What's Happening In Your World
by Dr. Boyce Watkins Some are up in arms over Cornel West and his most recent critique of the Obama Administration.  During the Smiley and West radio show this week, Professor West asked if Barack Obama and other Washington politicians would be so sensitive to gun violence were it not for the fact that the Sandy Hook kids were white.  Here is part of what Dr. West had to say: “They’re either cowards or hypocrites when it comes to this issue of our precious children. By cowards I mean they care but they don’t have the courage to move forward and act. Or they’re hypocrites which is to say they say they care but deep down they don’t care especially when it relates to South Side of Chicago, Harlem, children across the board…” Of course Dr. West’s remarks were met with the standard cries of “hater” that somehow became a significant part of black political discourse over the last four years.  Personally, I think the term should be banned for anyone who expects to be taken seriously.   Using the term “hater” to describe every person who critiques your hero effectively turns you into nothing but a simple-minded cheerleader who follows the crowd.  We need more leaders in the black community, not followers.   The ironic thing about those who attack Cornel for asking our politicians to do more for black people is that the attacks are reflective of the collective self-esteem problem that many of us have had since slavery.   Somehow, we were convinced long ago that when a black man gets “a big important job” in the White House, he is somehow too important to be concerned with petty issues like the deaths of black babies, families who can’t afford to eat or millions of black people unjustly trapped in the criminal justice system.  I beg to differ. The challenge to those who want to call Cornel West a hater is simple:  If he’s wrong, then PROVE IT.  Show documented evidence that the Obama Administration would be or has been equally responsive to the deaths of black children as they are to white ones.  For every child who died at Sandy Hook last week, there are at least 10 children who’ve died in the south side of Chicago over the past three years. So, anyone who believes that there has been parity in the administrative response to gun violence is as delusional as any card-carrying member of the KKK. Someone recently asked me, “Where were Cornel and his criticism during the Clinton and Bush administrations?”   I responded, “He was right where he is right now.  But people expected him to change his tune because there was a black man in office.  Also, people didn’t start listening until we got a president that everyone felt black people should unanimously support without ever questioning his leadership.” Dr. West has been incredibly consistent when advocating for poor, black and brown people in America.  What also remain consistent are the forces of oppression coming from those who don’t feel that the preservation of black life is worth any significant investment of political capital.   Had Barack Obama been president during the civil war, the slaves would never have been freed, largely because Abraham Lincoln had to take serious political risks in order to secure passage of the 13 th amendment.  I have yet to see any example in which the Obama Administration has taken an equivalent risk on behalf of black people.  In that regard, Cornel could be right about the president’s cowardice, at least when it comes to people who look like his wife, Michelle. Attacking Cornel West, calling him a hater, and saying that you want him quiet is the easy way out.  The natural corollary for such an attack on Cornel is to somehow presume that the beloved figures in the Obama Administration are doing all they can to support the black community.  To date, the evidence is simply lacking. If you want to shut down the critique of Cornel West, then PROVE-HIM-WRONG.  If you can’t do that, then you don’t have a leg to stand on. Hispanic elected officials don't beat around the bush as to who, or whom they represent. In contrast, President Barack Obama and/or other no good elected black leaders betray the black community every day he or she trashes the Constitution and the "oath of office".

Indeed Cornel West…the message that you bring has merit, i.e., "Why blame the messenger, when the message holds validity as it concerns Barack Obama and/or other elected black leaders who disgrace the office.

Now if you don’t place value in the Constitution, the “oath of office”, the essence of what it means to be a U.S. citizen, that is on you, that is your shortcoming or ignorance.

I commend you, Marvin Stewart, former Board Director of the Minuteman Project and other Minutemen, for your understanding of a most important function of all elected officials and the duty of elected officials to respect the Constitution and his or her oath of office when serving U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.

“….First of all I don’t think anyone here is asking for a hand-out from the government, least that's not what I’m getting from this forum.”-Truthbeliever.

As other individuals have stated, which is also true, because no one here is asking President Barack Obama for handouts, or asking Barack Obama to take care of their families or their children.

Many individuals are in fact demanding that Barack Obama respect the “oath of office”, the Constitution, and since a large segment of the black electorate has enabled Barack Obama to be President, it is not too much to demand that Barack Obama step up to plate to serve the black community as well.

