Yvette Carnell: How Both Rev. Al Sharpton and Michael Eric Dyson Tricked the Black Community

by Yvette Carnell

As a black media consumer who scans mountains of black media stories every day,I have to tell you, I get tired of being lied to. And the two biggest liars by far during President Obama’s first term have been Michael Eric Dyson and “Rev.” Al Sharpton.

In the lead up to the election, when Dr. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley both implored the black electorate to push Obama for a black agenda, both Sharpton and Dyson circled the wagons, insulating the White House from any criticism from the black community, ensuring that Obama would not be held to task, certainly not during his first term.

Presumably, Sharpton and Dyson safeguarded the president to ensure that he’d win reelection. Sharpton gave up on any serious assessment of Obama early, saying he wouldn’t offer any criticism of Obama during his first term. He was rewarded with an MSNBC show.

Dyson, who initially gave a fiery roundtable lecture on how blacks couldn’t allow racial symbolism to trump accountability, recently demonstrated a complete 180 in his debate with Black Agenda Report’s Glen Ford. His reward is coming, I’m sure.

But now there is good evidence that, contrary to the wisdom of Dyson and Sharpton, Obama didn’t need any protecting. He trounced Romney in Tuesday’s election, becoming one of only a handful of presidents to win 50 percent of the popular vote, and leaving me with no other choice than to believe that doing something substantive for black people during his first time wouldn’t have upended Obama’s  election prospects.

The black community could’ve gotten its pound of flesh, much like the LGBT and Latino communities had already, if we’d not been snookered, listening to old “Marble Mouth” Sharpton and “Bee Boppin'” Dyson.

Now we are all left hoping and wishing that, for the sake of his legacy, President Obama doesn’t forget about us during his second term. The smart thing to do would’ve been to secure something, such as legislation to reduce black unemployment or mass incarceration, before the election, but we weren’t smart. We were tribal.

To put it plainly, the black community got screwed by trusting two men who were never honest brokers in the political game they were playing. These men selfishly took advantage of their proximity to power, and successfully used  it as leverage for their personal brands, at the expense of the black community at large.

Listen black people: Nobody cares about us. Not even the people who were hired to care about us care about us. My advice? F*ck ‘em. And I don’t just mean f*ck ‘em right now, I mean f*ck ‘em forever.

Al Sharpton’s nothing more than an old guy with a bad perm. And Dyson’s just a smart guy who talks too fast. Who cares. Ask yourself, for once, what do you want?  What would you like to see President Obama do for black people? Put yourself and your family first. Then fight for that, no matter what. And if you find somebody with a platform who shares your view,  all the better.

But being loyal to people who aren’t loyal to you will get you nowhere. You don’t need Sharpton or Dyson to tell you what to do or think. You only need courage to stand up for yourself and the people you love. Once your love  for yourself and the people close to you becomes stronger than your love for Obama, or your respect for Sharpton or Dyson, then you’re ready to break free.

You don’t need Maybach money or a black prez to do it. You only need to love yourself more than you love everybody else. Love yourself, and then go for what you want. Everything else is just black noise. And it’s about time we drown it out.

  1. First of all, please excuse my lateness to the party black people but you all should quit hating the messenger and look at the obvious. Obama has not done jack doo doo for blacks in America and the shameful thing is, he is in the best possible position to stem the tides of oppression and inequality that has kept us down for far too long. Instead, what he has done is what all of these high society black folks do when they get into positions of authority. They sell out, distance themselves, and act like they don’t know you anymore. This is what black people generally do when they finally get a seat at the table; they treat their own kind like the stuff hanging at the bottom of their shoe sole.
Yeah, we all bought into the “WOW FACTOR”. You know, the “Wow, our first black president” hype. We all viewed his election as a momentous occasion for blacks in America but now the honeymoon is over. Four years later, ain’t a damn thing has changed. The unemployment rate is still high. Incarceration rate, sky-rocketing. Disparity in minority own business opportunities, astronomically high. Funding for African American businesses, wait on it! Educational opportunities don’t hold your breath. And what does Obama do? He tells black people to shut up and help him fight! For what, more of the same?
So, here’s some advice my brothers and sisters. If Obama is going to look the other way and treat black people just like the rest of the world then black people need to treat him just like any other POTUS. Hold him accountable. Remind him that we got his a$$ elected and re-elected. Demand that we get a fair shake. You know what? To hell with a fair because that won’t even scratch the surface in comparison to what we have endured. We need to be brought us in line with everyone else, in terms of opportunities, growth, and prosperity. WHAT BLACK AMERICA NEEDS IS A PERIOD OF PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT! One thing is for sure people, the likelihood of us ever seeing a black president again is slim to none. The likes of Mitch McConnell, Paul Rand, John Baeoner, and the GOP at large will make damn sure of that.
And what excuse does he have? While the POTUS is dissing us, placing anyone but us in prominent cabinet and Supreme Court positions, won’t set foot anywhere near black communities, tells us to quit bitching, while he’s taking this posture in Washington, he’s being treated like crap and in many parts of the world, while in other parts, his name is being dragged through the mud. And, when they tire of whaling on him, they start in on his first lady. Seems to me, it’s time Obama face facts, take one for the home team, grow some backbone and do us this one solid. By now he should know that he’s damned if he do, and he’s damn if he don’t! And the former jail administrator is WRONG! A history of plight, poverty, oppression, dismantling of black families, lack of a father figure, products of bad environments, lack of hope for a better tomorrow, all go into making a criminal and ultimately landing him into prison. It is fair to say that these problems are not characteristic of any race nearly to the extent that they are characteristic of African American race. Please, get it right!

  2. It's already been said enough times here so I won't restate the obvious. Thus, Ms. Carnell; you must concoct a new lie because black folks are as easily duped as you might have suspected.

  3. I just want to know why is it ok for him to address concerns in the gay community and not in the black? From about 1920 -86 the prisons population went from 80%white 20%black to 20%white 80% black. How did this happen? Since 86 that population has rose 500% It's a certain group of AMERICANS that are getting locked up not getting quality education and bad health care it should be ok for him to address this. Not because they are Black because it's right.

  4. AHHHHH CHOO (bull dung)…. please stop complaining, crying and whining for Obama to be some savior – the leading black media – BLOCKS people who are making changes for the betterment of blacks in America – by keeping up controversy….

I and OTHERS have attempted to share REAL STORIES of crooked cops, sheriff's, da's, ag's, government agents and elected officials – we have VIDEOS of these tax payer rip offs – but black media does us JUST AS BAD as white media….

you hypocritical sell outs – you're too high on your thrones of evil to do what is right.

  5. Cursing out Dyson and Sharpton is not classy. Dyson and Sharpton are leaders in the Black Community, Who the Hell Are You to Judge Them?

  6. In a 'free society' I guess anyone has the right to voice their opinions on anything. Smiley and West put their negative spin out there full of derision, and Dyson and Sharpton did the opposite with positivity. We, as a people, choose the 'positive' to support and reelect our President – not because of 'color' or 'party', but because he best represents 'our' interests. We're definitely savvy enough voters to know that Romney certainly didn't! So – bottom-line, WE WON and some of these haters just need to GET OVER IT!

  7. In a 'free society' I guess anyone has the right to voice their opinions on anything. 8. Altha Cutright- You are quite harsh on my little cousin simply because he voiced his opinion, and it was different from yours! This nation is what it is good/bad, right/wrong, best place to be/worst place to be, whatever- because we are supposed to be free to have an opinion and also free to voice it. MY cousin Leonard Baugh is a veteran of these United States. And if anything, he has a right to voice HIS OPINION about any thing he damned well pleases. HE EARNED that!
Now the next time you feel a strong desire to say such harsh words about anyone, I strongly suggest and highly recommend you find another candidate other than him. Or I WILL hunt you down; I WILL find you and we WILLl have a NONVERBAL conversation!

  9. Why is it that only black people seem to believe it is okay for Obama to do nothing for them? All these lobbies got something out of Obama in order to get support. Look at the gay marriage issue, for example. No one says "he's the President for all America, not just for gay America." They made demands. So should black people. If politicians do not do what you think is good for you, do not support them.

  10. Sharpton they featured him on the front cover of “NewsWeek” along with the heading caption “The Re Invention of the Rev. Al Sharpton” before that they gave him a national radio show, they slated him a reality show they headed him a Black organization called NAN,they made him the source for those killed or brutalized by the police. They ran him around the country with the likes of Arney Duncan the Obama administration Education Sec. and the likes of Newt Gingrich these stooges were instruments in fostering the President’s program “Race To The Top” and getting rid of public education. Al was even given another sunday radio and a Tv show where he talks about education. Al also has been given a MSNBC hour long show where he is the Obama administration’s lap dog where he defends everything Obama.

Now how did Black people allow this? Al Sharpton has now been compared to the likes of MLK. and No one has pointed this out and No one has drawn attention to how Black people have now come to accept anyting and anyone. Just try to bring up the issue of “The Black Agenda” or the subject of Black Proverty try bringing up the likes of Travis Smiley or Dr. West. Have you not noticed that Black people Nolonger meYes it is without question that some of Us have in fact been “TRICKED” by this President and some of those who have joined onto his message. What a tangle web we weave when we practice to decieve. We have always had “Traitors” among us,in the 60’s all of government at every level along with all of it’s local affilliates created a special program to deal with “The Rise Of Black People” the program than was called “COINTELPRO” short for Counter intelligence Program.

This government program has never been abolished, disband, discontinued. In fact this program continues to exist to this very day, some of the charters have died off and in many ways “COINTELPRO” has increased, profected and broaden it’s scope using a more cerficticated, technological approach to it’s arsenal. Now again the message is indeed the same as well the motive the only difference now from the 60’s is not that many suspect that “COINTELPRO” is back and the degree to which this program is being used on the masses to include the other “BROWN” and disadvantaged people. Those that makeup Mitt Romney’s 47% and Dr.John Coleman’s term “The Useless Eaters”.

The U.S governments program used many varying degrees of mind-control much of them have been dusted off and some have even been updated for example “Drones”, “HARRP”,”Bio genetically altered water and food sources. Have you not noticed that hardly anyone applies “Critical Thinking “to anything anymore and fewer question any alteral motive on anything of importance. Put short “Thinking” and “sound reasoning” are now things of the past. Just look at for example how they place their “Token”black leadership upon Us. take for example Al ntion the phase ‘Struggle” and absolutely No one thinks of openly speakingout against this administration about real core Black issues and holding this black president accountable? Yes the experiment continues and the degree that the hearts and minds of the masses is sliping away very very fast

  11. I get so tired of you people saying that Obama is not just the black people’s president. We know this. But, what we want is for him to be the president for everyone including black people. He regularly addresses Hispanic issues right? He regularly addresses gay and lesbian issues right? He regularly addresses women’s issues right? He I have spoken many times concerning Jewish issues and Israel right? Blacks are and have a store it been the most oppressed race or class of people in US history! Dr. Dyson and tell Sharpton promised to take the president to task on these issues when he was running for president in 2008; they have not because MSNBC would not stan
d for it. We are not asking for Obama to be the president of black people. But, it would be nice if he showed some concern for the black plight just as he shows concern for the plight of all the other oppressed minorities.

