What's Happening In Your World
Some are openly speculating as to whether or not there will be a backlash to the release of the new film, “Django Unchained” as a result of the recent killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.  One reason that some think there could be a public backlash is because one of the film’s stars, Samuel L. Jackson, feels that gun control is not necessary, in spite of what happened to those kids. “I don’t think it’s about more gun control,” Jackson said in an  interview with the L os Angeles Times . “I grew up in the South with guns everywhere and we never shot anyone. This [shooting] is about people who aren’t taught the value of life.” Jackson seems to believe that with good parents teaching their kids not to go out and kill people, it doesn’t matter if there are assault weapons available on on living room mantle.  Jackson’s assertion that no one was killed in the south during his day is contradicted by the reputation of the south as a place where black people were killed on a regular basis.  Also, the weapons of today are not the weapons of yesterday:  Jackson’s not a young man. Jackson stars in the new film, “Django Unchained,” alongside Kerry Washington and Jamie Foxx.   The film has already received five Golden Globe nominations, but Jackson’s words could cause controversy in a country that is growing sick of gun violence. The film’s studio, The Weinstein Company, released this statement after canceling the premier right after the Connecticut shootings: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the tragedy in Newtown, CT and in this time of national mourning we have decided to forgo our scheduled event,” a spokesperson for The Weinstein Company said in a statement. ”However, we will be holding a private screening for the cast and crew and their friends and families.” Jamie Foxx doesn’t agree with Jackson at all and says that we have a responsibility to address such matters as a society. “We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn’t have a sort of influence,”  Foxx said to the Associated Press . “It does.”

Samuel L. Jackson and Jamie Foxx Don’t See Eye-to-Eye on Sandy Hook

  1. I agree with you sam jackson, changing gun laws will not prevent this. People get over it, yeah its sad its happen but it did.. The world, the media or the president would not be speaking out so much on this if it was all black kids who got killed.. SO PEOPLE STOP IT! WE ALL KNOW THIS CONVERSATION IS TAKENING PLACE BECAUSE IT WAS A BUNCH OF WHITE KIDS WHO GOT KILLED! BOOO WHOOO

  2. I HAVE THE SAME VIEWS AS SAM JACK…..I GREW UP IN THE ROUGHEST NEIGHBOR HOOD IN PHILLY….WITH CRAZY PEOPLE WHO HAD GUNS….AND NONE OF THEM SHOT UP A SCHOOL….ITS WHITE FOLK THAT GOES BIZERK…LOOK AT THE BIG PICTUREa

  4. The problem is not guns, it is a culture problem. American European culture is a violent culture. So Americans are good at denying things, just as they deny the atrocities of slavery that have negatively affect the captives and the captured as a result of American chattle slavery, rape in America, male domination of females in America, racial predudice, the lies of American and world history etc.

  14. We as black people need to separate the violence in our community from the issue of control. Gun control will not stop violence in the black community because those weapons are generally not legal anyhow.

Historically it was blacks who were not allowed to own weapons. Whites would not sell a black person a gun so we should be last ones concerned about gun legislation.

Obvious, the issue of assault weapons is of concern but it may be water under the bridge now because there are so many already out there.

  15. Couldn’t disagree more with Samuel L. While possessing firearms is one thing, possessing assault weapons is a totally different thing. They’re called assault weapons for a reason; their purpose is to assault, normally human beings. I simply can’t fathom the reason to have these types of arms available for common consumption. Just because the Constitution gives us the right to bear arms doesn’t mean we have to do it. What purpose does it serve, besides creating large profits for gun manufacturers. Just look at the correlation between those who own firearms and the resultant violence on themselves or loved ones. That pretty much says it all. Change the gun laws now.

  16. Kimberly DefinitelyBlessesd Weathers

Why oh why is it so hard to get Sudifed and other OTC medications than it is to get a gun? Why do they bother with drivers first studying to obtain a driver’s permit then driver’s license to drive a car that in the wrong hands is a weapon, but not a fire arm? It seems that somehow we (Americans) have gotten our priorities confused. They have taken my favorite drain cleaner of the market because it’s an “active ingredient” in the making of meth, but gun availability seems to be effortless?

  17. You can't ban your way out of gun violence. Knives, bottles, baseball bats and cars also kill. Are we going to ban everything that can kill? The problem is us and due to our own negligence. How many of you here are active in your community? Do you try and do anything to prevent it or just talk after it happens? Do you attended your children's parent teacher conferences? Do you turn your backs on other children because your child has? Do you follow and teach your kids about God's commandments? Everybody talks but only after an incident. You only get what you pay for, remember?

  18. I disagree.. Guns are not the issue. Guns are only the tools used in a culture that glorifies this behavior in a back door way. If rape was the issue would we say that the raper or women wearing short shirts would be the problem. We have to change the behavior and enforce the law we already have. Most laws are written for one prevent of the people… We have to stop punishing the 99%.