President Barack Obama just like any other elected official is under oath. Individuals who pay Federal taxes, property taxes, income taxes, etc., etc., are not going sit quietly by the sidelines like you, when his or her taxes dollars finance and pay the salaries of no good elected officials, no matter what ethnic group, religious belief, gender, and/or heritage of the elected official.

Furthermore many U.S. born black men and women, and other individuals, have served this nation honorably in every war, from the American Revolutionary War, to the conflict in Afghanistan, have returned in body bags, are maimed for life, and/or those who have returned have made this great sacrifice and will not sit quietly by the sidelines while elected officials like no good Barack Obama trash the “oath of office”, the Constitution, circumvent the Constitution to provide amnesty for illegal immigrants, ignore valid written or spoken petitions for redress, and the essence of what it means to be an elected official.

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”.

“There are cases where an individual has been wrongfully treated by his government and about the only way, unless the individual resorts to court, and even in some cases the courts are not able to give proper relief, the only area or avenue open to the individual is through his representative. When you find a bona fide error has been made, I suggest that you make a maximum effort to remedy it. This I feel is a vital and important function of those of us in the House of Representatives”.

(The above excerpt “The Job of the Congressman” holds true for all elected officials).

Oath of Office: “I, (President, Supreme Court Justice, Congressperson, Assemblyman, County Board of Supervisor’s Member, Mayor, City Councilperson, Judge, ), during such times as I hold the office, I, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States (the Constitution of the State of California, Maryland, Illinois, etc., etc.), against all enemies foreign (terrorist enemies of the U.S., illegal immigrants, un-American or un-Constitutional anything and everything, etc.) and domestic (treasonous individuals or organizations, any Police Chief who condones this and the Police Chief’s rogue police officers, unethical or criminal elected officials or public servants, illegal aliens or his or her advocates, un-American anything and everything), and that I will bear true faith and allegiance, to the Constitution of the United States , (State Constitution), and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter.”.

No matter what President Barack “the Magic Negro-Bootlicking Illegal Alien” Obama thinks or says, there is no getting around the fact that he and all other elected officials are still under oath to serve all U.S. citizens and legal immigrants, U.S. born descendants of slavery being inclusive.

“A conversation between President Obama and the black community” Published on Jun 7, 2012 by drboycewatkins.

It makes no sense pertaining to why any U.S. born black elected official would promote Amnesty/the Dream Act, when communities of U.S. born descendants of slavery are being displaced by illegal aliens from around the world.

I’m one of numerous U.S. born black descendants of slavery who with good reason has contempt for Barack Obama and other pseudo leaders like him.

  2. @Olivette. There are many but one book which I am currently reading is How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, written by an African Scholar who was assassinated by europeans and betrayed by his so called friend yet another example of how european used or coerced other Africans to betray their own for a few “dollars” or position, sound familiar?
We are making this film too contraversial but it is not different from any other film that gives us anesthesia to cope with how they continue to keep us dependent of them while saying we are lazy and dont want to work or do for self. The new buzz work in employment is that we dont have the skill base to do the jobs they currently have; Sound familiar?
How long will we feel good and fuzzy because we are seen in a movie kick the hell out of white people. The true victory is the get off our behinds and support black business and join a black organization so that we depend on ourselves and demand the kind of movies we really want to see, movies that will raise our consciousess and lead us towards true independance, Not these damn fairy tales about psuedo liberation. In fact the film maker had to easy white peoples mind that we dont go postal because of it. But it is a pussy cat film and my suspect is a sterile account of the slavery question. Who gives a damn that you or your great grand daddy wasnt directly involved in this trade, so many of you are benefactors of it and are taught to have no conscious about. In fact, Africans are taught that we are the cause of our own demise. Some truth to it but who are the architects of the deception. That is what we have to realize.

