By Victor Trammell World peace icon and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela was finally released from the hospital after spending 18 days there. The 94-year-old Mandela recovered from a lung infection and gallstone surgery. He is now staying at his residence in Johannesburg, South Africa. According to presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj, Mandela is currently receiving “home-based high care” at his home in Houghton, a neighborhood in Johannesburg. “We thank the public and the media for the good wishes and for according Madiba and the family the necessary privacy,” said Maharaj in a statement, using Mandela’s clan name, which is a term of affection. The statement requested that Mandela’s privacy continue to be respected “in order to allow for the best possible conditions for full recovery.” (Atlanta Black Star) South African President Jacob Zuma was also with Mandela at his side on Christmas Day at the Pretoria, South Africa hospital he stayed at. Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, and other family members were present at Mandela’s bedside as well. President Zuma said Mandela was in “good spirits.” Sipho Sibiko, a Soweto resident, told the Associated press: “ I think he is an icon of hope and we are very excited [that Mandela is out of the hospital]. I personally know that he is one of the people that inspired me. He inspires a lot of people and we are excited that he has been released. We wish him many more joyous years and good health.” ( The Associated Press) Nelson Mandela was formerly South Africa’s president from 1994 to 1999. He spent 27 years in prison for being a staunch anti-apartheid activist. He is a hero all across the world for helping South Africa rid itself of oppressive minority rule under apartheid.