  12. As a “black” man there is nothing that I want from the government besides getting them to stop locking up our young brothers and sisters at a higher rate than whites for the same crime, especially a crime such as drug possession.

More whites do drugs but there are more blacks in jail for having drugs. If you get rid of the crime then less young men go to jail, and more can get grants and financial aid for school. Then they will be in a better position to provide for their families and actually be there for their sons and daughters. If you keep locking them up then they become second class citizens who are unable to vote, unable to get a good job and thereby unable to support their families. Marijuana is not a drug. It’s a plant. I don’t smoke marijuana but who am I to be telling others that they can’t. Especially if alcohol is legal. But that’s for another discussion.

If you lock someone up at a young age they are stuck with a record for life never to learn from their mistakes and forever stuck with the charges. The government can help blacks by not making it illegal to possess a plant. That’s what I want from my government. I don’t need a check or to be patronized, lobbied or pandered to by any political party. I’d like to be left alone without policemen patrolling my neighborhood looking for people who look like me and waiting for me to commit a crime when they are not in the white neighborhoods looking for weed smokers and cocaine abusers. If the police are out patrolling neighborhoods, then the probability of them catching a criminal is higher but the probability of racial profiling is also higher if most of the people you arrest are of a certain color.

Here’s how it would work, not overnight, but over time. Don’t send a young man to jail in the prime of his life then he can get a degree or work and be a productive member of society. He can then be there for his son and daughter and with the support of a two family household young black and brown people can have the support to then become more productive members of society.

  13. Ms Carnell, why don’t you point your high powered
profile that you seem to have of other people
at yourself, and see if the same kind of
blanketed indictment that you so freely apply to
other people also apply to you.

  14. Ms. Carnell,

Just tell me one thing — why did you not include Melissa Harris-Perry in your scathing criticism. Were these two men any worse than this woman? If you don’t believe that to be the case and you care not to make the same criticism of a female who deserves it, then f**k you!

  15. This story is total b/s. Like Bobby Randle said "Obama said that he would be the president for all america now you want him to be president just for black america" Honestly you people tend to forget he is ALSO WHITE. You can't just vote for this man because you EXPECT him to work for JUST THE BLACKS. Total b/s. He can't solve ALL of our problems.

    • GRanted he came into some shit but if any president is going to attend to black/urban issues you would expect it to be the president that most closely relates to you. The money never trickles down enough under republicans and when it's time to make cuts it always start with the masses irrespective of party, hence low income people or blacks. I can't say much because there is a hell of amount of debt on his hands which he has yet to really make a dent in and it has arguably increased i heard. But when your spending in other areas, like military, is still so high…it seems like neglect. Truth though it shouldn't be a black thing but blacks always have and still do have issues. I am kinda peeved at the trillions of dollars they are cutting from public education as well

    • Mukeke James Do you hear yourselF. you sound even WORST then this lady that wrote this. What make you think that blacks are the ONLY one struggling in the U.S for him to just tend to our needs and forget the rest of america just because he is HALF african american. We are mostly about "me" and not about "us". We must change our ways of thinking back to the collective, that same collective mentality that took us from Africa through slavery… what is it that we blacks want? Is there a realistic, focused agenda to help uplift our communities? Don't just complain.. Hold Congress and the CBC accountable.. What are we AS AFRICAN AMERICANS doing to better our own situations? What are we doing to help better others' situations in our communities? The responsibility does not stop with one man.. We all have a responsibility to do better.. The President is not our savior..

    • Jayee Wright YOu say what are we doing to better our own situations. The ceiling for many, low income, blacks is very low. I think the perspective of the black population, is that as a people they have time after time received the short end of the stick. They must feel like the forgotten people. SO with such a trend and the background of a specific people it gives the intimation that it is a race thing. Even in voting trends you see that the "white male" voted romney. This is where the black "collective" comes into play. That is the same group that falls under elitist in this country. it is also of noting, that this is a country where money matters and big businesses control much of the decision making that goes on in this country, i.e. super pacs. Who controls most of these corporations? White male. This country is not tailored for blacks, hispanics, and many others with a minority say in political affairs. It shouldn't be a race thing, I am with you, but if anyone is going to take into consideration of the black plight and the struggle, it has to be black people as a collective. You expect it to be the man that has a say in everything that happens in this country. Not to mention that he has a refreshing commonality with blacks that isn't religion or state related. The support for upward mobility amongst the masses must come from someplace and that is probably why blacks give obama heat. Again he is working with shit so im not sure how easy people expect that to be. yet why not put pressure on him.

  16. Yvette and rest of you lamebrain black tea baggers,
You all are just jealous…..Aren't you satisfied with the money you are getting from the Koch Bros………Where were you house boys and girls when Bush and all the other White presidents was running this country…..Funny I never heard of you house boys and girls until Obama became President……

  17. Whoever wrote this is an amateur. Check me out. http://www.thepeoplesmic.blogspot.com. It will make you feel better about this crap you just read!

  18. This “Article” was just silly and meritless. If you want to read something worthwhile, please check out my blog on politics, race, religion and society at large. Once again…Very unintelligent article. No facts, just a bunch of hot air from someone that doesn’t understand the issues. And BTW, this is coming from someone that is no friend of Michael Eric Dyson. This was a hack-job. http://www.thepeoplesmic.blogspot.com – P.S, Al Sharpton & President Obama have done more for black-folk than almost anyone in America! If you don’t know that then your brainwashing worked!

  19. I am so tired of hearing Smiley’s and West’s diatribe about what the President is not doing for poor people, and now this chick Carnell has jumped on their silliness bandwagon. Poverty existed long before Obama, and will exist long after his tenure. All of this name calling and putting down other Black leaders is counterproductive. I see these two have written another book they are trying to sell. How much of those proceeds will they donate to poor people? How much of the proceeds from Tavis books that he wrote while a contributor to the Joyner show did he donate to poverty? One of those books was written solely from contributions from the Joyner listening audience, and was on the NY Times bestselling list. How much of those proceeds did he donate to the people that contributed to the book? He used the Joyner show to promote his own agenda, and left for more lucrative opportunities. How much of the proceeds from their appearances on the “Poverty Tour” are they donating to poverty? Cornel needs to go home to his white wife, focus on teaching theology, and try to build coalitions to solve these problems; perhaps become a community organizer like the President did out of college. Many of these problems are better handled on the local and community level. Talk is cheap, and we are still our own worst enemy.

The President cannot fix many of these problems, because the root cause of much of it is self-perpetuated; beginning with the family structure, or lack thereof. If young girls and women continue to have multiple births out-of-wedlock, and expect the government to take care of these children, then the problem will persist. Furthermore, they lack parenting skills and fail to instill values of education and a work ethic in these children. They want something for nothing, and their children adopt the same lifestyle; creating a vicious cycle. This is what Smiley and West should be addressing. Bill Cosby tried, and he was criticized. The road out of poverty should begin in the home–education and hard work. Most of our generation attended inferior schools. Yet we were successful because our families instilled in us values of education, morals, community, and hard work. We have to stop making excuses for the behavior of our people, and allow them to take responsibility for their own actions. Every time a Black male gets killed running out of a business with something he has stolen, the community is in an uproar. We want to march in front of the business, boycott the business, and have these so-called community leaders calling for justice for the PERPETRATOR. How whacked is that? Too many of our young men would rather spend their time robbing businesses, and our homes, than in school learning. The President cannot fix that! We would all be better served if West and Smiley would focus their poverty tour addressing this, rather than focusing on what the President is failing to do. The President can use all the help and SUPPORT he can get. Put your money where your mouths are, Smiley and West.

As an educator, I am embarrassed at the behavior of our Black students. They are loud, disruptive, and are not focused on learning, but on foolishness. They are failing to take advantage of the education that is available to them; education that can move them out of poverty. The President cannot fix this. Immigrants come to this country not looking for government to solve any of their problems, but to take advantage of the opportunities that are there for those that want to work hard. They do work hard, SAVE their money, invest in businesses (not bling), support each other, and instill values of education and a strong work ethic in their children. We did that back-in-the-day, and we can do that again; if we can get out of the “gimme” mindset–that someone owes us something. Ask not what our country can do for us, but what we can do for ourselves!

  20. Self hate is a terrible trait posses, the Willie Lynch syndrome is well installed and working perfectly as intended. I somehow feel that that the writer would be happier with an Obama second term losing bid than to earn the currency for the remainder of his agenda. Until the black man in America realize that the journey from being a slave (Property) to real citizenship is one that each and every one have to partake them self and no one president or government can fix it. You all see the fight he got from the republicans and also the Blue Dog Democrats within his won party from the very start of his first term, and he was still able to turn the economy around and achieve some notable successes. But as Marcus Garvey who suffered from the same type of self hate during his sojourn here said " The black man will not know himself until his back is against he wall" A healthy dose of skepticism is a good thing but too much of it is crippling and self defeating, I agree with Bobby that the President is the President for all and not just for the blacks. Its kinda hard to look beyond the color of the President's skin because there is so much that we the blacks know that needs to be done, This president is probably the best that our society have ever sent to the white house. I firmly think that if the republicans did not offend the Latinos, Gays and the women this time around, a lot more of the fickle minded roast breadfruits blacks would have dropped him like a hot potato and ensure a loss in his second term bid. The blacks have nothing to lose in being hopeful in having someone in leadership that have proven that he cares for poor struggling people. Be of good cheer and support a good leader, don't be afflicted with the same bad mind and hate that have now paralyzed the GOP. Blessed love

  21. Yvette: I wish wanna-be journalist like you would at least educate yourself about politics and the political process before you open mouth and insert foot. It is obvious from your 'article' (and I use the term loosely) that you don't know Jacksh*t about how things work from a political perspective. It is also obvious that you, Dr. Boyce, Cornel West, and Tavis Smiley are the ones receiving pay-offs and acting like puppets for the white man. But you underestimated the black community. Most of us are not sellouts like the four of you. We knocked on doors, made phone calls, donated money, and registered voters like our lives depended on it (and it did) in order to get President Obama re-elected. Uncle Toms like you and your ilk have been with us throughout history. But they never succeed. WE WON. So sit down now and STFU!

  22. We can not blame anyone for our disorganization, which I believe I s by design. As a people we embrace everyone but each other. Our inability to come together to put.
the proper pressure on that office, is obvious and we should have down to a science.
by now.We all know who really call the shots. Are any of you willing to sacrifice your.
lives or the lives of your family for people who merely want someone to do the fighting while they hold the coat. Our president needs the support of everybody that.
lives in this country. The demise of our country has been a collective effort and should.
be the same in finding solutions, We already got several nailed to the cross for the.
people, do we want to sacrifice him and his too.Time to stand up collectively has long.
passed, we voted him in lets help him do what he promised he would do.He understood the pressure he would face.He only needs our support.

