Local Pastors Demand That Marissa Alexander Accept Plea Deal

Florida prosecutor Angela Corey, who was at best mediocre in her prosecution of George Zimmerman, Image marissa-alexander-300x155.jpghas pulled out all the stops in her prosecution of Marissa Alexander.  If found guilty during her retrial, Alexander could face up to 60 years in prison, which would be longer than her original sentence.

This has caused local pastors in the area, who view the trial as a “distraction” away from more important issues,  to demand that Corey offer Alexander a plea deal of three years and Alexander to accept the deal if offered. Alexander was offered the three year plea deal on aggravated assaµlt charges during the first trial but refused the offer.

The pastors sent a letter to Corey asking her to extend the plea deal to Alexander.

“There is an ongoing battle in Jacksonville a lot of v¡olence and murder and the pastors want to get this under control. And this really is a distraction,” said Ken Adkins, pastor of Greater Dimensions Christian Fellowship, according to News4Jax.

Alexander claimed she was acting in self defense and standing her ground when she allegedly fired warning shøts at her husband. A judge disagreed with her defense and sentenced her to 20 years in prison. Her conviction was overturned last year but she still faces a retrial on the charges.

“We need to move beyond this so we can begin to heal this city. As community leaders who have a vested interest in this community; we believe that justice would best be served by this very fair offer and it is our prayer that Miss Alexander accepts this offer so she could receive credit for time served, complete the remainder of her sentence and continue on with her life,” said Adkins.

The State Attorney’s Office confirmed Friday evening that it had received the letter from the pastors but declined to publicly offer any plea deals.

  1. Does this group know that Ms Alexander has twins that will miss out on being with their mother if she if found guilty a 2nd time? Anything is better than being locked up. One blogger wrote that she should take the deal and clear her name while free. that is a smart choice IMHO.

To those that believe she should fight, I would suggest you get familiar with Florida’s 10-20-life law before speaking again. Warning shot aside, she shot, and thats all that matters in Florida. Same thing Michael Dunn was convicted of, shooting, not killing. The law is not on her side.

If the deal is offered again, she should think about those twins 1st. Time served….

  2. TAKE THE DEAL !! TAKE THE DEAL !!! You missed out once and now you’re getting a SECOND CHANCE ? What’s wrong with you ? 1.Time served ,2. Your out 3. AND you can work on clearing your name FROM OUTSIDE OF JAIL , What is there to think about ? TAKE THE DEAL AND RUN !!!!

Accepting a plea is tantamount to an admission of guilt. Marissa Alexander is not guilty of anything but tolerating the abuse as long as she did . . . if only she could have gotten away from her aggressor. . . too bad she stood her ground as she did – by shooting in the air! On the flip side, had she shot him , she might still be in this predicament, What is a battered woman to do? Grin and bear it? Be scarred for life?. . . I not only have represented many women faced with the few choices of a battered woman; but I too was assaulted and injured by one who claimed to have loved me; and for a period of time, lived in such fear, having come close to death several times. Not even my family knew what was going on. Certainly not my colleagues or clients, for whom I zealously fought. Now I speak freely, if only to empower others. . . . As much as I hate to admit it, there are way too many Black men, who are threatened by the mere fact of an independent, self-sufficient, and self-sustaining woman, for it undermines their own personal self-image. They feel disempowered by this racist society, but take their frustrations and aggressions out on those who are closest to them. Even though the children may no be the targets of their raging frustrations, too often, they are caught up in the moment, becoming victims themselves . . . however unintended. Still, my professional experience tells me that white men are equally aggressive, even among those who swear to protect and serve. This is the result of a homophobic society which undervalues women’s interests. Hence, a justice system which tends to underserve battered women in favor of homophobic beliefs, even to the point of granting batterers gun permits. The following article reflects the gravity of the situation in my hometown, the same city in which I matriculated the justice system, both as a lawyer and domestic violence statistic. My prayers go out to my namesake, Marissa Alexander in Florida, where “stand your ground” laws justified a senseless child murder; but gives no relief to a battered woman, whose alternative was to kill her aggressor. May true justice be served and finally give her; as well as the many women who are similarly situated . . . peace. http://www.tennessean.com/article/20140309/COLUMNIST0101/303090084/Gail-Kerr-Domestic-violence-thorny-issue-DA-candidates

  4. The law is for the law breaker…when
Ms.Alexander stood her ground and fired
A warning shot; There was no transgression
Of the Law.So what are those mealy mouth
    Preachers talking about.The Black folk
There should bouycott the region and their
Churches too! It’s alright for white men
To kill Black people, but when we look
At the fact that this woman decided not
To kill that ***** they punished her for
    Not doing it!SMDH!!!

  5. Would these be the same pimps that recently advocated the death penalty for Black males in Florida??

  6. Another Pimp putting his foot in his mouth. Wow! Know them by their actions or lack thereof. When Black African Americans stop listening to and supporting these types of Pimps and Hustler in our communities, who lack the moral courage of a mustard seed, then our community will improve. Many of them use the religion giving to Black Folks during our enslavement as a tool to keep us enslaved back then, as a way to maintain us in our current conditions today.
    So Sad!

  7. I get all of the commentary here, but really folks she NEEDS to take the deal. We’re talking about the state of Florida! She is going to get that 60 years if she doesn’t…

  8. Mrs Alexander is not the problem, the problem is ***************….. and it did not start with her…. By Imam W. Deen Mohammed

What would happen if people would sit in churches throughout the world for centuries with the image of an African American man as savior of the worid before them?

What would this do to the mind of the world’s children?

What would happen to the world’s children put under a figure of a particular race presented, pitiable, and in pain “the Savior of all men”?

  9. I disagree with the Pastors. Their focus should be on truth and justice,PERIOD. Anytime there is injustice it should not be looked upon as an “inconvenience” and “distraction” to be “disposed of in the most convenient, compact way”. WWJD? Stand and speak truth to Power. These clergy need to bulk up in the courage department or sit down. This woman’s life and freedom should not be compromised because these ‘Local Pastors” can’t multitask. PITIFUL.

  10. Since when pastors tell anyone to take a plead deal, are they legal experts? Also when white folks kill black people its jackass like these same pastors who have an vested intrest in the community that does nothing…..she never killed anyone. Let’s stop with these double standards and be real in how we move forward
