Russell Simmons Teaches Don Lemon How to Really Care for the Black Community

wepoepospoqBy Victor Trammell

CNN anchor Don Lemon got a series of critical responses after his public co-signing of another one of Bill O’Reilly’s stereotypical rebukes of the black race in America.

The Your Black World online network reported a high-profile response from one of Lemon’s biggest critics, Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons. Via Twitter, Simmons wrote off Lemon (who is a homosexual) as a “dummy.”

Simmons’ world entertainment news website, GlobalGrind.com also featured an open letter of criticism of Lemon, which was written by Uncle Rush himself. A portion of the the August 2nd letter reads as follows:

Dear Don,

If you want to tell the rest of America this weekend when you go back on CNN how we fix black America, tell them to re-start the “War on Poverty.” Tell them to end the failed “War on Drugs” that has cost this nation over one trillion dollars and unjustly incarcerated a generation of black men. Tell them to support the President’s plan for universal Pre-K, so no child enters elementary school having to play catch up with the other children who are fortunate enough to go to pre-school.

Tell them make college affordable and obtainable for young students who come from low-income families. Tell them that the right to a healthy life should be universal and not just for the fortunate few. And lastly, tell them that young black men and women don’t just need “role models” or “mentors,” they need “sponsors” who are willing to offer them a job.

I want the black kids to grow up and be like you. I want them to know that their imagination is god inside of them and I want all kids, but especially black kids, to have the freedom to dream as well to create their own language. After all, without their jazz, blues, rock n’ roll and now their hip-hop, America wouldn’t even have a language of its own, much less a culture. (GlobalGrind.com)

  5. I must express some thanks to this writer for bailing me out of this crisis. Right after browsing throughout the world wide web and seeing solutions that were not pleasant, I figured my entire life was over. Existing minus the approaches to the issues you have sorted out all through the short article is a critical case, and ones which could have badly damaged my career if I hadn’t come across your site. That mastery and kindness in maneuvering the whole thing was invaluable. I’m not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t encountered such a subject like this. I am able to at this point look forward to my future. Thank you so much for your skilled and effective help. I will not think twice to suggest your web page to any person who should have guidance on this problem.…I will be happy if you visit my blog and say something http://twitter-guide-1.blogspot.com/

  7. There are some interesting points in time on this page but I don’t determine if I see all of them center to heart. There is certainly some quality but I will take hold opinion until We look into that further. Piece of content , thanks so we want a lot more! Added to FeedBurner also

  8. Why are people taking issue with the Homosexual description. He is a homosexual, is he not? Not that I care or anything, But he is indeed a homosexual.

Don is condescending and patronising of the very same culture he came from. Raise in Louisiana, he should know better. To simplify something as complicated as the plight of young black men into a simplistic issue of dressing is wrong, uncalled for and frankly infuriating.

Dear Don, you are one of us, but you are different, everyone is. As you like to wear suits and tie, I like to wear hoodies and jeans. I don’t deserve to get shot cos of it.

  9. WHAT does Lemon’s homosexuality have to do with anything?! Seriously?!

  10. A profound message, indeed. #Musology

  11. Lemon’s homoniss shouldn’t enter into the discussion!!

  12. I appreciate Russell Simmons comments and agree with much of what he said. However, the author of this article loses all credibility with his attempt at demonizing Don because he is a homosexual. His homosexuality had nothing to do with his comments and has no relevance to this conversation.

  13. We have a very valuable resource, in the black community, that is not being used, to it’s fullest.
The church, we should figure out a way to get the food from the agriculture department, and have the children dropped off at church, instead of home, where they would get their dinner, and while there, church members would tutor them in reading, writing, and the sciences. When we do this every child will be brought to grade level and kept there by the members of the Church of their community. If we would use our resources to the fullest, we would have less drop outs, from High School, followed by less lock-ups in the County Jails. Please lets all join together, and see if we have the ability to get ten (10) people in every church to agree to help the children learn to enjoy going to school by being good at what they do, because we are going to do all we can in our various communities to make sure that every child is at grade level, and will be kept there as long as he or she is in our community, where our church is. I have a feeling, that if we do that, insted of calling names we can empy all the prisons in this country in twentyfive (25) years. So please lets all put aside the name calling and small talk, and do something that has not been tried in the black community. That is use every resource we have, to help bring the minds of the childre, at a young age, to the academic level where every other child is. tom

  14. about two years ago while watching run’s house an episode came on where Russell Simmons stated to his brother, and i quote when i touch down in Russia my guide as me was there anything he could get him and he said some cocaine and pussy i held him up as a role model for young black’s now i dont any statement he make’s is just talk when he uses drugs himself.keep his mouth close’continue to date women young enough to be his daughter’but don’t make comment’s send a portion of his money he is making off his business to these poor neighborhoods to make a different.