  23. Absolutely ridiculous article. We should never assume any responsiblities for ourselves. Instead, we should hold everybody else in the world responsible for our plight. We sell drugs be our communties are targeted and we’re in desperate need of the income. We have babies we can’t buy a gallon of milk for because we’re longing for someone to love. Our young males are hauled off to prisons acroos the country because the system was designed to make them falter. Afterall, their crimes are NOT that serious- they’re not mass murderers! President Obama should identify with and make special provisions for African Americans at the expense of every other race. We shouldn’t have to figure out how to graduate from high school and attend college or technical or get any sort of job training. We were tricked into mortgages we couldn’t afford so the government should pick up the tab. We shouldn’t begin to try to understand that eventually welfare and EBT cardsand housing vouchers are going to be a thing of the past. Survival of the fittest will be the rule of the day. But there’s no need for us to worry. After all, someone else bigger than us should take care of all these things. And if they don’t they’ve failed us.

  24. What an inane article. First of all, who are "Black people?" We are not monolithic and thus any legislative act or policy enactment by Obama would only touch upon potions of the Black community. But which? But the main issue is the writer's political naivete. If the president had ventured deeply into a purely Black agenda in race-conscious America, you can bet he wouldv'e been a one term president. His second term is the time for his payback to the Black community via addressing poverty, race in sentencing, employment disparities, etc. I was greatly disappointed in and suspicious of Cornell West and Tavis Smiley for going in on Obama on the poverty agenda issue. First of all, how arrogant is Smiley to think the most powerful man on the plant is going to give his small time a** three days out of his schedule to discuss poverty. Since when did Tavis become an expert on grass roots poverty. All he was trying to do was sell his book. West and Smiley are smart enought to know that Obama could not appear to be too Black in his first term. If they are not careful, they'll begin to be viewed as Black Donald Trumps.

    • I agree and I've always said, had he addressed the plight of black america in his first term he would be lucky to have survived to see a second term. The Tea Party nearly lost their minds and he not as much mentioned African Americans. I cant stomach Tavis Smiley and I have a very hard time with Michael Dyson. But until we Wake Up we will fall for the hype of Negrolites every time.

  25. Don't ge it twisted..this article was written by the author Yvette to upset black people to generate traffic for profit. Understand that before taking this article too serious..commentaries on West, Smiley, President Obama are always good conversation pieces to generate alot of bloggers for profit. Without bloggers..Boyce and Yvette don't eat!

  26. My fightis to win ppls souls. Each day God places more creativity within me to a work for His kingdom. Wealth and wisdom cometh from God. When we have more ppl to stand up to this belief we don’t need to hear what any of these so called leaders say or do. Put that energy into restoration for the loss. God can do teh miraculous. I can’t wait for the money to keep flowing for the creative dream God placed within me to HIS WORK and no one elses. God said we are to live in abundance then why are so many in poverty and appear to be comfortable with it? NO! This is not what gods word says. I will tell you if you keep putting trust in these so called black leaders and Washington you will remain in the position you are in for the duration of your life on earth.
When God restores He gives back 7-fold of all teh devil stolen from us. And to Bobby what you said is the truth BUT…when children growing up are not receving love within thier home, lacking support in thier schooling/education they feel like a nothing. Therefore this is the number one cause for prisons being so full. When someone does not feel loved they will go out to get some kind of attention. NO! I am not condoning robbery and murder but in theri minds this is all that they know. So instead of pointing fingers at bad parenting, criminals, etc. Lets have PREVENTIVE Programs reaching out to the loss instead of criticizing them. None of know what goes on behind closed doors! And who are we to JUDGE! There is only 1 Judge. I rest my case!

  27. Please…. this is lame. Black people should have an agenda to present to the president. One that is relevant. He is not in office for just black people. He is TRYING to do what is right for all people. Blacks should stop giving excuses for what is not right in their lives. Do the right thing and stop glorifying the negativity that is shown on television. Grow up, be responsible and productive citizens and we wouldn't need an agenda that focused on mass incarciration and unemployment. We should take heed to our forefathers and not let the works of MLK and others be in vain. Become educated, participate in the community, know the issues, help mentor the youth, encourage fellow man, stop criticizing, provide positive feedback along with constructive criticism, instill positive self esteem in our children, MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES and see how things can turnaround for the good of our people. Just a suggestion!

  28. Thank you Rev Sharpton for exposing the facts and letting us know the truth about the other side. I would rather the President winning than Romney. How about you?

  29. I didn’t find one point in your article that I could agree with. Barack Obama is the President of the United States of America, not only one segment of the population. It’s insulting that you believe we allowed 2 talk show commentators sway our vote. We have traditionally voted Democratic. Do you feel we should have voted for Romney? Why do you feel it is necessary to hold this President to a higher standard than his predecessors? What type of legislation do you think would prevent us from being incarcerated? And since the President doesn’t initiate legislation, have you petitioned any of your representatives over such legislation? Giving Obama hell? Please.

  30. Let's see, He swept the whole East coast who have plenty of white folk in them, especially Maine and other states like Iowa and Oregon – Hell we all tricked then :). Well good, glad I was tricked then! Wrong-ney would had pushed us back 50 years, especially women. the author of this text couldn't think of anything else to write and drunk some "Hator"rade to get her check this week. The author is Weak! Come again please.

  31. Understand the game people. Had he been overly generous to black folk during his 1st term he wouldn't have gotten re-elected. Only goal of his 1st term was to get a 2nd term. As you all can see can only do so much with 1 term in office. You heard him tell the russian president "I'll have a little more flexibility when I'm re-elected". Like a game of chess and too few of you seem to understand. Now he has another 4 yrs to make some significant strides. Let's c what happens.

  32. Gwendolyn Rosemond

Dumbest thing I've read in a long time. Other comments on this have spoken well on how off base it is, so I won't waste my time and yours repeating the obvious. Ms. Carnell needs to step outside of her comfort zone and broaden her perspective.

  33. @ most of you commiting on this page. You guys sound like you are uneducated and paid by the same fellows who have BS all of the Black community. I don't give a dam about having a Black president if he fails to improve the conditions within his own culture. Oreo's in black face. If you can ask your brother for help who can you ask negoe's

  34. @ bobby Randle, with guys like you in the black community, we will never get nothing. You and this uncle tom mentality kills me. We don't care what the campaign. Ads promotes Obama must say he for all the people, but in all honesty that not how the game goes. If you keep acting like a good boy we all will finish last. Even your children , children .

  35. I very upset when I first saw sharpton and Dyson promoting this agenda to African American to not put Obama's feet to the fire in his first term. We failed our childrens future by allowing these two gens to intimidate many of are leaders from forcing the president to at least to commit to dealing with the enslavement of our young Black brother into these private jails. In this term I deploy every black and brown person to force the administration to deal with black community affair from the on set. Dyson, Sharpton, and Steve Harvey, etc get your uncle tom ass out the way or feel the pain brothers.

  36. I see alotta self hating, house broken coons on this wall.no respect whatsoever for the rules of survival, or truth.making excuses for their enemies and their enemies' minions…stood in long lines for hours to vote, only to make excuses for the same guy that's supposed to repay your race for voting the same way he has repaid each and every single demographic that voted for him..blaming inner city violence on the young black teenagers that are cursed to be born in a warzone,, yet society has watched this same war go on in the innercities for 100 years now..whose more at fault, blind, disenfranchised, stereotyped 16 yr ollds,, or the systematic oppresive society that keeps them contained in the inner city? BLACK PEOPLE WOULD NOT BE VIOLENT TOWARDS EACH OTHER IF THE CONDITIONS BLACK PEOPLE LIVE IN WERE NOT PROVOCATIVE OF VIOLENCE…IN AN UNSAFE ENVIRONMENT THE STRONG EATS THE WEAK.BLAME UR CONGRESSMAN NOT THE VICTIMS OF CITY HALLS POLICIES..THE FIRST TO NEED HELP AND THe LAST TO RECIEVE IT IS ALWAYS THE POOR BLACK.ASK KATRINA VICTIMS OR THE NYC SANDY VICTIMS IN THE GHETTO.EVIDENCE OF Y BLACKS WILL NEVER B FREE IS CLEAR..WE BLAME EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF WILLIE LYNCH..OBAMA WILL SAVE 1000 GABBY GIFFORDS BEFORE HE EVER SAVES A STARVING BLACK MALE FROM SOUTHSIDE CHICAGO. gtfoH GOD PLEASE RAISE TUPAC FROM THE GRAVE THESE FOLKS HAVE LOST THEIR WAY.

  37. Michael Dyson is the only person I know with acess who has argued forcefully with the President, to his face, in the White House, about targeted remedies for the institutional racism that handicaps black people economically and in most other spheres of life in America. In public he has supported Barack, understnding that the aternative, for black people, was simply untenable.

    • Khephra – I agree with you. Are blacks better off? no way (foreclosures up, poverty up, high imprisonment rates, death penalty still around). Are hispanics better off? no way (he did not push through immigration reform and ditto for blacks). Are gays better off ? maybe, but largely thanks to courts and Joe Biden, who forced Obama's hand. Are women better off – not really. Yes, the GOP would have been a lot worse, but Obama has a lot to show for the broad, rainbow coalition who gave him a second term. My take…

    • Khephra I agree with you. I think the President has to walk a tight rope unlike any of us could imagine. He has to surreptitiously gain favor for those he care the most about or else lose all advantage. He has to be the Jackie Robinson of politics to have a small voice versus having none at all. I wish that Obama would have done more for us, I wish the congress would have done more for us and I wish the Senate would have done more for us and this wish goes back to 1619! Until then we forge ahead and we make breakthroughs. One of the most significant breakthroughs thus far Is electing the POTUS for a second term. The symbolism alone is intoxicating and will have an incredible rippling affect for decades to come.

    • I am totally in agreement with you Khephra. I am a fan of Michael Dyson and his approach to the issues. I'll take your statement a bit further and say that the alternative to President Obama was not only untenable for Black folks, but untenable for America in general, and America showed that at the polls. President Obama is president for all of America and like it or not, that includes a lot of big money corporations who also supported him. Now-a-days, it seems anyone can become a "writer" but it does not mean they or their writings are relevant.

  38. Wow, again. My entire black family/friends are doing well, no one in jail, all of us have at least a high school diploma, all of us have jobs not minimum wage, vehicles, all of us have decent housing, the kids are all doing very well in school, and all of us voted for Obama. I wish you all would stop making exaggerating how badly black folks are doing, and more importantly blaming the President for those who made poor choices in life. Did anyone ask Obama if they should commit the crime? No, then why should they ask him to do something about it now, you guys just need to give it a rest.

