What's Happening In Your World
President Barack Obama is under increased pressure to respond to the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.  The nation is now finding that it’s patience for the lack of gun control in America is starting to wear thin.  Both Democrats and Republicans have danced around the issue of controlling guns and assault rifles that are readily available on the streets, but the country has decided that witnessing the death of 20 young children may be a price that is too great to pay. Prominent politicians including New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg are saying that the president must address the gun control issue and can not skirt the matter any longer.   Senate majority leader Harry Reid is one of the first to speak to the issue and is now saying that all options are on the table. “I believe part of that healing process will require Congress to examine what can be done to prevent more tragedies like the ones in Newtown, Conn.; Aurora, Colo.; Oak Creek, Wis.; and Portland, Ore.,” Reid said. “As President Obama said last night, no one law can erase evil. No policy can prevent a determined madman from committing a senseless act of violence,” he said. “But we need to accept the reality that we are not doing enough to protect our citizens. Reid continued to speak to the issue, stating that the country must engage and decisive action if it is to avoid similar tragedies in the future.  He also notes that we as a nation have our greatest responsibility to protect those who are most vulnerable. “In the coming days and weeks, we will engage in a meaningful conversation and thoughtful debate about how to change laws and culture that allow violence to grow,” Reid said. “We have no greater responsibility than keeping our most vulnerable and most precious resource — our children — safe. And every idea should be on the table as we discuss how best to do just that.” One of the most interesting things about American politicians Is that they tend to become bellwethers of public opinion.   In this particular case, almost no action on behalf of the gun lobby is suitable two minimize the collective anger of the American people. While the deaths of these young children were quite painful to watch, it seems that for the first time in quite a while, stagnant politicians are willing to take a stand to protect the people that they represent.
