What's Happening In Your World

Yvette Carnell: Jamie Foxx, Are Your Daughters Less Talented Because They’re Less Black?

by Yvette Carnell

Jamie Foxx is a talented entertainer, and because of that, I’ll eventually get around to watching DJango Unchained. What  I won’t do is join in the chorus of black people jamie foxx and daughterAmening Jamie’s “Black people are the most talented people in the world” comment.

‘Black people are the most talented people in the world. I, it’s, I can’t explain it,’ Foxx said at the NAACP Image Awards. ‘You can’t sit in this room and not watch Gladys Knight sing and go like, “Golly, what in the world?”’

I get where Foxx was trying to go, I think. Based on the context, it seems to me that Foxx was trying to express how, based on the Black  Experience, black people are more sensitive to certain impulses, and how we tend to mold and refine those increased sensitivities until they become perfect tools for our art. That’s what he meant. That’s true. But what he said was that we’re the most talented people in the world. That’s a lie.

That comment by Foxx, which takes one race, black people,  and sets it high above others,  based solely on sketchy anecdotal evidence and vague preferences, is vexing because it brings to mind other similar pronouncements made by blacks, like  how we all  “came from kings and queens.” Truth is,  some of us come from kings and queens, while others of us derive our DNA from spear chuckers, slave traders, and common crooks. Some of us are the descendants of philosophers, mathematicians, and activists as well, but the honest truth is none of us are just one thing. We’re all descendants of  different classes  of people, with varied achievements and abilities.

As black people, we are no better – and certainly no worse – than any other race in terms of our humanity,  even though we do have certain evolutionary differences based on our environment, which are expressed through our adaptations (or lack thereof).

Jamie Foxx should be especially careful with these sort of boastful race based declarations considering that he has mixed race children. I’m sure Mr. Foxx would lash out at anyone who implied that his daughters are less talented just because they are less black than their father, and rightfully so.

Problem is, when you make the argument that Foxx is making, then it’s hard to rebut the flip side of that very same argument. If Foxx says blacks are the most talented, then what do you say when someone, as Richard Herrnstein did in his book  The Bell Curve, says that blacks are less intelligent than whites? Either you want equality or you don’t. You can’t have it both ways.

  3. Correction: so long as they’re not trying to take anything away from me, then I might have something negative to say.

  4. @People
What’s wrong with Blacks saying they come from kings and queens? Every man wants to feel like a king and every woman wants to feel like a queen. Big deal, there were kings and queens in every race. What’s wrong with Jamie showing a little Black pride and having an opinion. Just bc you admire your people’s talent doesn’t mean you have to be attacking anyone else, it’s personal, so what. Why does everything that comes out of a Black persons’ mouth have to be some kind of slug fest with Black people belittling each other over semantics. It’s like if you make one little comment you have to justify your whole existence and explain your whole life story. It’s a lot of pressure to carry around the weight of your whole entire race from the beginning of time because you expressed a little pride in your people. Why does that have to be offensive to white people or anybody else. Other races love themselves, they form clubs to celebrate their heritage, etc. Isn’t America supposed to be about competition. Don’t Americans go around talking about this is the greatest country in the world? Does everybody get all upset over that? I feel like people can like what they like. Not everybody has the same taste, so what, as they’re not trying to take away from me, then I might have something negative to say. Why does Jamie’s statement have to be dissected? His statement was a positive statement about Black folk, GOOD!!! As someone said before just about everything in this country is catered to whites and even if all of theM don’t go around saying how much better they think they are, for a lot of them (and some of the Black people that agree with them), it goes with out saying. That’s why it is important for Black children to take pride in who they are. From what we can see in society, being proud to be Black is becoming passé. However, at this moment I am still alive (for how long, nobody knows) so can’t I have a little inspiration as I make my way through this jungle of life as people are throwing darts at me on a constant basis? Can someone please give us a freaking break?

  6. Black is the dominant race and color. Every race of people evolved from the Asiatic Blackman. Many of as from your post are the true measure if “Uncle Toms”, don’t want to say or do anything to upset your slave master. Yes, majority of Black people believe in Equality but do we get equality in return. Speak up live strong to my brothers and proud sisters. For the rest of “Toms”, please do the rest of us a favor, go bury your head!

  7. WE HUMANS never cease to amaze me, as we all know JAMIE was probably caught up in the moment of a “GREAT” performance and spoke out of pride and maybe some guilt—and not out of some fake thought of EQUALITY in that sense—-EQUAL to who and what? Make your own EQUALITY and be damned with the rest. PEACE!!!!