    • Nobody is blaming the President for anything. and yes there are exceptions to the rules. But I didn't not vote for Obama just because he is black. I voted for change too. It may not be the change you wanted, but it's change none the less.

    • Meekee, come on now….its good to hear of your family successes as you name them, however its not abnormal in fact its fairly normal, make that stardard and as intelligent as I know you are you just dont get it. When folks say the system they mean "People of power" always want it to appear that the minority is just sooooooo lazy and does not have dreams, goals nor aspirations. People with jobs, diplomas, vehicles and positions above minimum wages are merely surviving. When we can have a normal get out and vote, and not worry about "People of power" altering the vote and creating laws that would alter the vote, thats real success. Have an awesome day.

    • My point is, stop making it sound like majority of us are poor and doing badly, because that isn't the truth. Majority of us are doing well, far from rich but well. And I do get the fact that the odds are against us, however, knowing that should make us more determined to do better. That's all I'm saying, we need to do better and stop crying victim and blaming others, we need to be more responsible for our own communities. President, Sharpton, West, Tavis isn't our solution, we are. And maybe I am a little bit out of touch with our community because I've never lived in a predominately black area. However, when I did live in a low-income area I hated every minute of it, the mentality was very different.

  39. Obama Is A Puppet The Rest Are Tom, Dick, Harry Who Gives A Fuck Either Did Shit For My Community… New Black Panther Tampa, FL. Chairman

  40. "Dr. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley both implored the black electorate to push Obama for a black agenda." President Obama is the President of the United States of America, not just one ethnic group.

  41. Keeatae Hatcher Sr

Damn, what did they do to you? Your point is bogus to me. It’s just politics, love of self is mandatory & has nothing to do with your rant. Sounds like you’re looking for a spot on fox lol

  42. There is a mode of disagreement that is far more appropriate than the advice ‘…f*ck’em…!’ Surely, we can disagree without disrespect! From what I see in the classroom every day, Black folk – and many others – would do well to stop looking for a SAVIOUR outside of ourselves! Even if President Obama decided to act on ‘our’ agenda, exactly which agenda would that be…? What would be a satisfactory resolution for ALL OF US BLACK FOLK? Now is the time to be truly forthright and honest with ourselves, there are precious few jobs to be obtained in the country – and that is if you are highly qualified! Since you have a platform from which to speak, use it to empower and encourage! When people begin to see relevance and purpose in and for their lives, there will be no need to advise them to seek leadership from this one or not from that one…they will know from whom the most excellent advice springs and then make their own decisions to either follow or not! PEACE!

  43. I have wrote to Tavis and Cornel asking them to submit just what they want President Obama to table for congress to approve on how to reduce the incarceration rate for Blacks in America.

Tavis and his friend should really try to get Black kids to go to a Univerity or a College for an education instead of just trying to be the best basketball, and football players.Have you noticed how many Asians,Jewish,Chinese, people play in the NBA and NFL, but have the most Doctors, Lawyers, Pharmicists and Teachers in the United States.

Let’s strive to educate our young.

  44. This is typical difference of opinion,Sharpton,Dyson, have not sold out anyone, they did what it takes to be heard by the masses, not just by anyone one group but all. There is no need for two people to try and pressure the president. quiet as kept he knows what he's doing. I find it irresponsible of Yvette, because she knows this president knows he can be more effective by governing the united states than, being stupid and having a specific race agenda. We are the united states not a certain color. That is the way of the TEApublican, hadhe not gotten re-elected,you would see a black agenda, that is exactly the mission of the TEApublican, racial divide, they disrespected Presdent Obama and the office for the last four years, one intent to see him rejected, did not work , thank GOD,not you,not watkin, not smiley and not that educated other fool west. I have listen and read most of all of the intellect BS from each of you, parading poison against this president, rather than encourage and support you attack Dyson and Sharpton, they have help him get reelected ,whereas your team have acted just as the TEApublicans. I say to you guys, leave that uneducated, outdated, crab in the barrel,to the usual suspect, let the President do his job and help not Hate,he's a winner, and the way your team act you can't win…peace

  45. What pleases me about this article is the response from readers. Just as I am delighted that so many of our people came out and voted, so I am pleased that your opinion as a contributing writer is not taking root and being cultivated in our view, and we do have opinions and views that apparently different from yours. It is unfortunate that your words are fruitless and in my opinion sadly expressed. This point of view is from another writer’s perspective.

  46. Sometimes I ask myself "What are Black issues"? I am a firm believer in personal responsibility. I know the odds are stacked up against me. Keep stacking, because I am going to keep knocking them down and press forward.

  47. You can't "legislate" more employment. Businesses don't hire so you can have a job. They hire because they need help in producing or selling a product or service. Jobs are a byproduct of a successful business, not the reason for it's existence.

Obama ain't giving Negroes jack. Anytime you give 95% vote to anyone, you won't be taken seriously by the beneficiary or the opposition, you're nothing but glorified groupies or a fan club, at that point.Neither side trips off u, cause they already know.

The best thing Obama can do to help Blacks is stop pissing off the people who CREATE JOBS…DUH….

Stop acting like Blacks are some perennial special needs cases.Government doesn't create jobs. All it can do is get in the way or out of the way of the people who do.

  48. Michael Eric Dyson nor Al Shaprton are my spokesperson.

  49. To quote the human rights activist, Ella Baker, "Strong people don't need strong leaders."

  50. SMDH. Seriously? I submit that the love we have for ourselves, our families and society-at-large, are the reasons many of us voted for President Obama…TWICE
Black Americans are not brainwashed into thinking that PBO was a magic Negro who would ride into the White House and save all of us po colored folks. You shouldn't think so lowly of us. West and Smiley are, quite simply full of sh@t; most of us have rejected their BS because they don't speak for us.

  51. Look it up Fair Sentencing Act.
    That was signed by POTUS.

  52. Regardless as to the political clout and sociological prestige these two individuals find at the end of their proverbial rainbow, one thing will remain constant and may never change, that is : white anglo saxon protestants (including their new friends arabs, indians, and asians), will never welcome any person of African persuasion with a African central line of thinking (as if each one the aforementioned left their universal identity somewhere in the past).

No. The idea and objective is to keep the descendants of america’s ex communicated African slave population pre occupied with challenges facing this whole white wonderful world they built for ‘themselves’, rather than staying on course with becoming an independent nation. America is no country for black people. So, what now? We watch as the entire coalition of eurasiaindopakaghanistanians who figure they might as well exploit the resources of Africa as long as no coalition of African forces is formed to resist and these American type continue pledging undying loyalty to one of the most covertly racist institutions on earth.

  53. Another crap writer promoting victimology in the black community.

  54. Where were you in the previous presidents elections? You, Colin West, and Travis Smiley wants to cause division in the Blsck community…Since America has a black president, you think thst all focus should be on the black community issues…A lot of your proganda is state issues…This is the United States of America NOT black America…Sharpton and Dyson doesn't speak for the of color…We the people have common sense….

  55. This article is pure BS – I am thankful for the commentary of Rev Al; Dr Dyson; and MHP – I am glad I can think for myself and denounce you trolls!

  56. This article is way off, just more attacking of our own.Sad!

  57. Real change happens in the community, not from so-called leaders and not from Washington. You don't ask President Obama to come and coach your pee wee football team, do you? No! Local leaders step up to the challenge and help…not only providing support for the sport aspect of the team but also providing encouragement and building self-confidence in the youth of that community.

The same attention has to be placed on our political issues…local community leadership, moms and dads from that community, must take the needs of that community to our local elected officials, and those elected officials have to stand up for us with government leadership.

Cats like Al and Michael are entertainers! They are paid to entertain us…they are not our leaders.

They have never delivered one bottle of water or one box of food to anyone in need. They have never built a school in anyone's neighborhood nor have they attended a PTA meeting….but you can find them on local t.v. when you have time to sit down at home and be entertained.

If you must pick a leader, pick a cat like Bill Strickland. He has been an adviser to the White House regarding building communities; not because he talks about it, but because he has done it, and can show other communities how to do it too!

Communities have to empower themselves to educate and employ those who are not receiving opportunities from traditional sources.

    Stop following and lead!~.

    • I definitely agree with you Phillip. Why depend on others for what we can do for ourselves (rhetorical question)? Louis Farrakhan has been preaching that for years. We need to strengthen our communities and attempt to fix our own problems ourselves. Sharpton, Dyson, and others are just entertainers. They never provided me with anything so I have never looked at them as so called "black leaders".

  58. YVETTE CARNELL, may GOD bless you so much, for YOU ARE WONDERFUL. These are my thoughts EXACTLY. YVETTE PLEASE KEEP SPEAKING YOUR MIND, BECAUSE FOR ME, YOU ARE VERY REFRESHING.

  59. Personally, I do believe you giving Al Sharpton and Eric Michael Dyson more credit than they deserve. Rev Sharpton can't pronounce the names of his guess and his show may not last much longer. I"m surprised it has lasted as long as it has. He just repeats the daily talking-points" of MSNBC everyday, nothing new. But I'll give him credit for not going along with the Fraud that NBC was perpetrating on us regarding the election. And they still haven't admitted they were Wrong with their analysis. Yeah, a really tight race, President Obama won eight of nine swing states, and blacks turned out to vote in record numbers in some cities. But I recall NBC analyst saying how "unenthusiastic" blacks were about voting for him.

My point is, you can't rely on any of the nonsense we're being fed by the Main Stream Media.

  60. It is extremely unfortunate that you choose to take these 2 men's approach as insignificant. Though I have never been fond of either. I do not believe their (Sharpton or Dyson) intent was to "dupe" us by taking a stance of passive criticism or no criticism at all. President Obama, had enough challengers to his agenda and ultimately his presidency from the outside, that I can understand the possible reasoning behind their silence during the first term. Do I wholly agree with their approach? No, not at all. I agree with Cornel West when he speaks about holding one accountable, with love. I think the real issue is that you cannot expect a president regardless of race to have pertinent concern for a minority group, that throughout history has been ignored by the system. Mr. Obama, as is any president with the exception of a few, simply a micro-manager for that system. The explicit demands we have as sub-group of this incredible melting pot of a nation, cannot be met by any President, especially not based on some insignificant solidarity based on mutual skin color.

Malcolm X and other leaders before and after him, have consistently pleaded with us to unify our demands and accomplish them collectively for ourselves. Sharpton has never represented my community, nor Eric M. Dyson neither their supposed opponents of West/Smiley. We should not be surprised by this political posturing and understand the simple idiom "many are called, very few are chosen".

In conclusion, these 4 men represent the diverse thought found in the Black community, thought they in no represent the whole. I believe as stated that we need merge our diversity of thought into specific demands, and demand of ourselves the commitment and integrity necessary for the incredible task that lies ahead of us.