  3. Dr. Cornel West is dead on it, my opinion.

  4. I disagree deeply. It hurts because we have a black President that can't help black people, true enough. However, he is so criticized if he helps his own yet white Presidents have been doing this since there was ever a Presidency title. What truly breaks my heart, on a deeper level, is the lack of true support from our wealthy black athletes and entertainers. These people have the money to stand behind things such as gun control, education, etc. instead you have idiots like Nicki Minaj who endorse Mitt Romney…how dumb was that. That you folk like JayZ, Beyonce, Oprah, and many others who can say we got the salary for 100 extra officers per year for 5 years in these really rough cities like NYC, Chicago, and Arkansas (because LA crime is the lowest in years now). They could also hire more teachers or get behind these beacon afterschool programs so little one interested in homework and being safe and who need a hot meal before they do they're homework or go homework b/c parents are working 2nd or 3rd shift or both can have the safety net. The money some of these folk have they nor their children nor their children's children would spend this money it's so much and will continue to earn interest. This creates jobs thus boosting the Obama credibility, this changes a standard set by music and media that we are not tolerating this b/s in our black communities but they won't because these people are so selfish and holding on to their stuff like they can take it with them when they die or like they will be remembered for how much money they made or had…dummies…you will be remembered for what you did for others with your fame and the money you made. These folk do nothing…the little bit of $1 toys that JayZ and Lady B gave out in Brooklyn the last few Christmas was a hot mess…a teacher told me the kids complained of toys that broke in less than one day. SMH. I heard they gave one school in Brooklyn 30 laptops let's do the math on that, combined these two are almost at billionaire status and they really spent $9,000 proudly and expect to change a world…WOW. I am teacher who makes between $45-55K annually depending on extra funding the schools receive…I tithe 10% to my church, I give to other causes outside the church, I always have a bunch of kids from my community around doing something for them…investing love and activity in them so can aspire higher. Black athletes and entertainer hide behind the "Black Folk Think Their Entitled" commentary to hold on to their money…white people through their money behind white Presidents b/c they want to keep old boy in office and they don't want to hear nothing about a legacy of failure…black folk is a HOT MESS collectively. It's not 100% correct to just call the Obama Administration cowardous or hypocrites without looking at our people as a collective piece of this ugly self hatred struggle for power of any kind puzzle.

  5. Those Who Attack Cornel West….Can They Actually Defend Their Point of View?

No… I havent seen it. Especially on any of these sites..

I see Obama Apologists attacking the messenger..

The 1 thing I would say to Cornel is that he should pull back on terms he uses to describe the president. It hurts the feelings of people who love the president above everything else, even themselves.

The president is serve his masters, so we need to worry about us, not him.

  6. We need to stop blaming external forces, and focus on the home. The teenagers who have guns have mothers/fathers/grandparents/etc. So I think the home life is were all of the self-hatred is coming from, I say self-hatred because in order for you to just aimlessly kill another person of color, you must hate yourself.

  7. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-900269

President Barack Obama, multiple members of the Congressional Black Caucus, other elected black leaders at the State and Local branches of government, U.S Supreme Court Clarence Thomas, etc., etc., have contempt for the sworn oath of office, the Constitution, the rule of law, and the United States of America.

There are truly possible and legal ways to acquire assets from the affluent, a business owner, other individuals, private and public entities who or that violate the Constitutional rights of U.S. citizens and legal immigrants, that could be used for the benefit of the disenfranchised, but this requires respect for the Constitution, the “oath of office”, the rule of law, and “tort practice expertise”

……qualities that the Harvard Graduate President Obama, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, multiple members of the Congressional Black Caucus, other elected black leaders at the State, County, and City jurisdictions of government, fail to uphold as mandated by law and sworn under oath as elected officials or public servants.

  8. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-182700

With all the criminal acts perpetrated against law abiding U.S. born blacks by the criminal actions of police officers, other public servants, it just makes no sense that the black community continues to remain in poverty, begging for worthless demeaning welfare benefits, begging for handouts, etc., etc.

  10. What we need to be talking about is all the guns being used on our kids in the hood. No one talks about this. More young Blacks are killed in a month than those that are killed in these mass shooting. Why are so many guns in our neighborhood? They are there to protect and maintain control over the neighborhoods for sell of their drugs. Drugs is another major problem in our neighborhoods, but no one talks about this. We need to wake up.