  8. In response to Jamie foxx who doesn’t understand his comment, and to Yvette Carnell who doesn’t believe it to be true-
The Key to understanding the statement is MELANIN. Yes, Melanin is a gift, and melanin dominate people are blessed with certain benefits; Such as, but not limited to:
Protection from the UV sunrays (anti-cancer properties)
    Protection from toxins (anti-oxidant properties)
Regulation of our nervous system (That’s what gives Black Basketball Players “Hang Time,” and why White Men can’t Jump). This is not meant to be funny or a racist statement – it has been scientifically proven.

Anti Aging – Anti Wrinkle Properties
Melain is a conductor of electricity (converts the sun’s rays into energy for your body)

Melanin is what gives us our Soul, our connection to nature, or what some might say is our connection to Supreme Source.

But don’t believe me either, do your own due diligence, or in other words LOOK IT UP!

It is time for All people to WAKE UP!

Respectfully submitted for the benefit of all people on the planet.

  10. What is this woman talking about? Who is a descendant if a “spearchucker”? Our history is based on sketchy anecdotal evidence and vague preferences? I’m not saying we are a superior race either but I am not going to place my race below any other race. I don’t understand the self sebasing comments about Black people. Our people. Job one: respect yourself.

  11. It make me sick to see so many black people hating on their own kind. It’s bad enough to have to put up with Dr Boyce’s weak ass BS but to also have to read post after post of black people hating on other black people is ridiculous. We need to get it together.

  12. Yvette Carnell has a certain disdain for black people in general. Pay attention to her articles. She always has something snide to say. Maria Lloyd is just as bad, especially toward black men. I wonder what happened to these women? Of course they will say they are speaking the truth and we don’t want to hear it because the truth hurts. In reality they just use that to be nasty. If you are really trying to uplift somebody, you just shoot from the hip and be truthful. You don’t have to be sarcastic and condescending. As for Jamie Foxx, it was a just a speech at a awards ceremony, it wasn’t the Nobel Prize….geesh

  13. “you will get around to seeing Django”? are you less of a journalist because you hang around with Boyce Watkins?Jamie Foxx has been practicing and perfecting his craft for over 25 years; why don’t you take 25 years and practice your craft then get back to us? Ok?

  14. Common sense is a lot of times much better than all the book learning and letters behind ones name, sometime. Case in point Malcolm X to my knowledge didn’t get degrees from a college or university and Dr. King certainly did. Now to judge each others talent would be apples and oranges, so sister what Jamie Foxx said was a statement and not delving into the intricate breakdown of which your degreed self is trying to accomplish. Crackers all of the time viewed blacks as a race inferior to them and when blacks apologize for white people I wonder why?

  15. We get told every freaking day that we are less than- and when a Black man whether he is derived from a lower caste system from Africa and the slave master or a higher caste system from Africa and the slave master, stands and basically gives a ” shout out” that gets dissected by a person so willing to make sure we give just do to others whose kids have no problem continuing to tell our young ladies and young men that just because of the variation in their ” blackness” they are still less than.
This is similar to my paintings of ” Black” angels and black experience and black people or others seem bothered why my angels are black or why in todays seemingly ” equal” society I do not paint others. These same people have no problem with the 16th Chapel, Andy Warhol or any other non black artist painting from their perpective which is/ was not inclusive of the Black perspective.
In a perfect world, black people (who are actually African and something else whether minutely or greatly diluted with other) will be be equal and not continually have to justify a position or statement or seemingly go overboard with a general statement because he knows industry wise how most really feel about blackness. Perhaps he is speaking loudly to that little black girl or little black boy who see their favorite artist being ok proudly parading around with a non black woman (no decent man would want to claim as his lady). Perhaps Mr. Foxx feels he needs to break though all the negatve to tell these little back boys and girls, they are ok.
When a conductor yells ” all aboard” he is talking to those with tickets. For so long blacks have been thinking they had tickets to the mindset they are less than. If what Mr. Foxx said is not talking to you, its not talkingto you and recognize you do not have the ticket but please do not encourage others who need it not to take that ride as we have all not arrived at the destination of accepting and loving who we are and what you think of me is absolutely non of my business!
    Peace-

  20. Let them defend themselves. Why does a black person who undoubtedly suffered as a result of racism at some point feel the need to jump and defend white people? I read that the blacks on the Ridley plantation protected their master and his property when Nat Turner and his crew came to free them.

  21. Just as Ms. Carnell said, ” you can’t have it both ways”. You shout ‘racism’ when it suits your case, but don’t have any problem making racist comments or spewing you hatred for other races. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If you don’t want to be touted as subhuman with a lack of morals and intelligence, don’t make that pronouncement on other races. Otherwise, that makes you a fork-tongued snake and an idiot.

  22. Geez what ever happened to black pride? I tend to agree ,black folks are the most talented ,we started Jazz,we started Blues,we started the Funk nuff said.