    Selah

  61. Both Sharpton and Dyson have a perspective that they champion…just as West, Watkins and Smiley have. The difference is both Rev AL and Michael work for a news agency that has its own agenda, and as employess working as pundits for that news agency, they are responsible to promote their employers point of view.We all do that in our respective workplaces…and none of us represent anyone other than ourselves

  62. Negros always looking for somebody to blame. Complained there was never a black President, now we have one, negro's ain't happy. Not enough black faces in the news media so Sharpton gets a show, Melissa Perry gets a show, Dyson is a regular fill in host for shows as well, negro's complain. Hell even TJ Holmes gets a show, negro's would rather watch RHOA. And now the narrative is Sharpton and Dyson somehow mind freaked all of black America. Hell if it weren't for Sharpton using his radio and tv shows as a platform to expose the lies, tricks and attempted voter suppression of the right, Nov 6th may have had a different outcome. Or is it really Jealousy for some. For all the intellectual talk of West and the never accomplished anything yearly STOBU symposiums of Smiley, they still haven't made the big time. These negro's didn't even support the election of Pres Obama, yet they curiously feel they have some right to hold him to task and criticize, and act as if they aren't profiting from pimping poverty? Oh yes, its mighty curious how Sharpton, Perry, Dyson all seem to be the enemy once they get a show(for Dyson fill-in hosting) on a major cable news network, while West and Smiley are still relegated to podcast and a half hour midnight interview show for Smiley on PBS at that. And then there are the "whatcha going to do for me" negro's who expect something for nothing from the POTUS. The ones who come with no agenda, and get mad when those who do have agenda's and do the work to get them recognized, get what they want. But I guess Obama is supposed to "hook a brotha up" just because. It was known going in Pres Obama wasn't Malcom X, so why all the dismay now? Oh, because black folk voted for him, but blacks don't vote for blacks because they're black, so it had to be because of political affiliation right? So Obama could have been white as snow, but the majority of blacks are Dem, so they would have voted Dem, and would have expected something back from white Obama too right? I wonder

    • You murdered in that post. Very nice.

    • I AINT NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT NOT HAVIN A BLACK PREZ..IVE ALWAYS COMPLAINED ABOUT THE FACT THAT MIT,GEORGETOWN AND NEW YORK UNIVERSITY OFFERED ME FULL ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS WHEN I WAS ENROLLED IN A WHITE SCHOOL,,WHITE SCHOOL GOT JEALOUS THAT A POOR BLACK MALE WAS IN THE TOP 5 PERCENT OF SMART KIDS IN THE STATE AND SENT ME TO A POOR BLACK SCHOOL,,AND THE LETTERS STOPPED COMING…I COMPLAIN ABOUT SHIT LIKE THAT ALL THE TIME..I COMPLLAIN ABOUT THE FACT THAT MY PREDECESSORS BUILT THIS CAPITOLIST COUNTRY AND WERE NEVER COMPENSATED…I COMPLAIN ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE JEWS,JAPS AND INDIANS WERE GIVEN REPARATIONS..I COMPLAIN ABOUT THE FACT THAT BLACKS WERE GIVEN REPARATIONS BUT SAW THEM REVOKED JUST AS QUICKLY…I COMPLAIN ABOUT THE FACT THAT BLACKS CREATED KHEMISTRY AND MATH,BUT ARE STEREOTYPED AS STUPID JUST BECAUSE WE R YOUNG AND LOVE HIPHOP….I COMPLAIN ABOUT THE FACT THAT IF TAYLOR SWIFT OR POTUS HAS HIPHOP ON THEIR IPOD,,NOBODY CALLS THEM STUPID OR LAZY…I COMPLAINED WHEN THE HELP FOR HAITI I TEXTED NEVER REACHED ONE HATIAN…..I COMPLAINED WHEN I WAS FIRED FROM MY JOB FOR SOMETHING A WHITE WOMAN DID….I COMPLAINED WHEN MY LAWYER DIDNT EXPLAIN TO ME THAT ONCE I PLEAD GUILTY,,ILL NEVER BE ABLE TO VOTE IN TENNESSEE…I COMPLAINED WHEN THE POLICE BEAT THE SHIT OUTTA ME FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING…I COMPLAINED WHEN THE POTUS WENT TO THE HOSPITAL TO SEE THE BATMAN SHOOTING VICTIMS BUT NOT THE CHCAGO VICTIMS THAT DIED BY THE DOZENS THAT SAME WEEKEND…I COMPLAIN WHEN A POLICE OFFICER PANICS AND STARTS HUNTING ME AS SOON AS HE LOOKS IN MY CAR AND SEES A BLACK MALE…I COMPLAIN WHEN I SEE A BLACK PREZ HELP EVERY RACE SPECIFICALLY EXCEPT BLACKS SPECIFICALLY…I COMPLAIN WHEN FKBOYS LIKE U STAND UP FOR THE ATROCITIES THAT ARE COMMITED AGAINST PEOPLE THAT ARE CURSED TO B BORN POOR IN THE GHETTO….I COMPLAIN WHEN PEOPLE LIKE YOU STATE THAT ITS EASY FOR GHETTO BLACKS TO ACHIEVE,GET JOBS,AND BE EDUCATED WHEN IN ACTUALITY SOCIETY HATES US..EACH AND EVERY ATTEMPT THAT A BLACK MALE FROM THE GHETTO THAT IS PROUD OF THE GHETTO MAKES IN AN ATTEMPT TO SAVE HIMSELF OR HIS PEOPLE WILL BE MET WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE,STARTING WITH OUR OWN PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE HOUSE WITH THEIR MASTER.FACT.

    • what's a "house nigga" in this instance? And, would it be better to be a "field nigga?"

    • @Sosa SharkEnt Ceo very well put… Can't count on the goverment or these supposed black leaders, we have to come together to do it for ourselves.

  65. The Ledbetter Act support black women and DADT along with supporting same sex marriage helped the black gay and LGBT community as well. The president supported black farmers and HBCUs and has done what he could politically to lift everyone, blacks included. Tavis remains pissed that the president did not appear to kiss his ring as his black conference and Dr. West still awaits a personal invite to the White House for him and his mother. If you wanted the president to create a black WPA then you wanted a one term presidency. Or, as the Limbaugh cultist and obviously Tavis and Cornell have you believing, you feel entitled to something just because you are bloack. How sad.

  66. To say that "Black People" were tricked, makes you about as racist as the right wing talk machine that says we only voted for President Obama because he's Black. Like we can't look at the issues, social and historical context and make a choice about the best course of action. Your statement implies that we are stupid and can't make our own choices. Just because we understand the political sensitivities faced by the first Black President and the institutional racisim he faces from Congress, The Senate, The Tea Party, Military Officers and the U.S. Public at large, and didn't choose to pile on The President doesn't mean we are "fooled".

    • THERE ARE SOME BLACK FOLKS THAT DID, AS THERE WERE EVEN MORE WHITE FOLKS WHO VOTED FOR ROMNEY BECAUSE HES WHITE.

    • Last time I checked there are less than 2% Blacks in States like Maine, Oregon, Iowa, Wisconsin. Maybe the White people were tricked too!

    • @William Wharton – Right!!! Hell we all tricked. Well good, glad I was tricked then – Wrong-ney would had pushed us back 50 years, especially women. the author of this text couldn't think of anything else to write and drunk some "Hator"rade to get her check this week. The author is Weak!!!! Come again please

    • Wayne NorBe'rt Hazzard

@William Wharton. WELL SAID Sir. Love your "why we can't look at the issues…" and "didn't choose to pile on the President". Your thoughts are on point and the articulation great to hear.

  67. The problem is that far too many of our other established Black voices gave far too much power to the voices of Sharpton and Dyson when there were other voices that could have been lifted up. Lost in all this Sharpton, Dyson, Tavis debate were lesser known Black voices like myself and others across the country who were quietly working with The National Constituent Outreach office of The White House and felt absolutely snubbed when we could not get any of our established national Black voices to offer ANY credibility at all to our victory in challenging the administration to develop a dedicated website for Black people to know where they could find reports and agenda and then we asked for specific Black agenda as it relates to the jobs bill and that was done as well and could have been mobilized around, but instead of lifting up lesser known voices and victories and after almost a year of the new website and Black Jobs Bill Agenda being posted, its a secret for we are still focusing on Sharpton and Dyson. Lift up new voices http://www.whitehouse.gov/africanamericans.

    • Its not to late, keep pushing Mark. Keep sowing in the Cause, it will grow.

    • Irvin, thank you for your kind words and I will. As I have told people like Yvette Carnell, Dr. Boyce Watkins and others that I too have been a veteran activist of over 40 years, also having spent years as a former national staff member to the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr, was one of the first community organizers who worked with the community organizer Obama when he first came to Chicago, first youth talk show host on Chicago's legendary Black station WVON etc and have earned the right to have an independent viewpoint worth hearing but its a work in progress, but I work now through The National Black Wall Street Movement and you and others can stay connected on Facebook or directly through http://www.blackwallstreetchicago.com or http://www.blackwallstreet.org Thanks again

    • You don't need no one to lift up your voice. Leaders never in history waited for a platform to speak. Black successful leaders have always created their own recognition with something the people found beneficial in their speaking. Complaining about someone else has always appeared as a copout for having nothing relevant to say.

Consider discussing what's going on now to inform & update the community like physical cliff. You got to stay up to date for future planning.

    • Rodney Dangerfield ~ NO RESPECT is growing with Travis Smiley & his crew. Black people voted their choice twice & Travis Smiley is still an outcast on the wrong side of Black History.

  68. the real person obama used to pimp black folks was Tom Joyner. Obama actually went on Tom Joyner saying he can't talk about no black folks and issues.

  69. President Obama said that he would be the President for all america, and now you want him to be president just for black america. I totally disagree with you. Sharpton and Dyson only tried to put out the correct information when Romney and his staff were lying. They never put up any platform for Obama themselves, only showed contrast between Obama and Romney. Where were you and your writing while all of this were going on? Why now you want to put out information? Would you have been more satisfied if Romney had won? Do you think you would have been excluded from that 47%? Be real! Obama is the president for the people and judging from the popular votes and the electoral votes he is president by the people. Now about the mass incarceration, I have worked in that environment as a jail administrator and have come to the realization that if you can't do the time then don't do the crime.

    • Tell it Bobby, tell it. I have at least 11 members in my family in Corrections, but mostly Police Officers, and you are right about doing the time, secondly they wouldn't be there if they did what good Brothers do every day, get up off that butt and get a job. Wouldn't have time to do stupid crap.

    • Thank you Bobby my se.timents exactly at what point will black people stop placing blame and so things for themselves?, and exactly what is the potus suppose to do for "black" people? And when are black people going to stop committing crimes and doing dumb stuff and then get mad when they are locked up this is why black america will always tjjnk in such a way because peopke always want to place blame be a responsible citizen and be accountable for you actions as well as your destiny!

