Rev. Jesse Jackson Encourages Inmates to Help Get Guns Off of The Streets

During his traditional Christmas day sermon at the Cook County Jail, Civil Rights Pioneer Rev. Jesse Jackson challenged inmates to help get weapons off of the streets.

.

No matter what your viewpoints are on Rev. Jesse Jackson and his work, one thing you must admit and respect is his consistency. Rev. Jackson is 71-years-old and has maintained traditions that others would’ve abandoned a long time ago. One of those traditions is giving an annual sermon in the Cook County Jail on Christmas Day.

During his sermon, Rev. Jackson turned to the inmates, urging them to assist with getting guns off of the street. Although he did not present a specific strategy on the role inmates will play in getting guns off of the streets, he said inmates could provide insight. He told them: “You want to turn your jail cell into a classroom. Turn your jail cell into a prayer closet.” Prior to starting his sermon, Rev. Jackson walked around the jail auditorium and shook hands with inmates. In addition to encouraging them to assist with taking guns off of the streets, Rev. Jackson encouraged the inmates to get tested for HIV, to register to vote, and to pray for forgiveness.

After preaching a touching sermon that brought the inmates to their knees and to tears, Rev. Jackson spoke to the press saying: “We’ve all been grieving about the violence in Newtown, Connecticut, the last few days. Most of those here today … have either shot somebody or been shot. We’re recruiting them to help us stop the flow of guns … We need their awareness of the dangers of more guns and more drugs.”

Rev. Jackson has been a long supporter of gun control, including a ban on assault weapons.

  1. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men. Martin Luther King Jr

  2. I don't agree with jessee on alot of things, gun control being one of them, but praying for inmates trying to get them to turn their lives around, and stop using guns for violence…cant argue with that. Well Played Jesse, well played.

  3. One life is no more valuable than the other, no matter the color. Sometimes it takes a straw to break the camel’s back, but, straws were already there. So maybe Sandy Hook will help make a difference for everyone. God works in mysterious ways.

  4. I got it, he could even have a Motto : NOW IS THE TIME TO GIVE UP THE NINE

  6. What goes around comes around, which means that the universe (God),who are one in the same has a very unique and deliberate way of exacting revenge and balance, With out exception. With that said, just because they don’t care when our childern die, does’nt mean that we should’nt care if theirs’ die. If we’re just as treacherous, sick, and callus as them, how does that make us any better, and where then do we get the right to criticize their behavior, But if this is what it takes to open their eyes, may his will be done, and those children did’nt die in vain. But remember, all children are innocent, and they don’t make policy.

  8. I don't understand, one black boy is killed in Sanford, Florida and all the civil rights leaders show up, but now they have proff of black kid's abused, beaten, killed and buried at the now closed Dozier Boys School at Marianna, Florida. USF of Tampa, Florida are finding all these forgotten graves of these kids, so where is the Rev. Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton when we need them to step in and give Dr. Erin Kimmerle of USF support and help them to uncover the truth, because this has been a cover up by the state of Florida. Please help us find justice.

    • Terry V Levins that is very bad to say the least. How many black children were beaten I went the site I saw white boys, in the video at the bottom of the page I saw a video with to older black men, unless there are hiding this seems to me a white issue and not our issue. But like I said it's bad just not our issue.

  9. I admire Jesse for his tenacity and nerve, he as helped with the suppression of our people and has the nerve to tell us to put down our guns.Tell that to the people that are emptying the shelves of the gun shops. Our government has prepared fema camps across the country. Our constitution(that's right ours) states that it is our right to be armed and the politicians are proving we better stay an armed country.Sensible gun ownership is what's needed.Just like crack and all the other illegal things that make it to our community. They can stop them too.Jesse knows and is a member of the council on foreign relations whose agenda at this point in time is to destabilize Africa. He also knows that this is and continues to be the greatest human in justice known to man, and he is a participant to do his people in.Check it out history does not lie…..unless they write the book.

  10. I wonder who is paying for Jessie Jackson, going to the prison to preach to the captive audience?. Who know his organization may be selling the guns the criminals are using to commit some of the murders.

  12. Not impressed , the black community has been shot up and mutilated for decades . Now that it has happened in a environment that is not representative of the prevailing sentiment that it happens in “those peoples neighborhood “we want to act . This is shameless and to extent pitiful on how marginalized our children have been for eons . I don’t have the answer, but damn can we get in front of the issues can’t we press change . I don’t necessariy agree with everything posted on this site but gee whiz give me a break . This stuff happens everyday , I think we are more impressed with reaction instead of action .

    • Why is there always somebody out there who doesn’t like the actions being taken in the community but NEVER, has his own solution, and worse, NEVER, EVER has his own actions? I don’t always agree with Rev. Jackson but at least he’s doing SOMETHING!! Quit beating your chops (not just James, but all the rest of you) and start beating the pavement! Get busy! There’s too much work to do. Obama can’t do it all!!

  13. That nigger would say something like that I don't weep for them in Newton I'm not happy but I'm not sad either. They are dead and it's life and God was watching! Because white children are dead now they want to talk about gun control but when black babies are dying no one wants to even think gun control! Jessie needs to confess for being a snitch for the FBI and setting Dr King up to be Killed! Truth has come to you~.

  14. I'm not falling for the banana in the tail pipe. jesse jackson is full of shyt. he be pimpin, just like that farrakhan fool..all those babies who died in chicago.
due to gun violence, never heard from jesse monkie ass…but now since some white babies got killed…now here he come with gun control advice..negro please…go sit yo rainbow ass down somewhere…and donate some of that money you squeezed out of coca cola, for the sake of black people….

  15. It is a shame it took this lilywhite community's tragedy to bring everybody together on this, but let's be thankful that we are together on this.He has my complete support.

  16. The bible encourages us to visit prisions.

  17. "The mouth of the just man utters wisdom, & his lips speak what is right" (Psalm 37).

  18. Moses couldn't talk; Jesus was a carpenter; Muhammad couldn't read or write: God never has and He never will use those who are are most able; He only uses those who are most unable for the job. Who is more able to change the mind of a killer than another killer? Great Idea Jessie Jackson.

  19. I don't agree with all his views , but I support this