  19. Agreed, whole nheaartedly Agreed with Samuel L.

  20. it's not about parenting its a war going on , a spiritual war and there's all kind of spirits , evil and good and which ever one gots control over you is what you're going to be about. that guy that killed those kids had a evil kill spirit that took over him. all I can say is stay prayed up. it's not in the parents hand. feel me?

  21. I am confused about why we as americans cannot accept that there may be many different things happen when looking at gun violence and that one coorelating factor may or may not cotribute to the other. That being said they are all important. Do we have too many guns? Yes. Are they all going away? No Samuel did make a point that I stongly agree with and that I think we need to consider going forward. This one young man was reportedly suspected of having a Type II disorder which is a character disorder (personality). Anti social, Narrcistic you get the point. People who see and are taught that they are the center of the earth and never challenged are not concerned about the well being of other people. There is a book titled "Narcism living in the world of entitlement" That I think all people should read. The level of mean spiritedness and vitriol in people makes for a festering hate soup that has been brewing for some time. Now throw in an AR 15 with a 30 round clip and we see people taking out thier mal adjusted views on the world. And this is only going to get worse! There is no conicidence that these perpetrators of mass shootings are usually white males ( I am only discussing mass killings) because this fear, hatred, nastalgia of a changing america is scary to them. When you are taught "take my country back" "Get guns Obama is coming for your guns" "He is muslim" on and on and on this message just adds to that stew. We would be well advised to look at research about gun violence and the increase in it as we have more guns and follow the example of countires like Japan that have decreased gun violence! This is a complicated issue that I fear will only get worse.

  22. Sam's comment is a contradiction and not applicable to these times not 50 years ago. If the issue is people not being taught the value of life, and there are weapons of mass destruction at their disposal, in a modern society of glorified violence… Well the math speaks for itself

  23. Growing up in the south I was taught respect for firearms. I wouldnt dare touch my mother's gun. She raised me that way. I'm with Samuel. The people committing the crimes r goig t get guns regardless. ….. like they care about gun laws. Raise a child in the way they should go. Individual responsibility.

  24. I’m 1000% in agreement with Samuel Jackson. If parent aren’t doing their jobs to fully nurture and instill a sense of reverence for life, then we shouldn’t be surprised that more incidents like the Newtown shooting begin to happen. Really, all we need to do is to look at the shootings that occur in Chicago, Illinois on a weekly basis to see what happens when there is no respect for life.

  25. I totally agree with Samuel L Jackson we should teach our children the value of life. Guns don't kill people it's people who have a lack of human life kills people. Gun control laws are just a band aide to a more deeper problem.

  26. We don't need gun control we need GOD control.

  27. I do not agree or disagree with Jackson. People Aim guns then they kill. The greater problem we face in this Country is mental illness. Caring for the People of America, not focus on gun makers. Assualt weapons should not be part of a household to protect the family. They should not be sold for household safety. Why would a protecter of a house want to kill numerous people, guns are and were used to protect the home, the family, things have changed, but an assualt weapon for home protection should be a violation of the law. Open up facilities in hospitals, county, government owned and operated mental health facilities. People suffering from depression, anexity, and other social disorder are not being treated in a hospital atmosphere, they are given medication they don’t take at all or they take when they feel like it. We need more mental health facilities and more trained serious mental heatlh professionals to care for them. We have closed numerous mental health facilities private and public because they are not cost effective. One hospital – University of Colorado Hospital, Aurora, CO, were most of the victims as well as the criminal sought help after the shooting closed their mental health floor because it was not cost effective. The shooter was being treated at this hospital who killed and wounded numerous people. My brother was a patient at the hospital when this happen, he suffers from mental illness, although functioning in society (lives with me in California) the hospital staff had no clue what to do with him after treating him for his physical condition. He stayed on the 6th floor which use to be the mental health ward for 60 days refused to leave and the staff, doctors, psyc nurses, did not know what to do with him. It is sad, that we can go all over the world to help people and cannot help our own right here in the United States of America. When the mentally ill kill numerous people then we say lets focus on mentally ill. Guns are bad, but without people the guns would be useless. We need very strict gun control, but it was not the cause in fact of the killings.

  29. As Rosmarry points out , this is about assault weapons. There is little argument that if not for the NRA they would be banned. I agree with Samuuel about the value in teaching kids living skills, ethics, values , respect for your fellow man. These teachings have to be part of a schools curriculm. Its not about religion, but about spirituality, meaning that we are all God’s children, making no one better than anyone else, and if God is love, what else is it.