  15. There is a saying, “..get the plank out of your own eyes first, then maybe you’ll be able to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye”. This saying is all inclusive when you take into account “who” is giving advice to “whom”. This is especially true when you’re a public figure, “the more authority/influence you possess the more responsibility is upon you”. I say this to point out that neither Mr. Russell or Mr. Lemon have the skills to remove “the splinter” from each others eyes let alone the rest of us. Oftentimes we humans get a little money, influence, power and access and then we start to believe the “hipe” that is placed upon us by the “bottom-line” mainstream media, rather than strive to have a ‘discerning spirit’ and ‘humility’ for the blessing we receive to help others, we fall for the temptations that causes us to become fools and puppets for selfish interest. Everyone of us have the ability to “do better” if we put our minds to it and perservere, the problem is we allow ourselves to be distracted by the successes of others who often fall victim to their own vanity and self importance. Just a thought.

  16. Rev. George Brooks

Both Russell Simmons and Don Lemon are lapdogs to Jews, who have forever been using black people for their own benefit, and don’t care about us, as Michal Jackson finally found out. Michael called them “leeches,” which is absolutely correct. And Lemon is kissing them where the sun don’t shine, as the old saying goes to keep his job at CNN, and has a Jew boy fo his mate. And Simmons is tied up with them in the entertainment industry, and the Jew banks, where he makes money for them and himself with that sky-high credit card of his. I he also has a Jew boy as his political director, who was recently hosting a program that involved several members of the Congressional Black Caucus, which the members should have not participated in. So Lemon and Simmons are sellouts, and blacks should not respect nor pay any attention to either of them. — Rev. George Brooks

  17. “When you measure a man, you got to measure him right.” Sage words from Lorraine Hansberry
Bill O’Reilly is underwritten to stir up vitriol among small-minded viewers. Russell Simmons and Don Lemon are ‘talking heads’ in the media-sphere, under contract to grab your consumer dollars or take up your time ranting at ‘your brothers’ stewing in the same “crab boil,” while
O’Reilly feeds his addictions and is laughing all the way to the bank!
“When you measure a man, you got to measure him right.”
‘Youth is wasted on the young!’

  18. Lorraine Hansberry said it best in ‘A Raisin in the Sun”: “When you measure a man, you got to measure him right.”
Bill O’Reilly is propped-up and paid well to banter to constituents and divide his naysayers. Don Lemon and Russell Simmons are under contract to fulfill duties of employment as media personalities, to advertise to a black consumer base. All three ‘talking heads’ are proven successful, if viewer ratings are at quota or beyond market expectations.
Bill O’Reilly turns out the winner for stirring the pot and leaving ‘young brothers’ to boil in their own stew.”When you measure a man, you got to measure him right.”
“Youth is wasted on the young!”

  19. Has Willey Lynch said, keep them divided and you will control them for five hundred years. An old saying “A house divided against itself will fall”

    One Love!!!!

  20. You are absolutely correct, Russell Simmons, had the mike. He had a tv show and all he showed on his show was black people “acting a fool.”

  21. Thank you Russell Simmons.

  22. Russell Simmons is correct and put Don Lemon in his place. As some critic suggested, because he does not live in the hood with guns and violence and he dates biracial or white women, RS has lost his pulse on the plight of black people and Black concerns; he has not lost his pulse on the plight of Black folk in the least. He and his also successful brothers, artist & entrepreneur Danny and Rev Run, grew up in a middle class area of Queens in NYC where at the time drugs came in big time because the dealers knew that there was more disposable income. And, with drugs come guns and violence.
However they achieved their successes, either through their parents support & love & encouragement and good common sense, they did well for themselves and moved on. We all do not have to live in the hood to understand what happens. Don Lemon knows this as well and he is probably trying to be edgy and keep the discussion going because that is what CNN wants. If you’ve noticed, the CNN got ride of some of their best contributors, Roland Martin, T J Holmes and Soledad O’Brian.

  23. I feel that Don Lemon nor Russell Simmons care about black people. Russell can’t lecture Don. He is Don.

  24. I truly appreciate Simmons pointing out the bigger picture which Lemon failed to do. But its really hard to take Simmons seriously when he dates little white girls young enough to be his daughter and takes advantage of the urban community by pimping out those wack Rush cards (among other things).