  23. What is amazing to me is how people get in such an uproar over these types of comments made by people in the industry. This is not news but a distraction from what really matters on the worlds stage. Actors are human just like us and have opinions like us. In these days and times “whites would never say something like that”. They do not have to. Visuals speak louder than words. The majority of what we “see” and view on a regular base is the white minority. Consequently, everyone is inundated with their presence making it unnecessary for them to make such statements like Mr. Foxx did.
And I for one do believe for the first time in my life that there are no others like us.

  24. Black people have more inventions and ideas stolen than any other race in America. Who invented the cartoon whoinvented the shoe.manufacturing machine who.was george washington caver.? Dont get it twisted ma’am. Every invention tjat is basic for human life and entertainment came from a black mind accept ah two, maybe….. Bone up on your black history….

  25. This was a very good and balanced assessment — despite the likelihood that Mr. Foxx was caught up in the euphoria of the at the NAACP image awards. The author makes great point that holds him accountable. Why?… because there shouldn’t be a double standard! I’ve seen comments that call the author a ‘hater’. What knee-jerked drivel! Had she written that Mr. Foxx’s success is proof-positive that Blacks are only good for Entertainment and sports, then folk would be calling her a racist and/or hater too. What’s important here is that there’s a rush to protect a Black celebrity without really looking at what was said and thoughtfully understanding the repercussions of the very racism that has us in such a pigeon hole that we can’t see the bigger picture. Ms. Carnell does and I applaud her for that.

  26. This story and people who do not get what he meant is just ignorant! Nobody is perfect when they speak, which everybody who calls themselves an adult should know. Also EVERYone should know that what you mean I’d not always easy to articulate and therefore things do not always come out the way you intended and therefore people may end up taking what you say out of context, as I believe is in this case! You also know that black people who are entertainers have displayed a WHOLE lot of under appreciate talent given their lack of receipt of awards in the past. Especially actors, and I’m not talking about in the past decade! Therefore, the man should be cut some slack, especially from his own people who he seemed to sincerely in HIS opinion feel are VERY talented! How many people get carried away and say “my child is the cutest in the whole world” or say their husband/wife are the best! Who gets mad over that? Only a fool would because its THEIR opinion! You also know they’re likely exaggerating because at the time they’re excited thinking about the person, as seems to be the case when he enjoyed Gladys’s performance!!! Smh! Just think white ppl who like to see us against each other love this kind of stuff, it’s obvious when you see how some of them stalk this forum and put rude and deliberately hateful stuff on it! Maybe Jaime could have worded better, but I cannot criticize the man for his opinion! Nobody is perfect.

  27. I have to agree with Carnell, you can’t have it both ways. If you believe in equality, there is no such thing as superiority based on race instead of individual gifts and efforts.Foxx’s statement is ignorant

  28. Of course apolitically speaking…..It goes without debate

Jamie is absolutely right…..Nobody Nobody can do it like” We” do “It”….. That is just fact….. You ever heard White folks sing gospel that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up ? I rest my case…..

    Any questions?

    • I have no problem with Jaime’s statement. This is tantamount to, say, Arab oil, or German Engineering, or Asian methodological thinking. It is not totally exclusive, but it points up a propensity of certain groups.

  29. It’s obvious you are a descendant of haters, bottom feeders, and riders of coat tails.
Truth is when God made the black child He was showing off!
It’s time we act like it!

  30. Black people are the most talented is just as moronic as the “kings and queens” afrocentrics.
If y’all were kings and queens, how the hell your ancestors get captured and treated like cattle? Did the “commoners” rebel and enslave you kings and queens?

Anyone who agrees with Jamie Foxx’s stupid comment should also agree with the following statement:

Black people may be the most talented people in the world, but they also happen to be the most imbecilic. What other race worships the ignorance of other races the way black people worship yahweh and allah?

    • Your ignorant comment is the same as Jamie Foxx comment. Then you generalize a whole group of people, but have the nerve to throw shade at Jamie!

      • “throw shade”…..Your ignorant hoodrat language is evidence you are one of the morons who kowtow to yahweh/allah

    • Excuse my American, but you sound like a fool. Learn the truth before you speak out and show yourself as an imbecile. Black people and all ethnic groups come from Africa, not necessarily slavery(although my family is directly descended). That is a part of many of our ancestry. And it would stand to reason that people originated from a highly melanin concentrated group. Today there remains a rich heritage where kings and queens “rule”. Not this stuff that has been made up, but real rulers that have gone through Rites of Passage and shown themselves to be worthy of something. Get you facts straight before you write such foolishness. Get a book named Black Women in Antiquity or watch The Lost Kingdoms of Africa by Dr. Gus Casely-Hayford. Maybe you will be more likely to be quiet.