  31. I don’t think when Mr.Jackson was growing up his parents had assault weapons on the mantle which is what this whole thing is about I agree that it is humans who are committing these hideous crimes but at the same time it is the guns that they are using to do committ mass murders. These weapons should be banned period and at best so many lives are not lost at one time a life is a life wheather it is one or many maybe if such a tradgey like this affected him in a personal way he would reconsider his thinking

    • Thanks Rosemary. You said it all. The South was not displaying Assault weapons that are used on humans for the sole purpose of murder. Period. I’m sick of how white folk cover themselves. We don’t know all there is about the parents at all! Why is that? If Adam was so mentally ill or whatever, how come 12 years in the classroom, no teacher caught it? He functioned and had jobs, and good grades. If he were black would we be having these psychological discussions?

  32. This whole Nation is a war zone. Samuel L Jackson is right. We as Black People just need to get a hold of the well being of yourself and control our communities and stop teaching our people to stop hating each other. Also Black Men need stop shedding tears over White people. Also we need to stop protecting Whites around the world and focus on our people, nations and resources. Our People need to know when to pick a weapon up, and when use their mind and work things out. And sometimes just walk away. But everybody is going to need to know how to use a gun shortly, within a very few years. The Civil War of the 1860’s in going to look like child’s play as to what’s coming.

  33. People seem to mis the mark. America is a voilent society. We promote voilence in just about everything we do. If you watch football, there is voilemce, if you watch boxing there is voilence. Again I say, our main industry is building weaponry to sell to the rest of the world to kill each other with. We used them against those that we do not like, and even those we claim we like if they do not do what we want them to do.
We need to stop the bull crap, and look at ourselves, and accept who we are and what we are. Stop spreading this nonsence that we are peace loving people. If we were peace loving then why do we kill so many people?. If we were peace loving people we would not have a dime, because we would not be selling arms to the rest of the world so they can kill each other.
It seem the only time we care or pay attention to voilence is when it happen to us, as long as it is somebody else we could not care less.

  34. PEOPLE THAT MAKE EXCELLENT POINT OF VIEWS ARE PEOPLE THAT JUDGE THE
CIRCUMSTANCE FROM MORE THAN ONE ANGLE,AND TAKE TIME OUT TO
MEDITATE IN ORDER TO TURN OVER EVERY STONE TO FIND AN ANSWER
THATS APPROPRIATE.AMERICA IS MESSED UP BECAUSE OUR LEADERS HAVE
MADE DECISIONS THAT HAS BEEN SELFISH,ONESIDED,NOT WELL THOUGHT
OUT FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE PEOPLE.FREESTYLE DECISIONS,POINT OF VIEWS ARE HISTORICALLY DESTRUCTIVE.WHEN PEOPLE LIKE JAMIE AND SAMUEL HAVE NOT FOUND A WAY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS IN THER PAST COMMUNITIES,I THINK IT IS HYPOCRITAL OF THEM TO MAKE A POINT OF
VIEW CONSIDERING THE PROBLEMS IN THE BLAC RACE,AND THEIR
INFLUENCE THAT CAN HAVE A NEGATIVE,OR POSITIVE IMPACT UPON THE
BLACK COMMUNITY IF USED ON A PARTICULAR FORMAT.

  35. I grew up around killers and dealers, I listened to EVERYTHING from N.W.A. to Gangstarr. I never been to prison and I have a clean police record…WHY? BECAUSE I HAD PARENTS that taught me to pray and GOD is the only one who can give or take a life.

  36. As long as I continue to breath our precious air, I will never understand humans. Does anyone truly believe legislation and stricter gun laws will stop the killings in our schools? I am 100% onboard to arm the teachers, supporting staff, principals and/or any other staff member who wants to; and qualifies to handle a firearm. It’s a controversial fact people kill people. Guns don’t kill people. Where the attention should be directed at is the availability of graphically bloody videos and the degrading and disrespectful music that is totally dominating the thought process of our young people. Guns have been around for centuries. In the history of America, does anyone recall methodical shootings in our schools? There is a direct relationship between the bloody videos and the brainwashing lyrics that is influencing the impressionables minds of our young people. FOLKS, YOU ARE BARKING UP THE WRONG VOLCANO THAT IS SIZZLING TO ERUPT!

  37. plain and simple the laws are to soft they need a law were if you get caught with an elegal weapon you get 25 with no possibility of parole but at the same time that don't mean shit most of these killings are made by people that are ready to die and that you can not controll.