  25. Simmons is a fool….none of that crap he said, would stop the black gangs and drug dealers, from murdering innocent black people in Chicago and Detroit….we don’t need his sweet letters…we need the Marine with AK-47’s, to go into these horrible hoods, and clean out the black gangs and drug dealers….once that is done, and decent blacks can live peacefully, THEN we address his letter of sweet nothings…..Simmons don’t live in a hood where black gangs can take pot shots at him….he is a multimillionaire that dates multicolored models………

    • I wonder if those Marine with AK-47′s would have worked against whites who supported lynching, Jim Crow, police brutality and discrimination for so many centuries. Would the Marine with AK-47′s work with a white racist law enforcement and crinal justice system?? That way we could have live peacefully with “decent” whites. Strange how violent solutions are always recommended to cure what’s wrong with some blacks but not whites.

  26. “there are millions of us who are trapped in poverty by design”
Ture, with a college degree jobs have been denied to me that I don’t have good communication skills in this slave language. Chinese who speak english worse than me got hired because the system doesn’t stereotype them as it does to us.

  27. In one arrogant self-righteous ear & out the other…. Aww well back to the CNN card punch… Better yet it be interesting to know if Lemon took part in any mentorship programs regardless the gender preference … while he’s enlisted in O’Reily’s supremacy ” War against the Rap Culture”… What’s his contribution, critic?, parasite?, bridge burning?…

  28. Tell’em Russell

  29. Why would he want kids to grow up to be like this loser. I’m 36 in my younger years I wanted to be like don lemon but now that I see in order to do so I have to be a uncle tom no thanks. Black entertainers and those on television are not there to speak for us or help us there puppets used to brain wash us into thinking this American dream is really obtained for the majority of our race and it isn’t. This uncle toms also come out to try to calm us down when we are angry enough to start a riot. For every house negro on t.v there are millions of us who are trapped in poverty by design. He isn’t anything you would want to become he is puppet who will die letting someone else pull his strings instead of making his own decisions.

    • Humm, check your thinking, Mr. Simmons was talking about Don’s level of education, status, and the opportunity to play a big role in leadership of his own people. You should never speak so negative about a people you know little about or know nothing about their everyday struggle.

      • That sentence could mean different things to different people and sure he had a chance to be a positive role model and he failed there is no turn back after his statements. And 99 percent do can you name any black face in high placed that ate their own me and women. Not many.

    • I must ask you – do you feel that everyone Black who decides on a career in entertainment is a puppet? I want to understand exactly where you’re coming from. Also, I was thinking that when Russell said he wants kids to grow up to be like Don Lemon he meant “successful”. I’m responding to your post because I found what you wrote interesting.

      • They may want to help but there not allowed to once they become famous or suffer the consequences. Watch the FBI war on tupac and black leaders; he had strong ties to the panther organization and many attempts were made on his life by the powers that be because it. Outside of hand full of blacks they dissociate themselves from us and stand silent and watch their people being mistreated. Look at trayvon martin outside of jay and Beyonce who really stood up for him. You notice how quiet the conscious rappers were. I asked chuck d to help start nation wide boycott and he or someone that work for him sent me back a twit laughing.

  30. Why did this article feel the need to tell us that Don Lemon parenthetically is a (homosexual)…?

    • ‘cuz he is… he’s out now right? What’s the problem?

    • @AB. To me it is relevant to point out he’s a homosexual preaching about personal responsibility and morality. Lemon had a smug self righteous moral tone to his co-signing of bigot and racist Bill O’Reilly remarks. O’Reilly along with many Americans would look at Don Lemons anything goes homosexual alternative lifestyle as a another example of the breakdown of moral values in America. You don’t have to wear saggy pants or use the n word to contribute to the moral decay of society. I can’t help to think that if a white gay man like Lemon’s colleague CNN’s Anderson Cooper were to speak up on the lack of personal responsibility and morality of the WHITE poor he would be laughed off the air. A white gay man no matter how accomplished would have ZERO credibility wagging his finger at impoverished whites in the minds of white America. An openly white homosexual wouldn’t be viewed by white America as someone who has the moral high ground to critize, judge or make blanket statements about white people’s bad behavior. Let alone hold himself up as a role model and possible mentor to young children.

  31. Well “Uncle Rush”, l have Not read the entire letter, but this that l Have Read, I—Like.

  32. Thank you Mr Simmons for put him in has place . God Bless

  33. I meant..A person who does not know there history is like a tree with no roots, it can’t grow.
