What's Happening In Your World
In an anticipated move, Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy, has resigned from his position pending a successor being hired. Chu won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for his work in physics and science. He is also the former director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. When Chu moved into the political hustle and bustle in Washington, he didn’t seem too comfortable with the position, which is why this announcement has been waiting in the wings. During his career, Chu tried to make the country a more ‘green’ place to live. He ended up loaning $528 million to a company that was called Solyndra, a solar panel company. Solyndra went bankrupt which caused the GOP to fire on Chu for the mistake in judgment. Chu was a person who cared about the environment and where it was headed in the future. He was very interested in gaining ground on solar energy, wind powered energy, and renewable energy. Pollution is a huge problem these days and these different ‘green’ ways of living would certainly help us keep the planet alive and well. There have been a few people that have been named as possible successors for Chu’s position. The successors  include Byron Dorgan. who is the former senator for North Dakota, Bill Ritter who is the former governor of Colorado, Tom Steyer who is the head of one of the world’s largest hedge funds, and finally Steve Westley, a venture capitalist that looks for new ways for the country to be green and focuses on renewable energy. None of these people have officially been named as the successor as of yet. Chu hopes to be out by the end of February but said that he will stay until there is another person in place for the job.
