What's Happening In Your World
Tragedies tend to bring people together and they also make people angry.  There is probably no easier way to upset the entire nation very quickly than the events which transpired last weekend.  The Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre will lie heavy on the hearts and minds of millions of Americans for the next 50 years. The president isn’t able to get away from this issue and the gun lobby has avoided it almost entirely.  The president went to Newtown, Connecticut to console the people of that town, and the visit occurred in the midst of cries from prominent figures for the president and Congress to do something about America’s gun laws.  One of those people is New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg and various US Senators are calling on President Obama to tell Congress to reinstate the ban on assault weapons.  Assault weapons are regularly used in many of the massacres that have taken place over the past year, including the one in Connecticut.   Bloomberg praised President Obama for his tearful reaction to the tragedy, but also said that he must now make gun control a priority. “It’s time for the president to stand up and lead and tell the country what we should do. Not go to Congress and say: what do you guys want to do? This should be his number one agenda. He’s the president of the United States and if he does nothing during his second term, something like 48,000 Americans will be killed with illegal guns. That’s is roughly the number of Americans killed during the whole Vietnam war,” said Bloomberg, on NBC’s Meet the Press. Bill Clinton pushed the ban on assault weapons through Congress in 1994, and the ban was lifted by the Bush Administration. “I don’t think the founding fathers had the idea that every man, woman and child could carry an assault weapon,” said Bloomberg. “I think the president through his leadership could get a bill like that through Congress, but at least he’s got to try.”
