Pendleton, a 15 year old honor student, was gunned down on January 29th, about one week after performing at President Obama’s inauguration.
Obama will be accompanied at the funeral by Valerie Jarrett, a senior advisor to the president, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Push Coalition held a march last week in memory of Hadiyah Pendleton, during which time Jackson implored Obama to come home and address gun violence.
“When the president shows up, it shows ultimate national seriousness,” said Jackson, a Chicago resident.
Gun violence in Chicago has been in the national spotlight over the past year, with 506 murders in 2012, an increase of 17 percent from the previous year. As of Thursday, there were 42 homicides and 157 shootings so far this year, according to Chicago police.
