for? Evidently they were in high demand because that was their central inventory. What are these white people trying to get ready for?

    • Matt Fowler and it (Constitution & Bill of Rights) had nothing to do with the African's some of them were enslaving while others while disagreeing did not nothing to stop and it still continues to this day because of the 13th Amendment. We have to remove legal slavery from the Constitution, it is the issue of our time. http://tinyurl.com/endlegalslavery

    • Paul Kregness, You realize the Civil War wasn't over slavery right? It was an issue, but that's not the reason at all that it happened… in fact Lincoln owned slaves. And Eric you live in Chicago where there is the strictest gun control laws? How's that highest murder rate in the country working out for you?

The 2nd Amendment is not for hunting, I'm not sure how many times that has to be drilled into your thick liberal skull before you realize it. It is to protect the people from the government. Did that answer your question about what the rifles are for? And yes they are in very high demand because our govt is all fucked up.

  21. This is retarded… Only a fool would believe this.