    • Thank you Bobby. Now to the author: I am so over the "What about me?" yammering from ALL the groups (gays, blacks, latinos, midgets, etc) Sure, I haven't been happy with everything he's done. that's to be expected. but I'll be damned if I look at ALL this man has to face from Congress alone and then petulantly demand, "HELP ME, My nigga!" I didn't think we elected The black president. I thought we elected a president, who happens to be black, but who works for EVERYBODY. Also, the silly, prepubescent name calling of Sharpton and Dyson seemed a bit much and probably did more to discredit whatever point you were trying to make. And what point WERE you trying to make? Because in the end you came back to basically, "we gotta look out for ourselves" Which leads me to believe that you didn't really have an issue. You just wanted someone to hear you complain.

    • I totally agree with you with regard to everything but incarceration. I believe in taking responsibilty for your action. However, it seems as though the prison system is more of a big business rather than a rehabiltation process to put folks back into the mainstream. It becomes a concern to me when we have 12% of the US population black and over half in the prison system. I think there is alot of apathy in the Black community which is why the folks in charge get away, also money does play a role. Malcolm x once said that the worse thing that the white man did to the black folks was to teach them how to hate themselves, this is playing iitself out in our communities and in the prison system. Thank you for your post

    • First of all Bobby and others, your view on mass incarceration is simplistic at best. I suggest you do more research on the topic because your personal law enforcement experience isn't enough to speak competently about the disparities within the Injustice system. The majority of drug users are white, and the majority of drug related felons are black. According to your logic, black people are obviously making worst decisions therefore they are incarcerated at higher numbers. This is statistically untrue, and furthermore your analysis buys into the white supremacist thought process of black self destruction. I am sure that you are not consciously doing so, but your stance, whether you acknowledge or not, is suspect. Furthermore, even the Obama administration, as obfuscating at it has been on black issues, took steps to lessen the disparity between crack cocaine sentencing and powder cocaine sentencing. So this view that disparities don't exist is wrong on so many levels. Furthermore, I voted for Obama for both terms, but this does not mean that I am in approval of all of his policies (or lack thereof).
The man publicly addressed an array of communities and their issues (i.e. Women, Gays, Latinos), and no one accused him of being the president of any of the aforementioned. It is a low brow way sheeple way of thinking to conclude that African American issues aren't important enough for the POTUS to publicly address. These views are a testament to our oppression levied on us by white supremacist America. When you have virtually no knowledge of African American History and contemporary African American politics one will easily accept second class governance. Other members of the democratic constituency are demanding that their issue be address, while a portion of African American constituents are content with symbolic display of a black family in the white house. Overcoming our oppression is largely contingent on us becoming better educated about our situation. And this doesn't mean having a college degree. I have three degrees, and these degrees are virtually meaningless when it comes to African American history or politics. The white institutions are not going to educate you about your situation period. And furthermore, there are plenty of college educated blacks that are as lost as the poor blacks that they attempt to look down on. So you need to look for alternative ways to become educated, and the more educated are community is about the issues, the less likely we will be to settle for not being attended to by our government.

    • I hear and respect your point of view, however, you obviously missed the point, which is don't sell drugs, don't commit crimes, stay in school, stop having so many babies at a young age, stop killing one another, point blank. Just stop the madness!!!!!

    • Willie Michael Fletcher

Bobby what is worng with the african american community having an agenda, 14.7 % adult unempolyment in th african american community, 50% youth umemployment, the LGBT fought for gay rights, the hispanic community fought for immagration reform. What different does it make for a president to be black or white. We should have specific goals for our community. Cleaver for the congressional black caucus said that President Obama policy have fail, but that's okay because he is black. The congressinal back caucus represent the people not the president. This should be unexceptable for us to except failure because he is black.

    • Give me a brake (and by the way, I voted for Obama, DID I HAVE A CHOICE? And don't give me that crap that I could've chosen to not vote). Give me a brake. President of the Latinos and fags. LOL

    • Bobby please tell it one more time, some people don't seem to understand! I could not have said it better!

    • Bobby please tell it one more time, some people don't seem to understand! I could not have said it better!

    • Bobby please tell it one more time, some people don't seem to understand! I could not have said it better!

    • Bobby please tell it one more time, some people don't seem to understand! I could not have said it better!

    • Bobby please tell it one more time, some people don't seem to understand! I could not have said it better!

  70. Angelene Frederick

Please, maybe you were listening to these two, but I am not sure about the rest of Black America. neither of these men represent me and many other blacks I know. Sharpton is irrelevant and the media continues to try to may the assertions that these men speak for blacks and they don't! Just like it is a new day in America, it is a new day for those that pretend they are fighting for us. You know what Obama can do to help me as a black woman with a family? Ensure that there are jobs for black people, white people, latino people, all people; this will help me tremendously! I turn the TV, turn off the radio, walk away when Sharpton is going to give a message, like the day I was voting. I don't have time for foolishness and people who take advantage of others because they share the same skin color. Us blacks and everyone else that elected Obama, elected him to do something for ALL of us; not just blacks. For a moment I thought we were the party of inclusion, reading your article, I can't tell.

    • Mr.Sharpton paid his dues ,I'm 65 years old and i was there, what have done for the black commuityin the few years youve been here on this earth

    • what foolishness is Sharpton giving? before I tuned in, I thought Sharpton was the same camera-chasing, controversy-courting, perm-wearing caricature most of us had learned to hate from the early 90s. After I was forced to watch his show, boy was I shocked. Gone was the bombastic sermon-y rhetoric. It was replaced with sound, cogent articulations of the points of the day. Ok, he does often get a little baptist preacherish, but he's good. and he doesn't speak out JUST for blacks. From gays, latinos and women, he's a passionate advocate. And to that I say, "Pretty Friggin Awesome!"

  71. I beg to differ…I don't think Rev Al or Dyson lied or tricked anyone! We have a high incarceration rate because hard-headed people. Obama is not the president just for black people. He has to be president for all people. Same way that you are saying that black people were tricked by these guys what is the reason those that are in jail are in jail for? Is it because they followed behind somebody? They didn't have a mind of their own…instead of being a leader. Tired of this constant criticism that is always being lashed out towards these people trying to help the community….a president who gets constant backlash because one doesn't know that it takes hard work and perseverance to do the positive to survive! Obama is not God…he is a man who is trying his best although he has been given the worst!! Sharpton and Dyson have offered solutions more than I can say about Corny West and Travisty Tavis Smiley!!

    • I agree with you Kim even though I don't agree with Obama's policies.

    • Jokers were going to jail being tricked by themselves more than anything.

    • I don't agree with Kim, we have a high incarceration rates because black communities are targeted for drugs. The same percentage of drugs are being used on white colleges campuses and white communities but drug task force only focuses on black areas. It don't make since for black people to represent only 12% of the U.S. but 50% of the prison population because of hard-headedness. Saying that more black people are "hard-headed" that's something racist people say.

    • Everyone makes bad choices but, no one can make a person use or sell drugs. We know more blacks go to jail more than whites. So, blacks need to stay out of that darkness because they know if they get, caught…. It's most likely jail time.

    • I am sick of those of us who are African decent complaining about everything but doing nothing about anything. 1. Name me one African County that will take you? 2. Name one African country you will pull up roots and move to now? 3. Tell me what you would do it you were elected President of the USA? 4. Tell me how you would solve the Debt crisis and where would you get the money from? 5. Tell me how you handle the immigration problem? What method would you use to stop Black boys from using drug? What method would you use to stop nasty old men from get young girl pregnant? What method would you use to get parent to come to parent – teachers conferences? What method would you use to get Black people to clean up their environment? Stop using the bathroom out of your mouth. Get up and work with anyone who is willing to work.

    • Laurenz Peace, just because someone brings you drugs to sell to your own people, doesn't mean you have to sell it. Stop blaming others for bad choices, its disgusting that a black man would even sell drugs to him own people. Wake up folks.

    • Christine you can't read I never blamed anyone for drugs. I said all races use the same amount of drugs but black people are mostly targeted

    • ITS DISGUSTING THAT SUMONE WUD BUY DRUGS FROM MOST LIKELY AN UNEDUCATED,HELPLESS CHILD THAT IS ONLY TRYING TO MAKE ENDS MEET AND FEED HIS CHILD FOR LACK OF A BETTER OPPORTUNITY.MOST DRUG SELLERS ARE LOW LEVEL SUFFERERS.MOST DRUG USERS ARE ACTUALLY NOT EVEN FROM THE COMMUNITIES THAT THEY HELP DESTROY.JUNKIES COME FROM SUBURBAN WHITE AMERIKKKA TO BLACK COMMUNITIES TO GET HIGH WITHOUT IT MAKING THEIR SUBURBAN LIFE DIRTY.HAPPENS EVERYDAY..ITS DISGUSTING THAT BLACK PEOPLE WHO ARE BLESSED ENOUGH TO WORK FOR ONE GOOD WHITE PERSON AT VERIZON WIRELESS ARE STUPID ENUFF TO THINK ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE GOOD PEOPLE AND THAT THE REST OF US BLACK PEOPLE MUST NOT WANT TO ESCAPE THE NIGHTMARE CALLED THE HOOD…..BRAINWASHED….TFOH…

    • Can't be tricked by drugs if you refuse to do and sell drugs. ain't no tricks, just stupid people doing studpid stuff – quit taking the carrot. Just bc the carrot is dangling doesn't mean you have to be the one to take it then blame everyone else bc you got caught. If you now they will give you more time bc you are black then don't do it dummy… Wow

    • Sosa, not all white people are good, and that is not the point. The point is that selling drugs is disgusting, especially when your customers are people in your own community. I don't give a hoot who white folks buy their drugs from. And yes I am blessed to work for Verizon, however, I also put myself in the position to be offered the job, B.A. degree, no criminal record, knows how to dress and speak appropriately. We need to stop making excuses and get it together.

    • @Laurenz Peace….we can be our own worst enemy. You and I have different viewpoints…we can agree to disagree! But…me saying the word "hard-headed" is not something a racist would say!! And f.y.i…..I am far from a racist!!

    • The white man is placing drugs, guns and gangs in our communities…to create a violence environment and genocide of Black folk….

  72. Wow Yvette Carnell, this-was-heavy….especially this part:

"To put it plainly, the black community got screwed by trusting two men who were never honest brokers in the political game they were playing. These men selfishly took advantage of their proximity to power, and successfully used it as leverage for their personal brands, at the expense of the black community at large.

Listen black people: Nobody cares about us. Not even the people who were hired to care about us care about us. My advice? F*ck ‘em. And I don’t just mean f*ck ‘em right now, I mean f*ck ‘em forever."

I leave it to all people of color to think critically about the words coming out of the mouths of public figures, no matter who they are. We can't get pimped in the second term.

