What's Happening In Your World
by Yvette Carnell I’m all for a good bit of slacktivism, also known as “raising awareness”, ever now and again. It’s easy, and a good idea, to introduce folks to atrocities halfway across the globe that they wouldn’t have been aware of had it not been for your video or blog. But, regarding the Kony 2012 video, there was already a fair amount of attention dedicated to the Ugandan guerrilla rebel group Lord’s Resistance, due partly to President Obama’s decision to send troops there a few months back. And we already have actual Ugandan bloggers who are ready and willing to tell their story. Don’t believe me? Here ya go: Yourblackworld also reported CNN’s interview with an actual Kony victim , so the question becomes; what is this Kony 2012 charity up to? Why does this charity feel the need to co-opt the voices of Ugandans and filter them through the Kony 2012 medium? Well, once you investigate the history of the folks behind the Kony 2012 viral video, it becomes apparent that they’re right wing Christian missionaries, and are functioning in that long and tortured tradition of many African missionaries, best profiled in Achebe’s renowned novel  Things Fall Apart . Here is the head of the Kony 2012 movement, Jason Russell,  in his own words, from a speech at the late Jerry Falwell’s  Liberty University: “A lot of people  fear  Christians, they  fear  Liberty University, they  fear  Invisible Children – because they feel like we have an agenda. They see us and they go, “You want me to sign up for something, you want my money. You want, you want me to believe in your God.”  And it freaks them out .” Uh-huh. If I hadn’t attributed the quote beforehand, you could have just as well ascribed it to Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich, and that makes a lot of since considering that the evangelical right wing in this country has ties to the unrest in Uganda. Remember, it was American right wingers who pushed Ugandans to invoke a law making homosexuality punishable by death. Of course, Uganda lawmakers are getting the bulk of the blame for that wrongheaded legislation, but it was pushed and funded by American right wingers like the Kony 2012 charity heads. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: On issues relating to African affairs, it benefits African Americans to listen to actual Ugandans, Nigerians, Liberians and other black people who actually live on the continent before offering ourselves up as pawns to imperialist players. A cursory Google search could’ve provided us with all the information we needed to form an opinion on Kony and his henchmen. Kony 2012 wasn’t necessary then or now.

Yvette Carnell: The Producers of Kony 2012 Viral Video are Right Wingers, and Can’t be Trusted

I’m all for a good bit of slacktivism, also known as “raising awareness”, ever now and again. It’s easy, and a good idea, to introduce folks to atrocities halfway across the globe that they wouldn’t have been aware of had it not been for your video or blog.

And we already have actual Ugandan bloggers who are ready and willing to tell their story.

  1. THIS BLOG WAS INTENTIONALLY REMOVED FROM ITS NORMAL LOCATION , AND IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE SUBSCRIPTION COMMENTS WE GET IN OUT EMAILS, I HAD TO GOOGLE THIS . Even on black world they are trying to suppress the truth about their covert propaganda Knoy2012 movement which has more to do with OIL the CONGO’S NATURAL RESOURCES. Instead of challenging the imperialists who are responsible for the mayhem in the Congo , they would rather create some false flag “We gonna get the bad guy situation” only to implant their European genocidal selves into the midst of the Congo to steal like they do as missionaries to the natives just before they wiped them all out and took their land , raped their women and profited from their resources.

  2. It is significant that when the KONY2012 video was shown recently in Northern Uganda where Kony and his war criminals were chased from years ago, that the audience who were at first puzzled by this self-promoting money making American/European and his infant son soon became enraged and stoned the screen and stopped the show when they realised he was using their past sufferings to make money. As they said quite correctly, why didn’t he come to them who suffered to air what they had to say and it was a false portrayal of telling the lie that Afrikans were not solving their own problems etc.We Afrikans reject Europeans and other non-Afrikans who pretend to be doing good for Afrikans whom they falsely portray to be children incapable of doing things for ourselves whilst they hustle and become rich at our expense.Kony and his gang are on the run for years because we Afrikans are hunting them down.Obama has sent American troops to Uganda not to hunt the LRA but to steal the gas and oil that has been discovered in Uganda. We do not want any American military or non-Afrikan military in our Afrikan Motherland and you negro Obama supporters we will not allow your ‘black’ president to re-colonise Afrika and Afrikans on behalf of your American racist imperialist masters and mistresses whom you serve devotedly as their dogs of war.Keep out of Afrika. You are not welcome. You are our enemies.Afrika for the Afrikans. For those at home and abroad as Marcus Garvey the greatest Pan Afrikanist leader ever said.

  3. They have found oil over there thats all this is about now they got to make a boogie man!

  4. Why would you worry about the right wing? Why aren’t you concerned about whether or not the children are saved? Also, I know far too many African-Americans who are racist against Africans (It doesn’t matter which country in Africa).

I know the Ugandans have been taking action to put a stop to the atrocities in their country. Just because a white man says something doesn’t mean they were waiting for a saviour. I talked to white students who said they heard nothing about this until I presented it in class. Some students told me they saw the link but thought it was another political announcement.

I like the fact that more people was getting involved. Let’s not get picky about who the people are and if they are perfect. If the group told the Ugandan government to kill its gay citizens, let’s not forget that Americans have done the same. People have to learn to be to tolerant.

  5. Wolves in sheep’s clothing. Remember colonialists came as missionaries and so called “do gooders” & peace keepers. Now these civilizations are all EXTINCT.These White European joowish people need to get out of Africa and leave our people alone. They fund rebels and create divisions amongst different tribes who are otherwise peaceful and stir wars among them. Then come in on the other end wearing missionary robes and acting like saints while they fold their bloody hands behind them “Offering help and assistance”. Leave us the fuck alone you European murderers. Hypocrites , instead of going after the imperialists who started the problem in the first place as a mean to harvest Africa’s resources , they continue with their programs of propaganda and lies.

  6. This article made me laugh out loud. You’ve obviously never met people who work at IC. Some are Christian, some are atheist, some are straight, some are gay, some are none of the above. This is so ludicrous I honestly have no words.

    • When your house is on fire, you don’t care what the political party is of the person with the fire hose. Let’s get rid of Kony and not get bogged down with agendas. If progressives are standing by when the fire is finally extinguished, they can then make the case for how, when, and where to rebuild and also to remove the right wingers.

  7. You said “On issues relating to African affairs, it benefits African Americans to listen to actual Ugandans, Nigerians, Liberians and other black people who actually live on the continent before offering ourselves up ourselves as pawns to imperialist players.”

Will you listen to those in the Congo?

“We don’t need plastic buckets and cloth handouts. We had a good life before. Get rid of the LRA.”

  8. Is this civil war over in uganda? This is trash sensationalism. Precisely why we need our own world wide “News” outlet
