National Conference of Black Mayors Demand Resignation of Director Over Alleged Theft

Twenty one mayors from across the country are calling on the director of the National Conference of Black Mayors to resign over thenational conference of black mayorsmisuse of $600,000, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. The mayors are accusing director Vanessa Williams of running up inappropriate business expenses and have filed court papers against Williams.

The National Conference of Black Mayors is reportedly in debt, and while investigating the debt, Fox reporter Dale Russell helped uncover the source of that debt, which is allegedly due in part  to Williams’ shopping sprees at Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany’s.

Even though Williams has been shopping, she’s reportedly left a slew of unpaid bills across the country. There are vendors who haven’t been paid as well as bounced checks and tax liens. In all, the organization is in debt to the tune of over $1 million dollars.

Williams blames the debt on the embezzlement of a former board member, but Fox 5’s investigative team insist that Williams has improperly used funds from the organization. Fox 5 also noted that during its most recent convention, the the board elected Sacramento Mayor and former NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson as its new president and launched an investigation.

Mayor Johnson then sued Vanessa Williams, accusing her of being uncooperative. Williams filed a counterclaim alleging that Johnson was improperly elected. A Georgia court ordered Ms. Williams to turn over financial reports in July, but Johnson’s lawyers claim they still haven’t received the reports.

Johnson’s lawyers  did, however, go directly to the bank for information, where they found purchases from Tiffany’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Juicy Couture, Louis Vuitton, ticket broker StubHub, Toys ‘R’ Us, private Christian school tuition and cash payments to Williams.

These new revelations spurred 21 mayors to sign a petition calling on Williams to resign.