  11. Cornel and Tavis should run for office instead of running their mouths. What about ICE CUBE, DR DRE AND ICE CUBE founders of Gangster rapp that has made our communities a WAR ZONE. Now we want the government to save us from ourselves. Please. Obama is not the magic negro with all of the answers. If Cornel and Tavis have the answers, let them bring it forth.

  17. Mr West opinion is not just for Obama its a reflection on most black leadership and the democratic party. He's right would not get the same coverage for black children.

  18. Seems to me that Dr. West has always been able to balance his "head" (intellect).
with his heart , which always seems 'spot ON! He may have a "lover's quarrel" with.
our world, yet he clearly aspires to be JUST where Jesus would be on each issue.
which so deeply affects the quality and substance of our basic lives/needs. I say
HOORAY for the courage that Cornel West offers us as an example – we are all Jesus/Gandhi/Che/Romero/Chavez, and, yes, Dorothy Day and Kathy Kelly! So let us continue to work for all that Dr. King/Malcolm/Jesus/Allah/Buddha et al have shown us and that Cornel West manifests! Too many comments here seem to show how very little some even know of Dr. West's work and way of being! Not perfect, maybe, yet more than 'good enough' for us to learn from! Cheers! Love/peace, e.

  19. I oppose the tactics of West and Smiley. As stated in previous posts, they add no solutions, just complaints and pot stirring. It saddens me to see "crabs in the barrel" nipping sat the heels of the President. Your picture of West shows him shucking and grinning when the President gives him a moment but when he feels slighted he tears down the President and all he is trying to do for the nation. My defense and well made.

    • I agree D.C. Price. Please read my post as well. I am heartbroken at the things I hear about President Obama however no one who can help does anything to promote efficient, effective and affective change n needed communities. Truth be told…if they clean mess up the police won't have jobs, prisons would close and correction officers would lose jobs. It's a hot mess…musicians promote idiotic behavior and these kids believe this stuff because they have nothing else to believe in. SMH

  20. Now that is not right…I am out right mad a child is a child no matter what color they maybe…and no one has the right to use any forms of weapons…to kill no one…Let's speak of that…illegal weapons are banded from all streets in America…let's find out how these illegal weapons are being purchase…. Then let the Government do there job in cleaning up are street and making them safe for everyone….

    • Those whom would sacrifice liberty for temporary security, deserve neither.-Benjamin Franklin
We are not women, and we do not petition the government to save us from ourselves. We are quite capable of self defense, and we do not call 911. There are still some men out here, and we value our Second Amendment rights, and understand the historical context.
      Thus always to tyrants.

    • So, YOU have the unmitigated audacity to tell us that no one has the right to use any forms of weapons. WHY? Because YOU say so….
Who are you? Supreme mastermind of the universe…..
We don't work for you, and we think for ourselves.

    • When people are making money off of illegal guns and they are killing innocent people…there is a job that the government most do…you every watched Get Smart…Mission Imposable.IJS.

  21. THE WORD COWARD IS RIGHT ON POINT!

    • They’re either cowards or hypocrites when it comes to this issue of our precious children. By cowards I mean they care but they don’t have the courage to move forward and act. Or they’re hypocrites which is to say they say they care but deep down they don’t care especially when it relates to South Side of Chicago, Harlem, children across the board…”

  22. Dr. West has a right to his opinion, and I respect that right but it's not what you say it the way you say it. Anyone who clearly understands, this issue knows anything that is done cannot tread on the U.S. Supreme Court case: District of Columbia v. Heller, 128 S. Ct. 645 – 2007 which settled the issue of who has a right to bear arms. Unless the court is asked to reverse itself (and that's not going to happen) Whatever is done must be well thought-out and must be able to pass the constitutional test.

    • Jaime Andres Pretell

Not true. A Congressional amendment can overturn a Supreme Court Ruling. Furthermore. Columbia vs Heller did not address regulations against assault weapons. The Brady Act was in effect till 2009, and the Heller decision did not affect it.

  23. I think Dr. West makes a valid point. Even though the word "Coward" might be too strong. But I think gun control isn't the issue. If some one is going to kill or do acts of violence, they can do it without guns anyway. I would of never thought that you can use airplanes or trucks as weapons. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. So lets take guns away from cops, and the secret service and see how the president and members of congress and senate really feel.