    • Never deal with the issues just attack cult of personality. Why you waste time fighting West&Smiley vs. Sharpton &Dyson i'll be fight to keep programs that help the poor folks.

    • Getting the masses to abandon putting their hope and faith in those appointed as overseers and a form of social control is worthwhile IMO. It is about planting seeds that may not flower for some time yet but its a start to deprogramming them.

    • LOL. This piece was childish and hysterical.

    • If MSNBC, CNN and Current TV offered Cornel West, Tavis Smiley and Dr. Boyce a tv show they wouldn't be talking.

    • If MSNBC, CNN and Current TV offered Cornel West, Tavis Smiley and Dr. Boyce a tv show they wouldn't be talking.

    • These people are reverse black Tea Partiers. Extreme, loud, clueless and WRONG!

    • Yvette can you give us a list of the people who are honest brokers in the political game?

Also a list of those who do not, have not and will not take advantage of their proximity to power, and successfully used it as leverage for their personal brands?

      Thanks ahead of time…

    • I'll read this later.

    • Cornel West is mad at the addministration and Tavis Smiley is a tag along looking for relevancy. They were both out of order during this entire campaign and they are using their audience as a venue to remain sour about the lack of attention they have both recieved following the President's election!

    • Good for Them go Al and Eric!

    • West and Smiley are starting to sound more …and more like Donald Trump everyday Serious haters!

    • This is a case of improper expectations. Smh

    • West and Smiley are sounding More like Donald Trump Every day! Some Serious Haters!!! GO AL and Dyson…DO YOUR THING! Good for YOU!

    • So what this is ridulous non-sense!

    • Yvette, could you repeat that in English?

    • RC she could repeat it in several languages… it wouldnt be any more useful to the conversation. How about she go back to the pages where public intellectualism is defined as measure Dr. West and Mr. Smiley under those circumstances… They have taken a more harmful approach to the Black community during this past election than Dr. Dyson or Smiley.

    • ^^^^^What MG said.

    • Uh OooOooo Dyson is sitting in for Martin Bashir today, LOOKS LIKE MSNBC WANNA GIVE DYSON A CHANCE TO RESPOND TO WEST AND SMILEY…

    • To say that "Black People" were tricked, makes you about as racist as the right wing talk machine that says we only voted for President Obama because he's Black.

    • Sounds like nothing but jealousy and envy in my opinion, and it looks like dr. Watkins is right with her.

    • The piece is full of vitriol and resentment. I understand that we want the President to "lower the bucket" and help us. But Dyson and Sharpton are both outspoken leaders for our race. I know I was not tricked; people have jobs to do. I believe we need an agenda that we can get the Presidents attention. Should he do more for black America-yes, but its up to us to push our agenda.

    • B.S, the Black Community has screwed ITSELF. Stop it. AYou are supposed to ne a Journalist, not a sensationist, like Rush Limbaugh and others of that ilk. You, Tavis, Cornell West take away from what you ALL are supposed to do. your ALLL should be ashaned of trying to taint President Obama. Shame on all of you. Where were you during the G.W. Bush years? non-existant. STOP CRYING NOW.I hate all of you with a passion, sadly you Dr. Boyce are doing what Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, etc are doing.
In the alledged disguise of lookin out for US.

    • I don't need a "Black leader". I have my own voice, and possess the courage to use it. Al Sharpton, Michael Eric Dyson, Tavis Smiley, or any other these public figures have no standing in my life. I have been an activist for more than forty years, often fighting alone. I have been jailed, threatened by white supremists and even betrayed by other African-Americans. I have never relied on anyone else to fight my battles. As the civil rights avtivist Ella Baker said, "Strong people don't need strong leaders.

  73. It's not potus fault that we have a high incarceration rate..I strongly disagree

    • i disagree with that as well!!!!

    • This article is not blaming the POTUS for a high incarceration rate. Its just saying that so called Black leaders are not concerned with the Black community.

    • its not potus fault that gay ppl couldnt get married much easier, but he took care of that.its not the potus fault that the rich jewish bankers on wall street got greedy and cost the country trillions, but he took care of that.its not the potus fault that children born in amerikkka were considered illegal bcuz of their parents status, but he took care of that.black ghettoes are suffocating under 42.5 percent unemployment.he needs to take care of that.black neighborhoods are being flooded with illegal weapons by non black, rich males.he needs to take care of that.black women are being subjected to watching their sons and fathers be denied a right to provide for them.potus needs to adress these matters.black ppl have not overcome just because he got elected.we need him to directly adress our plight,as he has with more socially (white) acceptible constituents.

    • No it is not his fault, re-enslavement of Black people did not start with him, it started right after the end of the Civil War and dramatically increased under the Nixon Administration and a Democratic controlled Congress. However, the entity known as the Obama administration has slated 4 new federal prisons to open in 2013 to lock up more non-violent self medicating victims and those lacking job opportunities who doing all they know how to do, all they have been programmed to do to survive.

    • @Sosa SharkEnt Ceo Why don't you do something about your long list of complaints, what about the governor of your state he/she getting paid to do a job, in that state. You say the black neighborhoods are being flooded with illegal weapons who do you think bringing them into the black community? you idiots need to stop and think about what you are saying. Everything you want Obama, to do were there doing Bush Jr. term as president, you never open your mouth. As far as jobs they are out there black don't want those jobs and will not return to school to get a real job that's paying good money. Nothing, and i mean Nothing going to land in your hands if you're not willing to help youself.

    • Laurenz Peace , there are a plethora of programs offered in the black community designed to help us progress in life, especially educational programs. In SC the school offer free tutoring for minority kids, and you know what they parents don't even drop the kids off, we have positive programs for young girls, to prevent teenage pregnancy and they parents don't take them, programs to help young boys stay in school and off the streets, and the parents don't take them, so the blame belongs with the home not the President, or black leaders.

    • Altha Cutright I AM THE SON OF A BLACK PANTHER,MY NEGATIVE OPINION TOWARDS CAPITOLIST AMERIKKKAN SOCIETY BEGAN LONG B4 BUSH2 OR OBAMA WERE ELECTED.TO CALL UR OWN KIND AN IDIOT IS VERY SELF LIMITING.FOR ALL U KNOW I MAY POSESS AN IQ OF A BORDERLINE GENIUS OR MORE..AND AS A MATTER OF FACT I HAVE PERSONALLY WITNESSED WHITE RACIST GUNDEALERS PEDDLE GUNS TO PEOPLE WITHOUT GUN LICENSES 2 MINUTES AWAY FROM THE SAME NEIGHBORHOODS MY NEPHEWS N NIECES LIVE IN..IF THE GUN SHOW DOESNT OPERATE,,LESS GUNS MAKE IT INTO SAID COMMUNITY.BTW I LIVE IN TENNESSEE,THEEEE BIRTHPLACE OF NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST AND HIS BRAINCHILD,THE KKK..THERE ARE NO JOBS FOR YOUNG BLACK MALES IN ABUNDANCE HERE,WHETHER WE WANT TO WORK OR NOT..WHAT THERE SHOULD BE IS A NETWORK OF BLACK PEOPLE THAT WILL TEACH YOUNG BLACK PEOPLE TO OWN BUSINESSES,,AND THERE IS NOTHING OF THE SORT IN MY TOWN..THERE SHOULD BE A STRONG SHOWING BY THE NAACP IN MY CITY,INSTEAD THERE IS A ONE WINDOW SHACK IN A MINI MALL THAT THE NAACP OCCUPIES,,AND IF UR NOT BLACK BOULE'/MIDDLECLASS/NAACPMEMBER THEY ARE NOT HELPING YOU…YOU SOUND EXACTLY LIKE YOUR OPPRESSOR,,STEREOTYPING YOUR OWN KIND..THE BOOK OF TIMOTHY STATES "DESPISE NOT THY YOUTH"…TAKE HEED SISTER,,SOME PEOPLE ARE MISEDUCATED,,AND DUMB ENOUGH TO THINK THAT SMOKIN A JOINT AND WEARIN A DAISHIKI MAKES U ETHNIC LMBAO _STRAIGHT FACE GTFOH

    • Altha Cutright AND ANOTHER THING,,FAM,,I AM ENCOURAGING YOUNG MURDERERS TO PUT DOWN GUNS AND GET ENROLLED IN ATUO-DIESEL COLLEGE,BARBER COLLEGE,TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY,,ETC..I AM RAISING MY CHILDREN TH EBEST WAY I KNOW HOW IN ONE OF THE MOST RACIALLY OPRESSIVE STATES IN THIS COUNTRY,,I AM A HARDWORKING SMALL BUISNESS OWNER THAT RARELY MAKES ANY PROFIT WHATSOEVER,,THE QUESTION IS,,WHAT ARE YOOOUUUU DOING TO HELP UR KIND'S CAUSE?? IDK IF U REALIZE IT OR NOT,,BUT BEFORE THEIR PRESTIGIOUS TITLES AS BLACK LEADERS,,MLK WAS A WOMANIZING MONEYMAKER AND MALCOLM X WAS A HOUSEBURGLAR/PIMP..U NEED TO LEARN TO EMPATHIZE WITH THE BLACK KINGS OF YOUR RACE.SEE US NOT IN THE LIGHT OF THE RACIST WHITE MEDIA,BUT THE WAY ONES MOTHER VIEWS HER SON THAT IS STRUGGLING TO GAIN HIS BALANCE RIDING A BIKE.SMH…..SMH AT THE GALL OF BLACK PEOPLE,AS IF WE CAN #AFFORD TO BE DIVISIVE.

    • He only SPOKE in support of Gay marriage. He didn't DO anything. Yet he as already spoken and SUPPORTED many issues that affect blacks and other Americans who are traditionally overlooked. Yet some of you seem to HATE him. Could he have done more? I guess so. Should we hold him accountable? Of course!! But this article and many others like it are just plain ignorant and hateful. I don't understand the personal attacks and animosity. I don't understand the venom behind the attacks. And if anyone says that the attacks are not personal, you must not know what personal means

    • Debbie Faircloth Carter

Sosa SharkEnt Ceo Did you know that most of the time lately if a white person can't pay their power bill, their power gets turned off. If they run out of food and can't afford any, the govt. won't help. If they can't pay their rent they have to leave. No govt. help. If they can't afford insurance and get sick, no govt. help. We have to count on friends, relatives or strangers until we can do better. We have never had a safety net from the govt. I guess that's why we don't even expect it and struggle to do things on our own even when times are horrible.

  74. I agree with this comment 100%.

  75. I am going to agree. At first I thought we (Blacks) should let him make it the first term because that would look a little suspect, and he did do something for the Hispanics wit the dream act and he did repeal Don't ask don't tell for the LGBT community, but what has he done specifically for the black community. We still have the highest rates of incarceration. We still have blighted communities and we still are some of his biggest supporters. We fought of those who were against him. Our churches stretched out hands to him and prayed over him to lead this country. When are we going to get something back for our investment in him.