  38. I’ve been exposed to firearms all my life. My Uncle and Grandfather taught me how to shoot beginning with .177 pellet pistols and moving on to 30.06 rifles and .45 caliber pistols. I continued to learn about firearms while at Morgan State Uiversity taking Archery & Riflery and in the ROTC program, and then serving 13 years in the US Army. In all that time i never once had to intent to maliciously use a firearm outside training, a mission, or other than in the commission of official duties. Both of my daughters have the basic knowledge of firearms as does my wife. I am a certified NRA Basic Rifle Instructor and a NRA member. This issue is one of basic common sense, learned and observed behavior, and valuing life, human and otherwise. Samuel Jackson is 100% correct. Look at the object lesson of the genocide of Rwanda: 600k people masscred in less than 7 months and the majority so murdered at the end of a machete or parang! At the end of the day the issue is not firearm or weapon, but the attitude of the people who would use it.

  39. The movie and their views have nothing to do with one another. That's like saying if a meteor drops to the earth it must be a transformer. No correlation whatsoever.

  40. I agree with Sam Jackson. I grew up and never once wanted to shoot or kill anyone. Even if the thought was there my parents taught me to deal with my anger in other ways other than kill someone or innocent persons not involved.

    It is all about parenting.

  41. I agree with Samuel L. Jackson on this, we need to let them know that those who are about senseless shootings and killings even if it's with a pistol, there are consequences for their actions, like getting burned up while they are sleep in their cell.

    • I disagree with Samuel. We glorify violence. We are addicted to it. Until we address this addiction in our laws and prrsonal attitudes, the senseless killing will continue.

    • I to disagree Samuel, He is talking 40 to 50 years ago. Times have changed, home environment. teaching of guns and there use your moves are full of violent acts which parents have control but don't because they are to busy doing there own thing.

    • Edye Deloch-Hughes I agree with you that America loves this kind of stuff "God father gangster movies, Western movies. We will never ban having guns And if anyone wants to get rid of there working gun I'll take it off there hands. I don't have a solution to stop the killings If I did I would start in Chitown first Installing a stronger believe in God I know would help stem a-lot of this violence we see on a daily base

    • If this is true then you cannot blame the children… Our only choice is to blame us the parents… Remember we are not the first parents on earth… All of us learned from our parents, however, some of us choose to ignore those teachings and now we don not know how to teach our children… Notwithstanding, some of our parents do not deserve following!!!! Like the mother in Newtown, CT who knew that her child had mental problems, however, choosed to expose him to gunssssss, and to his baby sitter not to turn his back on he son!!!! I am not say that I need a gun that shoots 30-40 rounds a minute, but I want to own a gun…

  42. I personally don't believe we need more regulations,if it weren't guns it'd be bombs. When someone has made up their mind to do something like this its hard to expect whats next. We all need to take the time to mentor our young people and not subjugate our public schools to politics when they need money to function.

    • Teemo I agree because if not guns or bombs it's stabbings, etc. A nine yr old was stabbed in Nwk recently and no one is coming forward erego another senseless crime via violence. We have to start in the homes back to the old school traditional parenting. Bringing prayer and a mission of vision and values – teaching character, integrity and self love in the schools. Nowadays there are also so many in law enforcement as well as politics involved with either concealing if not participatining in violent acts and behaviors. I lost my only brother to gun violence, black on black crime and most importantly senseless.

    • Jaime Andres Pretell

A killer is a killer, true. But a killer with a gun or a knife cannot do the same amount of killing than a person with an assault rifle.

  43. The debate surrounding the Sandy Hook mass shooting is avoiding the reality that cultural influences — whether gratuitous sex and violence, rampant drug use, and media that feeds any violent fantasy — cumulatively contribute to a dangerous cocktail that explodes into too many deaths. The single most volatile ingredient that accelerates the body count is a gun — on the streets of urban America, in the hands of disturbed individuals, or in the homes of well-meaning gun owners. If we cannot eliminate personal weapons for protection and hunting, we ought to have the good sense to remove weapons of war from the equation. Perhaps we will remove the word "mass" from the senseless murders that occur all too often.

    • Crazie Flawed Narcissistic-VampDoll

I disagree. Art imitates life, not the other way around. And how do u suggest the elimination of weapons of war from the equation? And if u are just looking to have a debate, let's take it deeper and eliminate violence from the hearts of man first, mental issues second….and not to be picky but one senseless murder is bad enough regardless if the word MASS is in front or not.

  44. I totally agree with Samuel L. Jackson on this.

  45. I'm with Samuel L. on this one.

  46. I'm for armed teachers. I know people will say what is the teacher if the teacher losses it. Well have teachers get a special credential.

  47. How many shootings have occured in police precincts. Very few, and probably because they are armed.

    • These guys today don't have much respect for the police. They are set on doing what they have to do regardless of the police or someone armed. It's who gets their gun out first.

    • Michael research shows us that more guns equals more violence! and to make a quick point. Colubine had armed guards, Virginia Tech has its own police force, Fort Hood is a Military base. Also How many mass killings have ever been stopped my armed civilians….let me help you none!

  48. Leontyne Clay Peck

This country has a history of violent psychopaths.