    • @Leonard Baugh You damn n—— make me sick some of you i am total ashame of You idiots always want someone to do something for you and you're not willing to do a damn thing for yourself. Ask yourself did Obama put Black men in prison? we have the highest rate of incarceration, as much as our blacks or doing stealing, killing each-other for drugs, robbing people of everything they have work so hard for. You talk about Obama, making thing right for the blacks community, you get off your black ass and do something for your-own community don't wait on someone to do it for you.

    • Ms. Altha. You don't know me and I would not disrespect you by calling you out of your name. I work. I raised my children right. Trust me I have more conservative values than I do liberal. It would take a blind person not to see the disparity in the drug laws that target those of the black community. It would take a blind man not to see the Prison industrial complex working hand in hand with the judicial system to keep blacks and Hispanics in jail. It would take a blind man not to see that the Judicial system is designed to disenfranchise these very same men who have paid there debt to society by denying them the right to vote, making it hard for them to get jobs when they finish there sentences and try to re-enter society. Ms. Altha you do not know me enough to know what I do or don't do for my community. Trust me I am very active in my community, and local government with these same people in mind. Or would you rather them come home to nothing and make the same mistakes? Sometimes it's not about the bling. Sometimes it is about survival and putting food on the table. I wonder what do you do for your community instead of sit on your ass and complain about people who do. Ms. Altha I also served my country so that you have the right to try and ridicule me. I got the stripes and scars to prove it. If Gays can ask The President to do something about Don't ask don't tell and recognizing civil unions, If Hispanics can ask the President for the Dream Act Then damn well best believe I , and many others are going to ask him about the disparity of the drug laws, about the poverty of the inner-cities and bringing jobs there and whatever it takes to lift our people up instead of sitting on my fat ass like you and complain about people who are willing to stand up for their people.

    • Law enforced by another branch of government.

    • @ leonard Baugh, you don't have to explain yourself to her. She is one of those emotional Obama Cult following people. She probably goes to Creflo dollars church and worship him too! It is time we become more conservative. Dems have done nothing but turned our people into pigeons waiting for their feed. The prison Industrial system is here dead smack in our face and he has the platform to put it on the agenda. !! He is from Chicago and i'm sure he has seen the bloodshed and mayhem in that city. Obama…. at least acknowledge it. we lock up more people than China! for profit!

    • This so-called article is trash. First of all you must have been in a damn coma for the last four years because no matter what the President did, the party of NO did just that, at EVERY turn, on Election night 2008 after he won the Presidency, what did the bigots Boehner, McConnell, company do? did they go on nation TV to congradulate Barack Obama, and say they look forward to working with him????/ Hell no, the first thing out of their mouths was :our FIRST priority is to ensure Barack Obama is a one-term President", verbatim. Guess they forgot it is the "voters" who decide. Secondly, he is the President of "the" United States, not Black America. And did you even stop to think. that in a lot of the policies he wanted to enact would help in minority Communities. Last but not least we need to help "ourselves", and we can't even do that, pull your head out of the sand. Look at what is happening all across this Country, Gun violence, murders, fights, over trivial crap. Lazy people who won't get up off their ass and get a job, robbing their neighbors. It's sickening. As far as I am concerned West and Tavis can go to hell. All they do is bash the President, if they know so god damn much, where are their ideas to help, better yet, what are they actually "doing". Hell, Steve Harvey uses his money and gives back with programs that benefit us, yet all I hear are haters calling him all kinds of names. So crawl back into your Crab Pot because I'm not going with you.

    • Leonard Baugh Well done in your response to Altha. You see what you see there is a typical Obamabot. All emotions, no thinking. Their biggest tell tale signal is name calling. The fact that Obama can SPECIFICALLY reward Hispanics and homosexuals, yet the Obamabot will STILL tell you that we Blacks are wrong for asking because "he must be President for all…" shows you that the sickness is terminal.

    • I keep hearing this echo that President Obama didn't do anything for the Black Community. What specifically did he not do, that he should have done? The Affordable Care Act will provide millions of Black folk with health care they previously could not afford! My two jobs working daughter being one of those. It will cover pre-existing conditions, which will benefit my oldest daughter who suffers from a neurological disease which prevent us from getting health care before Obamacare. How many black students will benefit from Obama's support for reducing the interest rate on student loans? Thousands? Millions? How many blacks would have been left with no unemployment compensation if the President didn't cut a deal on extending the Bush taxes? Millions? Did not this president attempt to push for a comprehensive jobs bill (twice) that was rejected by the House republicans? How come Travis and Cornell haven't attacked them with the same gusto they have attacked the President? I do believe that President Obama compromise too much in his first term and there are some things he can improve on and i think he realizes this. But, please consider the enormity of the pressure on this first Black president in perhaps the most racist and toxic political environment in our nation's history. The white right was stunned by Obama's victory, and they instantly saw the possible end of white male rule in this country. So, there first priority before Obama uttered a word of policy was to destroy his presidency and his legacy! Why should we as a people contribute to that? I never thought I would live to see a Black president in this country. We may never see it again! So, why be like a bunch of crabs in a basket (young folk won't understand that comment). If we have problems with this President why not seek an audience with him through your elected officials or his own administration. He is more accessible (via the internet and social media) than any President in modern history. Why don't we all just turn down the volume a bit and allow for a little compassion and understanding about the most difficult job in the world–for anyone–and double that for a Black man! I still feel it is important to hold the President accountable–let's just be reasonable about it!

    • Tariq It's not about being crabs in a basket, and you yourself said you didn't think it was going to happen, but I know somewhere in the back of your mind you had wished that a black President come along and make some sweeping changes and he did. We kept the volume down when he repealed Don't ask don't tell for the LGBT community and recognized civil unions. We kept the volume down when he signed the dream act for the Hispanics. We kept the volume down his whole first term. A s long as there is the Prison industrial complex and disparate judicial laws then young African Americans will suffer from the long term effects of committing non-violent crimes such as not being able to vote. Not being able to take advantage of Grants and student loans to go to school. (Most of the kids that are being caught with that joint are already students.I live in a college town and see it often.) We may be able to change the behavior of some of these kids but we can't change the laws. In Colorado now you will see a change in the cases of drug crimes. They will no longer be handing down felony sentences for a joint.

    • Altha Cutright Bravo! I was going to comment, but you said it best!

    • Leonard, seriously, what would you have him do about the problems you mentioned? Gays and latinos had and have issues of civil rights violations that needed to be addressed and could be handled with the passing of a few laws. But what can be done for blacks in the same way?

    • repeal many of the disparate drug laws. Just by doing that many who have been affected by them and having had to live years under them have already changed their ways, but in order to be a part of society a person must also have a voice and chance to form this society and sometimes the only voice is to be able to vote.As it stands right now the Prison industrial complex works hand in hand with the judicial system. The Prison industry says "Do not improve our society lest we lose our business." It is the closest thing to slave labor. Did you know that companies are outsourcing technical call center jobs to prisons for the cheap labor. The same kind of jobs that you will have to pass a background check on in regular society. Jobs that pay $10 and up an hour they pay prisoners pennies to perform saying they are teaching them valuable skills for when they are released. No it's not happening because those same jobs conduct background checks. I said that twice so that it will sink in. I will say no more. read about all the different industries this new slave labor has it's hands in and it's all Federal and private prisons that are doing it. Screw the "New Jim Crow" This is slavery all over again. http://www.unicor.gov/

Screw the "New Jim Crow" This is slavery all over again. http://www.unicor.gov/ Leader of Federal Prison industries. In the state of Louisiana many of the Prisons are privately owned. When a private entity owns a prison it is no longer about corrections or rehabilitation. It is about profits. Prisons are America's new sweatshop. America's new China. A private owned prison cannot make money without it's number one product. warm bodies, and it's not a lot of white bodies either that they are filling their beds with.

    • @Leonard, so exactly what do you want? Because technically as black folks we have a lot, remember civil rights, desegregation, voting rights, housing laws, etc. So what else do we need/want?

    • Christine optimally it would be being treated equal under the constitution. If only that were true then you wouldn't need things like the Civil rights Bill, or affirmative action, desegregation, but that's not the world that we live in now is it? As we have seen this last election That the Republican Party has been reduced to it's last common denominator. Angry Old White Men. The white establishment. Forget about it ever being the party of Lincoln, the party of Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth . They weren't able to by the Presidency, but they still can buy judges and that is what they are doing to keep their private prisons full. Yes you are right. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, but in many other countries non violent crimes amount to fines that are no more than a traffic ticket and here in America lives are ruined.Again I say when Prisons are privately owned it is no longer about rehabilitation. They just want their beds filled. Your tax dollars go to feeding and housing these "Criminals" and they owners make huge profits outsourcing prison labor. When a person gets out his future already looks bleak because now he has a record. It's hard for him to get a job, Housing is denied him/her.Pretty much the only thing they can do to survive is what got them in trouble in the first place, and the prisons have revolving doors. Change the Laws. Change the Federal Laws. That's what the President can do.

    • Kinfolk (Leonard) I hear you saying how the system is set up so that released criminals have little to no options once they're released but to go out and be criminals again. But our backgrounds are intertwined. I know, and you know, a criminal act can only follow a decision by someone to do that deed. You and I both made the decisions that no matter how rough or tough these streets or this economy gets, we will not do the crime, because of the consequences that are sure to follow. Now you and I have sense, but I would never picture either of us as the sharpest pencils or the brightest crayons in the box. So if we KNOW better and choose not to do certain things, don't every other man (or woman) have the common sense to make that same decision? Yeah things are or can be rough. But that is with a vote. To go out and perform nefarious acts which I know will strip me of my rights and liberties?
All I'm saying is that 99.99% of the ones incarcerated that are guilty, made that conscious decision to risk it all and commit the crime. It's like gambling, like rolling dice, with your rights as the pot to win or lose. I have a hard time being sympathetic to those. (And Lord knows I don't think I'm better than anyone, including those that are or have been incarcerated.)
All that to say- Whoever don't want to be a part of the modern day slave labor, don't go where you know there is a trap that has been laid out for you.

    • Altha Cutright …wow..well said…Obama doesn't care about Black America. He is an elitist. The social progressives of the left have almost destroyed Black America. It is genocide on an epic level. Abortion and drugs and crime have taken a huge toll on Black males. The left wants to control Blacks and does not want to liberate them. Public enemy #1 to the left is a happily married Black family man with a concealed weapons permit and a job! Wake up Black America! The left is wiping you out!

    • President Obama was not elected to fix the Black Community. The Black community needs to fix itself. We have failed our children as a whole and have forgotten what the civil rights movement was about.

    • Wayne NorBe'rt Hazzard

Leonard Baugh THANK YOU. I hope the many Ms Altha's out there would just take the time to read your response. Simply BRILLIANT!
